Benzodiazepine Dependence and Withdrawal - How To Avoid This

Benzodiazepine or benzos for short, is the class of drug that works at the GABA receptors in your brain to produce a relaxing or sedative effect. We use benzodiazepines to treat short-term anxiety and sleep. Some doctors will use them as a muscle relaxer - Valium is pretty typical for this. They can also be used to stop a seizure. You may get valium or Ativan prior to a procedure like a colonoscopy.
The common benzodiazepines or benzos for short that we use for anxiety are Ativan, Klonopin, Xanax and Valium.
Benzodiazepines are habit forming and it’s easy to become addicted to them. Here’s why. Benzos cause a tolerance effect. This means if you take them regularly like daily or several times a week, overtime the effect can wear off and you;ll need to take more to get the same effect. So now instead of a half pill or one pill working, you notice you need two pills.
This is a medication tolerance effect. It can happen to anyone and is not the same as addiction. If this happens to you, it doesn’t mean you’ve been misusing the medication or have an addition. Addiction involves developing a psychological dependence on it where you need to take it.
Daily, long term use is associated with cognitive changes like not being as mentally sharp. It can create balance problems in some people where you just aren’t quite solid on your feet. This can be a big problem with elderly people by increasing their risk of falls.

I was dependent on benzos for 30 years. 10mg of diazepam daily. Then went through a natural disaster-and ran out of meds for 5 days. I realised I’d die without them. Began tapering right away and was off them in 10 months. I don’t have any lingering effects or withdrawals and now I’m looking into becoming a benzo withdrawal coach 🎉

I’m currently tapering from being on Xanax for 5 years. I was taking 2mg 3 times a day now I’m at 1.5 once a day and 2mg twice a day. But I have severe anxiety and my doctor also prescribed me buspirone. So now she wants me to take both and I’m honestly scared and just wanna get over the Xanax dependency

Reading through the comments, I forgot to mention to take into account how quickly this can be taken from you. It happens all the time, people switch doctors, insurance, or a doctor just changes their mind. You'll find yourself taking benzos every day for a decade when your doctor retires and every new doctor you see tells you that your previous doctor was reckless, they don't believe in prescribing benzos, and that they won't help you. Your brain will have 10 years of this substance controlling the wiring then all of a sudden you're cut off and thrown into life-threatening benzo withdrawal. It sounds heartless and irresponsible, and it is, because many doctors are heartless and irresponsible. But it's reality.

@trafficjon400 @Jim I live in Canada - Toronto, Ontario - and I can say from personal experience that the homeless here are not treated with dignity by local, provincial or federal governments. Mental health services are sorely lacking, especially for those who live in poverty, barely getting by or who can't afford to pay out of pocket for therapy. Wait times are ridiculous to get the proper help needed. Our healthcare system (both physical and mental), like that in other Western countries, is outdated and needs a massive overhaul. I'm currently experiencing exactly what @Jim described and wow, just... WOW. Never thought I'd see the day when I'd have to fight so hard just to get the help I desperately need and be repeatedly denied care. 😔

I was prescribed Valium in my teens and was addicted to them until I was in my mid fifties. You really don’t want the withdrawals I went through and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. Please note that I was finally told to take smaller doses, combined with small amounts of marijuana and I came off them, but it’s all just a horrible memory now. Thank you very much, Doctor!!!

I wish I had talked to to you 14 months ago. I had been on 4 mg of Klonopin for 13 years and my Dr. was suggesting 5. I tried to go to 3 and the Dr. retired ! Her replacement told me no pills, you don't have anxiety. She later wrote a script for a 17 day wean off starting with .5 mg twice daily . For the next 48 days I was at the gates of Hell both physically and mentally. Until 6 weeks ago I went through hills and horrible valleys. I am now stabilizing, Thank God. I am 67 years old and looks like I will be able to "live out my days" being reasonably happy. My Klonopin was prescribed by three different doctors over the 13 years and never given a down side by any of them ! Thanks so much for your efforts to educate. God Bless You !

I've learned my lesson with benzos. I still take them on occasion, but you HAVE to space the doses apart. It's black and white, no matter how much you like the guarantee of a few hours of sleep, what she said was right. If you take them for a long time, it hurts your brain chemicals. I have no idea what your talking about lol, What you are referring to is called dosing "As needed" which is actually far worse then regular usage because you now have a higher chance of developing a neurological conditions called Benzo kindling. Regardless of how far you space your dosages, you are placing stress on the Nervous system using GabaA receptors to which you will experience tolerance, then tolerance withdrawal and finally paradoxical, adverse reactions. There's no proper way to use these medications because they were meant for short term usage only which short term for benzos is no more then 2-4 weeks max. You are going to hurt yourself using these medications

@@AzrielGrace I haven't taken any in almost 7 months, but when I was using them on occasion, I would take 1 mg every few days. I've had 3 bad bouts with Klonopin and each time the wd got worse and worse so I learned my lesson the hard way. There's just no way in hell I would ever take benzos every day. I'm not even sure I will ever even take anymore at all. I'm 8 months sober and don't like stuff in my body. Please be careful with that stuff. Good luck.

