In the four years I've owned my Tesla EV I have charged over 50% for free at a minimum. Last year my charging at home was roughly $30.00 and on a road trip for a solar eclipse about $100.00. $130.00 to travel just under 9,000 miles ain't so bad. Now I have solar on my roof with a metering plan that will return $hundreds at the end of the year with no electric bill. Add in a longer road trip and my out of pocket will be just under $150.00 for the year. Yes I had to pay for the solar but the net metering will return that to me in several years. With no home electric bill, no home gas bill and very minimal vehicle refueling I am and will be well ahead financially. No maintenance costs save $130.00 last month for a twelve volt battery (after 4 years) installed out the door at my house. Ya gotta be crazy to stick with gas. Minor tweak here - Supercharging, which I only do on roadtrips - is pretty close to filling up at a gas station. The reason why is that you don't get the stated range when doing highway miles. For example, on my Tesla Model Y LR - I get about 220 miles of Interstate driving (75mph) in normal conditions (70F, light/no wind) using my 72kWh battery. Most of the Superchargers in my area charge $0.37/kWh or $26.64 or $0.12/mile. If we assume the 28mpg SUV gas equiv gets about 25 mpg at 75mph - that works out to $3 per gallon (which is about what is costs in my area right now). So, it's about a wash. I also excluded charging losses since they are less than 1% for DC to DC charging. I live in Colorado - so 75mph is the speed limit for much of our Interstates not in the mountains. In reality, I typically drive slightly faster (5 to 9 over depending on traffic and conditions). Also, wind and cold also impact the efficiency too (also true for gas cars). However, 90% of my charging is done at home and I do fully charge before a long roadtrip - so I do get that initial 220 miles at the home charging rate. My Telsa app says that I have saved about $1500 vs a typical 28mpg gas SUV with my mix of driving and charging. I do about 15k miles per year.

Also no other brand that I know of adjusts their vehicle prices like Tesla does. It seems when talking about Tesla depreciation, very few seem to account for the fact that Tesla will sell a car for $70,000 and then the next day or week sell that exact same car for $55,000 which immediately depreciates that $70,000 quicker than normal.
@nguyep4Ай бұрын
@@anthonyscott5134Your example is cherry picking. Tesla priced high during the production ramping phase and demand was higher than supply. They were at 900k per year production runrate compared to today at 2M. The scarcity at that time couple with lowest interest rate make that Tesla was able to priced $5k+ above the normal price. And Tesla relentlessly driving cost of production down, apply that cost saving to the consumers when appropriate... similar reason why used cars were above the asking price during covid as there were chips shortage for news cars. Used cars on high demand and low inventory. Tesla doesn't have dealership network, they see the market price in real time and able to make adjustments in real time. A LOT of people started buying them then turning around and selling them for a $10K premium (Like Carvana). In response, Tesla started increasing the price every week by $2-3K to STOP people from buying while they caught up to the waiting list. Prices got all the way up to $75-80K before supply finally caught up with demand. They basically DOUBLED their production in 1 year! At this point they reset their prices to what they ORIGINALLY were. With that lesson learned, they started they Cybertruck at around $130K. We have zillions of EVs of all types in the SF Bay area. You referred to the “FUD” factor ( fear, uncertainty and doubt) which the AI voiceover “itself” used to discourage newcomers to the world of EVs from purchasing one. Good job. I look forward to listening to more of your videos.

Been driving electric for 3 years (Kia Niro EV, Chevy Bolt EUV, and now Chevy Equinox EV) and I have no regrets. I have also not experienced any software issues in my cars. The only problem I have experienced is the issue with Kia/Hyundai EVs not charging the 12v battery. Also, when talking about battery replacement costs exceeding the value of the used EV this is also true of ICE cars. I had a 2004 Ford Explorer I bought used and shortly after I bought it the transmission went out and it cost $2k to replace it which I did. about 6 months later the engine bricked and I was quoted around $3800 - $4000 for a rebuilt engine which exceeded the value of the car at that time. Almost every issue they bring up about EVs hold true for ICE vehicles as well.

I've saw a review where the Chevy Blazer display just froze and the reviewer called it the worst vehicle he ever drove. I saw a review where the reviewer said the Rivian R1T completely bricked on him, and that was experienced by other owners. Of course, I've had ~15 recalls on my ICE Mercedes, about 4 of them software related, and they don't do over the air updates, so everytime it was a trip to the dealer. My Cybertruck has been flawless so far, and we're now enjoying Full Self Driving. Like other commenters below, I'm never going back to gas, but I will never buy a GM, or Ford EV, and now, It would be really tough for me to buy anything but a Tesla. The price or form factor would have to be really great --- perhaps a BYD SUV when they become available in the US.

