The benchdogs square also has tapped holes into which you can screw long dogs, for when you need to cut a post-formed kitchen worktop and can’t reference off the top edge. These are also spaced so that you can drop the dogs through the holes in a MFT table to make a cutting station...there are specific dogs with a tapered end to make set up easy. I have the mk I square, which uses Allen head screws to secure it to the rail, a little less convenient but dead on accurate. I highly recommend it.

I chose a track saw square from Banggood website because it is half as wide. I would have purchased the TSO product but it is ~6" wide and when attached to the end of a 1400mm track, the track does not extend past the edge of a 4' panel by more than an inch or so. The Banggood product is ~3" wide so the 1400 track extends ~4" past the end of a 4' panel. It works well on my Makita or Festool tracks and is about $30. I wish the standard track length was 1500mm, and if it was I would have gone with the TSO square.

FC tools of UK (Scotland) does too. Their original square was an absolute work of art, and nicer than the Benchdogs, but both companies made 'improvements' to their squares now I think the new Benchdog is nicer, but I have not tested it's accuracy yet. The FC uses cams with a Allen key to tighten, the throw lever cam on Benchdog is more elegant.

I've got the Benchdogs UK square and it is really excellent! It does come in models that are compatible with Bosch/Mafell, but you do need to buy two versions to maintain compatibility with Festool/Makita/Triton as well. As I write, the TSO GR16 is currently available in the UK at £99 sterling. A real bargain IMHO, given that I previously owned the Triton - aka, the kinda square railsquare - which came in at around £35 about 4 years ago. I was in the market for the 'Clyde built' FC square, made right here in Bonnie Scotland, but it was always out of stock, and I just gave up on it, opting instead for the Benchdogs version. I'm not experiencing any retail regret.

Unfortunately, no check about the reality of the squaring of them has been made: and it's the key of the quality of the cut! In fact, as I have the TSO, I can mention it's usable only for small lengths pieces: over 0,8 meter length you'll see the squaring fail Maybe except the Woodpecker model, all the other have no way to calibrate the squaring: so you can't adjust anything. When you buy one, the squaring should be good, but if it's not, there is nothing you can do to fix that.

It looks like the InstaRail also doesn't have the notches for using a rail clamp like the GRS or Bench Dog. I recently purchased the TSO and I love it. Plus you have all the accessories to make a whole system like the angle accessory for rounded edges, and of course the fantastic parallel guides w/ flip stops.

A few points, the TSO is now rebadged and called Festool Rail Square in Europe. I had both the TSO and the Benchdogs squares. I found I was always reaching for the Benchdogs mark 1 version, it felt better and produced more accurate cuts for me. Also over here in the UK the Benchdogs is way cheaper then the TSO. The additional pieces for the Benchdogs make it really useful and it will soon have a parallel guide to go with it which again will be way cheaper than the TSO over here. The developer Ralph is just such an enthusiast that he is constantly improving his products.

My only additional question would be accuracy...perhaps a 5 cut method test for each to show their degree of accuracy. I have had the Woodpeckers one for quite some time, but, to be honest, I really wish I was aware of the TSO when I purchased it. My biggest gripe with the Woodpeckers square is that on more than one occasion, I have found the "pointer" that indexes the angle isn't completely seated in the notch (not out of the notch, but not completely tight, even with the locking knob tightened) and the result is slightly out of square. I also think the weight makes it awkward and moving it around lends itself to bumping the index pointer slightly out of square. And the reality is that, besides when I first got it and was trying it out on scrap, I've never made anything but a 90 degree cut with it.

I have the TSO square, and guides, and wouldn't want to use my track saw without them. With the Woodpeckers variety, there is a way for you to be able to use it on both ends of your work piece, but it does require some minor modification. Unscrew the tab that balances the square on your work piece, and move it to the opposite side of the square. Next, mark, drill and tap new mounting holes, and you have just added new possibilities. Will this void your warranty??? I don't know, I've never owned Woodpeckers square, so I cannot answer that.

Here is coming Bosch with an interesting squaring solution: Bosch FSN WAN. It is light, can be angled (not big precision, but good) and can be used without additional track for cross-cuts!