ABSOLUTELTY SPON ON.... Not sure what GCT1990 comments are about... I am prescribed these for only really bad anxiety attacks... I take an SSRI for daily use... My doc always tells me to use these only when absolutely needed and I should not consume more than 2-3 tablets a week. I am only prescribed 5mg... I must say I notice now 5mg doesn't really do much anymore which is a little scary cos what this doc is talking about is kind of what she is referring too... Always having to up the dose... I would say use these only when you ABSOLUTELY need too... Maybe try herbal stuff first like a chamomile tea etc... Don't get me wrong take it if u need too in the moment, but if u feel u need it daily look for something else

Valium is in the same benzodiazepine family as ativan. Valium is more of a muscle relaxantant. Betty Ford used to take valium and alcohol and ended up a mess. That's the reason for the betty Ford addiction clinic were such notable people like Elizabeth Taylor went. Anyway, be careful with any alcohol while taking valium (or any drug). Basically you went from one benzo to another. Just hope it helps. That's the important thing!

Wow! What a great explanation! I love how you unpack the details, with examples! I'm 64 and have been on benzos off and on since my 20s, for anxiety and panic disorder. I also have had major depressive disorder and the 1st symptom I get with a relapse is anxiety, before I become aware of depression, so you are so right, in my experience, about antidepressants reducing anxiety! In the past, before I understood about benzo withdrawal, also experienced some twitching and legs jerking at night! Off benzos now, trying to adopt habit of mindfulness meditation. I haven't listened to your download on that yet, but watched your channel on it, looking forward to hearing your download. I have a "confession" and that is, my only addiction is watching Dr. Tracey Marks video's, lol. All jokes aside, I find them very, informative, enlightening and intelligently humorously serious, if there is such a thing. It depends on the person i guess..my grandfather took ativan at night for stress, he took it for over 55 years(he died at 98) he had no dementia or anything and was as sharp as ever until about a year before he died. He obviously couldnt stop it after all those years but it had helped him for all that time. I dont recommend anyone to do that but just writing this cause we need new benzo like pills with less or no tolerance and easier withdrawal, that would eliminate all anxiety issues for millions of people, mostly the ones who have anxiety so severe they cant function, no matter how much therapy is done.

I've been on 4 mg of clonazepam daily for about 7 years now! My doctor desperately wants to taper me off, but frequent bipolar episodes have made this impossible as yet. I feel no benefit from them now, but really notice if I miss a dose! Cognitive impairment is frustrating as hell. I used to read a lot when I was younger, but struggle to even follow audio books now... Generally feel a lot dumber. I'm definitely not looking forward to the inevitable withdrawal symptoms from clonazepam, had heard it can be pretty hellish. @Brave Star. Why 4 mgs/ day. They have a 13 hr half life. I've been on it for yrs for PTSD anxiety, first it was Xanax 8 mg/day. I hated it. I went to my pysc and had him take me off after I weaned myself down to 6 mg/day. After 10 yrs of use. I was so afraid I would go into siezures switching, nope. It was great! I felt better and could read and concentrate. I'm on 1mg Klonopin tid. I also have spastic muscles in my neck and shoulders due to nerve damage, it helps somewhat. I think your Dr's over dosing you in my opinion. Does he not realize 3 should be fine and it has a half life of 13 hrs?? Is this your PCP or a pysc Dr? PCP Drs don't know much about drugs like this other than ' it's bad for you'. That's what I've gotten. Let them have the PTSD anxiety attack right!!! I hope you get down slowly. I can get by with 2 a day. But at the 12 hr mark i start going into slight DT feelings. And i know it can go bad quick. My step son went thru DTS after abruptly stopping his meds. It wasn't pretty. Good luck, hey if you try to go down by .25 mg a day. That's how i did Xanax and in 6 months i went down 2 mgs a day. Then i got on Klonopin and it's much better. And you know, it doesn't help with my sleep, you??

Brave Starr. You CAN do it. It took me NINE years of my doc saying it wasn't addictive, to just "quit". It IS addictive and it does cause lots of problems. It was "hellish", on it and off it. But it wasn't helping, it was making EVERYTHING worse. Be gentle with yourself and listen to your own cues. Go slow, reduce the dose and the frequency. Let yourself de-tox at your own time. You CAN do it. Really.

