This doesn’t look as nicely painted as the original. Is it missing the premium paint finish the original had?

They've gone with a matte finish to the paint over gloss. Personally, I prefer it.

Even at the reduced price, it still seems overpriced. There are really well articulated and well painted KO and 3P TFs that are still cheaper than this. Some of them are even triple changers.

I love super articulated, high end non-transforming representations of Transformers as much as I do the official and third party transforming gear. They occupy a wildly different space in terms of my appreciation of what can be achieved with posing, photography and display. So to answer your question, the point is to sell this sort of figure to like minded people who don't see transforming as the be all and end all.