I don't understand the weight concern. The tipping is not an issue because of the hook so the weight I would see as a benefit.

@@midjetville I actually have this square and a 3 m track by Makita and the 55 inch tracks and a 37-in track. To me I guess the 2 lbs more just doesn't mean anything. Now if I were using the square on the opposite end all the time and you had to hold the track out over the stock and lower it down then that way I guess would make sense. I've never found that I needed to do this at least not in the fashion where I'm standing on the cut side and having to extend the square on the opposite end of the track over the work.

I think you missed details in regard to the MFT dog’s compatibility. If you have an MFT( probably a high number if into the whole festool track range) the added benefit of Dogs compatibility with the Benchdog uk track square should easily put it into the lead.

UPDATE: Both are now $145, but neither can be sold to a US customer. The TSO is actually quite a bit cheaper at Axminster, $140 US, and Festool sells a rebranded version for $130. Festool does not sell their version in the US , but does appear to sell it everywhere else. There is a build series on KZbin done by trainer Brent where he is breaking down plywood and when needs to do some 90degree cuts he uses a woodpeckers 1281 square instead of a rail square. Woodpeckers seems to be the only 3rd party brand allowed in Festool US marketing. I’m surprised he didn’t at least use a TSO since they are essentially a sub-contractor.

I've set aside some funds to buy myself a Makita tracksaw setup for my birthday this year. I know a TSO track square would be super efficient, but I'm curious on your thoughts of how much more efficient than just using a Woodpeckers 1812 or 2616. Being a hobbiest, my time/cost/benefit calculation is slightly different and having something that is multifunctional, like a large accurate try square, is appealing. Of course, I completely understand the value of tools that increase accuracy and decrease frustration.
@bentswoodworking
@bentswoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
There are many ways to do things. Don’t feel pressured to buy something if something else is working well for you. To me, this is easier because it connects to the track so I don’t have to use two different tools separately. Do you “need” it, no. Is it nice to have, yes.

I have the instasquare and it sucked. It makes dents in the rail everytime you lock it down. I fit a cut off finger from a nitrile glove to cover it and fixed the problem. However it wasn't accurate 90. Bought the FC hybrid square from UK. It was pricy, but it is the ONLY square which works with BOTH the mafell and festool rail. It is very accurate. If I needed another one I would buy the new Benchdogs square because works 2 direction and the no tip tab is nicer. Don't know it's accuracy.

One thing I would have liked to see was a test of how square each was. My InstaRail is definitely not square (probably off by 1/16th over 24") and looking at the tool nut site I'm not alone. Not sure if there was just a bad batch, but it's tough spending that money and discovering the issue after the return period.

Your viewers should be aware of purchasing TSO products in the right order. After viewing numerous reviews on the square and following you I purchased it. Enjoyed it and upgraded with the 20” kit. Found that I would use the 30” and tried to purchase it. YOU CANT DO THAT! You must purchase the entire kit again to get 30”. So nice tools but!

Hey Jason, how thick is the TSO on the part that rests under the track? I got some fastcap track hangers (the green and black ones you have covered for walls and garage doors?), I am wondering whether I can keep the TSO GRS 16 PE V2 attached to my 55 inch track while mounted to the wall (I mounted the hangers green latch down, so the tracks do not rest on the splinter guard). I am hoping there will be enough clearance in the gap behind the track to keep it assembled while on the wall! Edit: Also, the woodpeckers is surprisingly inexpensive for their usual pricing scheme + its extra features in that big mitre plate. I went with the TSO though, I like their system - got the MTR-X for my MFT3 (only have one for now), the replacement hinge brackets they sell with the metal slop stop, the guide rail square is on the way & I got the Bigfoot on the way with that as well. I also ordered their ultimate dogs kit to get started with chamfer dogs + the chamfer bit/reamer you suggested to have at hand. I will be getting their parallel guides next.

I noticed that the Benchdogs UK pushes with two cams instead pulling with a clamp. This turns the much shorter than full width T-slot rail into the reference surface. Will this compromise its accuracy? As several have stated, the Benchdogs UK still seems to have excellent 90 deg. accuracy so maybe this is not an issue.