I just watched your video on benzos and I have been on those for 33 years now, yes 33 years, I know that's a very long time and I would love more than anything to get off of those. You actually described my life to the letter. It's getting much harder to get my PCP to prescribe due to my doctor's limitations and it's very hard to get a doctor to prescribe them now. I don't take them 3 times a day however I take typically one, no more than two a day. I only take two if things get really bad. I actually had a psychiatrist once tell me that if it wasn't broke, don't fix... well I am broken. This medicine ( Klonopin ) has pretty much had control of most of my life and I know all of the withdrawal effects and it is so horrible. I have to agree with anyone that has mentioned this," I don't wish this on anyone" . I'm actually looking for any help or advice you may be able to offer and it would certainly be greatly appreciated.

This is a great video Dr. Marks! We have a elderly friend that has been taking Lorazepam for 12 years. She is now up to 2 pills a day. She has no kids, no siblings, is a widow, and lives by herself. So we are not family, but we help her as much as we can. She is beginning to show many of the side effects you describe here, and has clearly, CLEARLY developed a dependence. Her GP has been prescribing it to her the whole time. No psychiatrists involved unfortunately. I almost consider it malpractice. The question I am wrestling with is, at her age, is bringing up the possibility that her physical issues are linked to her dependence on lorazepam even worth it? Would the withdrawal be worse than the side effects? Could her body even withstand withdrawal at this point? This, of course, assumes she would even be interested in having the discussion...

Excellent insightful presentation! I believe benzodiazepines do have a benefit for those who legitimately need them. I've been on one for over two decades. Absolutely never abuse it and very very rarely ever take beyond prescribed dose.

I was hospitalized after attempting to off myself. For 6 weeks I was taking 3 2mg Adavan a day with the occasional half dose when I had panic attacks on the ward. When I was released from the hospital, they released me with a prescription for the benzo's. The first day I was okay but couldn't sleep. I didn't sleep at all for the next 5 days and experienced the worst panic attacks I've ever had. On day six I finally fell asleep, for four days. I woke up in the hospital because my friend had been trying to wake me up for 2 days and finally called an ambulance. I decided early in my life not to do drugs (addiction runs in my family) I never thought I'd have to deal with withdrawals like that and my heart goes out to anyone else who suffers through it.

Thanks, doctor! I was so amazed after taking Klonopin yesterday as it seemed like my tolerable, though still painful and problematic anxiety was finally absent and my life felt like heaven. After just my second day on it, the effect is no longer as wonderful even on a higher dose. Having tasted sanity, I don't want to return to my usual anxiety-ridden self, but I don't want to lose myself chasing the dragon of my tolerance-free first experience. I still don't know what to do, but this video was very helpful.

@@andrewcross8244 Xanex is fine @maximum of 20 mg. per 30 days. But I would advise finding another daily activity or herb for real grounding. To me it is the same as having 1 shot oof morphine post surgery. But for daily pain restricting necessary activities find a different way of life. Addiction is not living. For me Accupuncture and changing my thinking patterns helps . This is applicable to and for adults. For babies and youngsters I have no ideas. It breaks my heart to know that life is so hard and unfair .❤

Yes there's the physical tolerance that just means lower doses don't work anymore. Then there's the behavior of taking the pill to fill a void that's not related to the original reason you started taking it.

I was put on these things during covid. No one told me anything, they just said i look anxious and i was imagining the shortness of breath i went to ER for. They gave me two just to "calm down" and sleep. After 3 days, I was back and in pancic attack. Eventually the GP gave me a whole bottle, I would not take it daily and everytime i dont take it, I realised i was in a hot mess. THANK GOD the HOLY SPIRIT pointed out the root of my problems which was the bottle of anti-anxieties i got from the GP. You know what??? I called my employee for 1 month leave and I threw those things away cold turkey. It was the most horrible experience ever, the withdrawal was crazy. I though i was losing my mind but I am here to testify that IT IS POSSIBLE. Thank you Lord JESUS. My life was almost ruined.

He also gave me 75mg nerve tablet which contains pregabalin and notriptypilyn. In those 12 days i took almost 6/7 beer and 5/6 glass of hard drinks. But when i had constipation i stopped it. But after 3 days i got all the severe withdrawal symptoms. I actually couldn't explain what happened to me. After 2 months i still have some problem. Mainly my muscles are very weak in whole body and my esophagus and gut conpletely damaged. I have gone to many doctor i got no solution.Please help me what to do

Hi, Tracey. Thanks for the video. I have been having insomnia for the past 2 months. My first doctor gave me lorazepam and estazolam 1 mg each for a week, then I asked him to lower the dose to 0.5 then finally 0.25 for 1.5 months. The thing is, I am now with a different doctor who put me on Alprazolam 0.5 mg (a week now) taken once before bedtime, together with CBT for insomnia and I'm also seeing a psychologist for my anxiety. I'd like to proceed with the therapy minus the alprazolam. Do you think it's okay for me to taper off? And what is the final dose before I can be off of it completely?

