Note: I dropped the wrong picture for the BenRiach Smoky 10. Oops!

Great review Erik. Very informative. Seems like we tend to overlook the lower ABV offerings. We are probably missing out on some good ones.

Woo hoo!! I totally lucked out this past weekend. Total Wines by me have given up on Benriach. The 16 year was reduced from $119 to $76 so I gambled on it and picked it up. I hope to get the same tasting notes. Also I appreciate the details and knowledge shared here. Very helpful.

Great review. Sounds like an interesting one, but when you mentioned the things about the big difference in price tags, I began to wonder if it really is that interesting 🤔. Here in Sweden it's sek1199 ($117) ....and I think that's quite to much for a "non craft whisky". This one will be on the "try before buy" list. As you said, for that kind of money, there are better options, as an example, I can get one bottle of Deanston 12yo, and one bottle of Craigellachie 13yo....for the same amount as one bottle of Benriach 16yo. So, quite an easy choice, atleast to me🍷cheers

The problem with E150 is it uses acids and other chemicals in its production. So yes the base might be natural grain but its the additives used in production that could be cancer causing (according to California Proposition 65)
@ErikWaitWhiskyStudiesАй бұрын
Other than a video by Ralfy, do you have any resources that substantiate this? I’d appreciate it. Thanks.

Hello Erik, thanks for another informative review. One thing about non-chill filtration and whiskies under 46% abv: I believe a producer can release such, it's just that if they do so then they can't be certain that their whisky won't develop any "cloudiness" with e.g. lower temperatures. Roy @Aqvavite has mentioned a recent Thompson Bros. whisky release that was below 46%--not sure, possibly ~44.5%?--but also labelled as being non-chill filtered. That suggests there's really no "requirement" per se for chill filtration, even below 46%--i.e. merely a "cosmetic" or risk-avoidance behaviour--it's just that the customers might notice some cloudiness/Scotch "mist". And as others have pointed out: if (some) people can learn to drink and appreciate e.g. cloudy ales, then surely they can also learn to drink/relish cloudy whiskies.

Yep, that’s what I’ve heard.

I can't remember exactly when I saw it, but I read that the TTB in the US was no longer allowing the phrase "natural color" on imported whiskies as it was not a specific enough term to indicate if coloring had or had not been added. Sadly, I haven't come across any newer releases of anything that's not colored to see what the changes may be.

I’m with you being more selective. At this point (with my backlog of bottles) I will only purchase a bottle if it is potentially life changing (not literally)

Have you tried bushmills prohibition era whiskey? I'd like to see you're review on it.
@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies2 ай бұрын
Nope, I’ve not tried it. I did 2 series on Irish Whiskey. I may visit Ireland in 2025 but until then I have no plans on doing Irish Whiskey.

@@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies I'll look forward to it. Devils brigade is another gem you've likely not been privy to. It's an American Canadian blend made in tribute to the military collaboration between the two countries during WW2. Interesting hooch with an absolutely noble back story. Let me know if you can't find one, I'll turn ya loose one of mine. Thanks. Keep up the good work.
