Winter is definitely here, with overnight lows dropping into the negatives. And as soon as the troopy is back on the road, we'll be camping our way through it. Luckily while I was in Anchorage, I was able to go to REI and Bass Pro Shops to gear up for winter. Here's the kit I'm using to survive in these conditions.
Thanks for being here.

You'd probably want to plug in for a few hours to make use of a block heater... At about 400 watts, I'd say not recommended without shore power. If you think you'll have outdoor plugins available then it's probably worth it, but otherwise a good 5w full synth oil and you should be okay. All the best from Alberta! (Rockin' a 70 series diesel all winter long. 😂)

Thanks so much man! I threw on a little 100w oil pan heater that I can plug into the inverter for a few hours in the morning worst case. But with the full synthetic I haven’t been having problems 🤙

I hope once you get the truck gong you will head south. You can always go back up and complete your trip some time in the future . As they say ,live to fight another day. Stay warm and safe .

Ben, as a Minnesota guy I would definitely recommend a block heater. I've used them most of my life...but if you're traveling you'll need to plug it in somehow. That's the rub. Hopefully you can get out of Dodge before the temps drop. Stay warm! - Dan.

Thanks so much Dan! I haven’t actually looked into how power hungry they are yet, but there’s a possibility I could run one for a short while off my inverter on my house batteries.

Ok so how about your best friend. What are you doing to keep the dog warm and SAFE?

All the same gear applies to him! He sleeps up in the camper with me, and is content to curl up under the blankets when it’s cold at night. He’s also got a cold weather jacket and boots from Ruffwear! Thanks for the comment 🙏

Nice to hear from you again ben .I'm glad to see you're finding ways to stay warm, nothing worse than freezing your nuts off, and can't get warm. I've been there and done that a few times. I think since you've got the heated blanket and a good warm sleeping bag, maybe you don't need the heater. Put the money on something else later on. Just a thought. Take care and be safe out there.

Thanks John! Good to see you here! I think you’re right, I should be able to survive without it, and keeping the money in the emergency fund is a good bet 🙌

Man! Me being from the south, I think I would have a full blown electric fireplace in my build! 😅. But at least with all this new gear, you will be setup for any environment! Looking forward to further adventures!

Looks like a great way to spend some time (coming from a northern boy) but sadly Tok is not the most exciting place to be stuck! Did you get hit with the snow storm that rolled in earlier this week?

Yeah it’s definitely not a bad way to spend some time! I’ve probably eaten everything on the menu at fast eddy’s at this point lol. We got a little bit of snow with some more in the forecast for this week!