Xanax withdrawal is a special portal into hell. In U.K., it’s not regularly prescribed, I used it illicitly. Doctors refused to taper me off with diazepam. I still have flashbacks from how awful it was.

The Dr isn’t crazy at all. If you titrate too quickly or cut too much, you need to reinstate and then go so much slower. It’s what I Had to do and it saved my life.

The trick bag of this medication, you bug the doctor for it because its a cure all in the beginning, meanwhile years later its near impossible to get off of. I would never say it should never be taken or used, but it is extremely addicting for anyone unaware they are self medicating. Great video by the way. Very professional, accurate and honest.

having a doctor all of the sudden decide that they want you off benzos within 2 weeks should be illegal, they should be trained on how to help somebody taper off such a dangerous medication. I've had to switch doctors 5 times because each one either wanted to keep me on more benzos after my severe episode ended, or they wanted to get me off them the hard way and just load me full of other medications for the symptoms of withdrawals. I did finally find a doctor that let me taper off slowly over the span of 2 months or so and so far its working amazing with VERY minimal symptoms. The best way to get off IMO is to taper off slowly and just use time and patience.

I'm in my 60's and because of my personal experience with doctors, I find most of them to be idiots who don't listen or understand their patients. However, now that I have found Dr Marks channel (and a few other Naturopathic docs) I am gaining "some" confidence that medicine ain't such a bad thing. My doc told me that you should either take benzos everyday or not at all. He didn't think it should be used irregularly. So ive been taking kolonopin for about 3 months at 1mg a day. Been weening off and im now at .5mg a day. Every 2 weeks i cut the dosage by .25 until im off. I have social anxiety, general anxiety, as well as exercise induced anxiety. For some reason lifting weights or running can trigger anxiety or a panic attack. And this started suddenly after 4 years of lifting weights 6 days a week. I couldnt work out, i was afraid to leave the house, i couldnt drive; it really sucked. The kolonopin helped me until i was able to deal with this and understand what as truley going on. Now im able to run a couple miles and do some moderate workouts. Im already experiencing some rebound anxiety from weening but im managing and hopefully once this is all over ill be better. I just didnt know what else to do when this started. My panic attacks make me feel like im going to pass out, legs get shakey, my vision gets fuzzy, feel like i need to pace and keep moving. Idk what started it but im giving it everything ive got to get over it.

Klonopin can easily be managed. You simply avoid tolerance. Avoid using as much as possible. So you really should use in increments, lowering to ceasing them as you try another medicationz

If not, you're fixing to have a good day! I have trich too. I'm 55. At one time(years) i was in real bad shape. I don't know if there's a med just for this or not. I stopped with hair pulling now i chew my lip. All day every day. It sucks too. I'm going to get a mouth guard to see if that helps. It's all OCD stuff you know. Yep. My doc suddenly stopped prescribing klonopin. The hydroxyzine didn't/does not cut it. I had uncontrollable shaking, off balance gait and a couple of seizures. He didn't care. Got rid of the doctor, but haven't been on benzodiazepines since. Still have anxiety where its hard to leave the house, affects my life with jobs & relationships. Smh

Declaring war against a traumatized person isn't healthy for them. I got gi dn radically severe TBI by a paid to serve and protect, after his employers had killed and stolen and maimed my kids cis I was on valium after being brain damaged by my father. 44 years later and doctor number 30 after two weeks intensive care for brain injury, then dumped in a caravan on a remote hill top that I used to bicycle out from no problem, unlike the car junkies. Doctors are paranoid about their reputations and the brain injury from TBI was denied. Six months Total amnesia and I'm getting lectured by people with zero experience in this. Creek water, no electricity, no heating. You too rich to know reality upper class snoots.

John Newmark Yes at first you will get that relief but then.. I was prescribed these for 26 years. When i slowly tried to come off (4mg Clonazepam a day) i ended up in the ER with severe withdrawal and life threatening symptoms. My Blood Pressure was 220 over 140. See what happened to Jordan Peterson (famous psycologist). If you think that Benzos are your friend, well they won't be for long. They will turn against you. During the withdrawal i had Akathisia and i was twitching. You seem not to know the dangers of these medicines.