Regarding maintenance costs, the electricity to power my ev is less than I used to pay for my Toyota Corolla and the Corolla also required regular oil changes, radiator flushes, tuning, rebuilds when the motor got old, brake replacement (I have read about ev's which have gone as far as >400,000 miles without brake maintenance for owners who use the engine to slow the vehicle), catalytic converter, muffler, and on and on and, most of all, the incessant and expensive things required for a gas-car to keep it on the road after it is about 3 years old-at least that was my experience. My ev is now in its 6th year and there's been no maintenance other than rotating the tires and replacing them (once). It is also very likely that medical researchers are going to find in a few years that people who never fill a vehicle with gas and breathe gas fumes tend to live longer than cbe drivers while being less likely to die of cancer and respiratory diseases. Anyway, probably tl;dr! But here is a negative: I just got back from a road trip and was really not happy that a Tesla Supercharger billed me $14+ for a fill-up which they normally charge less than $7 at the same location. To put that in perspective, to put the same amount of power in my tank when I got back home was $3.47 for that ~150 mile trip. Anyway, more tl;dr. Many ev drivers like me nitpick over paying an extra dollar here and another dollar there but then find from talking with others that the reason they are late to the office is that they had an emergency something or other with their gasmobile which needed immediate attention and just had to fork out another $110 as well as miss our morning meeting, enough to make a LOT of 150 mile trips in my ev! Maybe we shouldn't complain so much? I do not agree that we should depend on our ev's just for short trips. I have driven half way across the continent on a trip which was much more pleasant than using my old Toyota Corolla. But I got the ev model with 300+ mile range. I use my ev for all trips, short and long, with no problems. My long range Model 3 has replaced my gas car completely, not just for short trips. I am not an ev enthusiast. I am a realist. My ev experience has blown the brake pads off of any gasmobile I have ever owned.

You are supposed to replace you brake fluid every 3 years or so due to moisture absorption. I would suggest an oil change every 100,000 miles as well (in the gear reduction). My Leaf is almost due for it's 15 year or 200,000km (whichever comes first) coolant change. Previous owner declined to replace the cabin air filter when replacing that battery in 2021. Regarding charging to 100% I see two issues: 1. the majority of EV's are showing the time till 100% charged, so a lot of consumer think, that this is what they have to do. 2. rental cars has to be returned with at least 90% charged, so the client has to charge it over 90% if the charger is not exactly at the airport.
@GeeDeeBirdАй бұрын
Wow! There are some really desperate EV haters out there! So Ben, here's MY EV rant. Maybe you can put your impeccable research skills to the task of fact checking me. Gas up time versus fast charge time is a completely false comparison of the relative operating costs. It rarely takes less than 10 minutes to gas up, but you have to do it at least once a week. That's more than 500 minutes a year assuming there's never a line at the pumps, which is a very generous assumption. Most people with EVs have home chargers they use once or twice a week. It takes less time to plug and unplug an EV than it does to warm up a gas car in cold weather - maybe 10 or 15 seconds (30 minutes a year). Few car owners take more than a half dozen trips greater than 200 miles a year (well within the 80 percent range of nearly every EV). If they have to charge from 10 to 80 percent twice per trip at the high time of 40 minutes, that's 480 minutes - and that's a very high estimate. As a side note: The EPA would be doing everyone a big favor if, instead of city, highway mileage estimates, it gave 100-10 percent, and 80-10 percent range estimates for EVs. That's much more useful information for a prospective EV buyer. Now, add on the time (and money) spent on oil changes, coolant flushes, air filters, fuel filters belts, hoses and all the other "routine maintenance" required only for internal commission engines and transmissions. Finally, lest we forget, the average EV owner spends between $3000 and $4000 less per year for charging versus buying gas. How much of your time is that worth? Add it all up and tell me, which type of vehicle requires more of your time and treasure to keep rolling? Honestly, it's not even close. Are there obstacles? Yes! We need better charging solutions for apartment dwellers and urban areas. We need to keep extending the range, reducing the charge time, expanding the infrastructure, developing less expensive, more environmentally friendly batteries and motors. And the manufacturers have to keep closing the price gap. But, even if no further advances were possible, the EVs, batteries and charging we have right now are more efficient and environmentally friendly than ICEVs. The ONLY people who honestly think EVs require more time or money to own and operate are people who have never owned an EV. You can deny it all you want, but the truth is inescapable. The future of personal transportation is electric.
