I'm expecting big things from you if this track is anything to go by. Really impressive, well-produced and definitely xenharmonic. On first listen my expectations were subverted a few times, which is a good thing. I listened to it a bunch more times since then. Looking forward to hearing more! Thanks for the shout out too.

Now that's some great microtonal shit. I like how, unlike many tracks out there, this melody isn't all over the weird jarring places, like a Powerpoint presentation for all the sounds you can't play in 12-EDO. It's actually harmonious and pleasing to the ear while still showing unique sound. This approach is what's really needed to draw more people into appreciating and composing in different tunings.

Completely agree! Microtonal music should branch out into more «subgenres»; I would probably pay to hear industry standard use and implementation of microtonality!

I'm so happy to discover Microtonal and Polychromatic music. Along with music and instruments centered around the Turkish region. This song is fantastic!
@benyamind6 жыл бұрын
Same! All these different colors to experience. I'm half Turkish so I grew up exposed to the Turkish sound, only later to realize that from western perspective they use micro-tones. I'm experimenting quite a bit with microtonal stuff. Trying to stay in an harmonic core though, it cán get pretty freaky and weird quickly. Glad you enjoyed this! It's interesting to see how people respond to it.. because as the creator you gradually adapt to the colors and differences from standard tuning, but a first-time listener didn't have that whole process. Going to drop a new microtonal piece soon, stay tuned! Cheers.

This has such a great texture! I feel I can learn a lot from your music as a composer, so thank you. I love the polyrhythm with 3 groups of 5 on the piano against 3-3-4 on the drums, Mesmerising
@benyamind6 жыл бұрын
Cheers man! Yeah the polyrhythms are interesting. It's like the piano spirals through the drums (if you were to visualize a 2d or 3d spiral). Atleast that's how my head flows with it haha. The drums do 3-3-4 indeed, the piano does 3 groups of 5 (triplets by itself) and then the bongos do a 5/4 rhythm through the thing. Really weird as a whole, but hey it works!

Very cool piece! Can I know what scale you are using for this? The description says you are using some sort of harmonic minor equivalent but could you be more specific? I love seeing people experiment with all kinds of new scales in unfamiliar tunings. Keep up the good work!
@benyamind4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I've opened up the project but it's been a while since I dove into the structures of this tune so I'm not quite sure what views I had on it. I seem to use a lot of the intervals in 22-edo and shift around a bit between modes.. I think. At that time it felt related to harmonic minor.

When making music like this do you just use a note on 12-EDO as the base and pitch it up or down or is there a more sophisticated way of making micro-tonal music? Sounds interesting for sure and honestly pretty damn good too.
@benyamind5 жыл бұрын
Certain synths are micro-tuning friendly, and you can pick - for example - an equal temperament like 22-EDO. This maps out your midi-keyboard to 22 notes per octave and voila, you can make weird music. : ) Glad you like it!

Hi! There's a game called Project Arrythmia, a musical bullet hell. Players can upload custom levels, but we need permission from artists to use their songs. I'm wondering if we could use your songs in levels. The game IS payed for, but custom levels don't make any revenue.

How do you know what chords to use? I can make 12 TET music easy because the chords are always in tune. I don’t know if the chords I pick in 22 are in tune.
@benyamind3 жыл бұрын
When I made this song I was pretty new to microtonal music and tunings like 22-EDO. I remember just noodling around and being entranced by these otherworldly proportions to the sounds. When I make music in different tunings like 17/22/31 and more, I also like to know what cents/ratios I am working with. I like to reference everything back to 12, so I often still think of intervals as simply warped versions of the common intervals. I also strongly value the fifth. To me the fifth gives grip to all these alien tonalities. I'll always be looking for fifths in melody/harmony. That's why I tend to avoid tunings that don't represent the fifth well. With all this said, I still mostly go by ear. The more you make music - regardless of tuning - the more your ear gets fine-tuned in terms of harmony sensation. Hope this answers your question!
@phlubblebubble2 жыл бұрын
Hey man what all synths did you use for this? I write microtonal stuff all the time but I can never get it to sound this *rich*, and I suspect a lot of it is just what I'm using.

@@benyamind I suspected it was Kontakt, just based on sounds I've heard other people get out of it! I've been wanting to check that one out (beyond just the player version), but the price point of the full one has always made me hesitate a bit! I'll have to look into it. I'm usually happy with Surge and Dexed and ZynAddSubFx but there truly is an audible difference when you start messing with the professional plugins. Thanks for the quick reply and I'll check out your video.
