I'm a die-hard 1911 fan and no one panned the Beretta more than me when the M9s finally replaced our M1911A1s. These days, I realize that my youthful hatred was unfounded and like a lot of Marines, we just found it hard to move away from our .45s, especially with all the early reported stories concerning slide breakages. I ran the A1 pistol range for my unit whenever we qualified over at MCB Camp Johnson. After seeing literally thousands of rounds going down range, including some during Desert Storm, I can attest that I never saw one malfunction that was attributed to the gun itself. Looking back, it was the right time to move away from our aging 1911s and the M9 was the correct choice at the time. About 13-14 years ago, I finally picked up a 92FS if for anything, sentimental reasons. Although not exactly like the original M9 I was used to, it's still a fine gun and it sits proudly next to all my 1911s in my safe.
@orionexplorer14 күн бұрын
I carried a M9 for I would guess about 5 years out of the 7 years I was an MP. When we were on the range I never once hit the de-cocker and had a double action trigger pull. No one ever mentioned such a thing when we were shooting or in any safety classes we received. I don't know what people are doing to hit the de-cocker, but it was never an issue for me.

I used to have a collection of all the major versions of the Model 92. I had to sell the more rare ones when I fell on hard times, but I mention that to say, the safety on the frame is actually a return to form. They moved the safety from the frame to the slide per request from law enforcement and military in the Model 92S. They had a push button magazine release but it was on the grip instead of behind the trigger guard. They moved it to behind the trigger guard on the FS.

The cracking slides happened after navy seals shot 9mm proof loads over an over. Those same loads also cracked the frames of sig P226. Dont know about blown barrels on the 92x though.
@daktari17 күн бұрын
French contract versions also had cracking slides due to the use of P+ ammo (also caused problems on the MP5) on the early productions, the slide was modified and the earlier ones got a piece added that would stop the slide from hitting the shooter in case it broke. US SFG had issues with locking blocks breaking after a few 1000s rounds.

From my understanding, the breaking slides were from military units running very hot +p+ ammo that eventually started cracking
@smilingwolf198017 күн бұрын
If I remember correctly (reaching back about 20 years in the old MK1 memory system), the issue with the slides breaking was from the first generation of the M9's for the US Military. The corrective action was the relief cut in the back of the slide at the 7 'o clock position around the firing pin extension. This allowed the repetitive impacts from the hammer against the slide to not be as punishing over time. We use to scare the new guys into thinking their pistol was cracked by showing it to them. Sadly, Beretta never cooked up a solution to the locking blocks cracking as they get older. It is a pain in the but to get the slide back to clear the weapon when that happens. As to their safety...I have seen one drop out of an old leather military shoulder holster and hit the ground hard. It did not fire. The poor Marine carrying it never wanted to use a shoulder holster ever again though.

An interesting video of recent Beretta 92 variants, but when I saw 'Beretta 92 Evolution' I was expecting you to start way back with the first model that had the mag release in the heel of the grip and a frame-mounted safety, of which I have an early PT92, which was a clone of the early Beretta 92. Since I typed 'Taurus', I will admit that I prefer the frame decock safety of the later PT92 over the Beretta slide safety. Besides going UP for safe, the Taurus safety also works in DA mode! *Awaiting the slings and arrows of righteous indignation...* 😜

The 92FS/M9 is probably my all time favorite pistol. When I shot one next to a Glock 17, I was blown away. I couldn't believe they were firing the same calibre. My ideal Beretta 92 would probably be the 92FS, but scaled down by 10-20%. Not a huge complaint, but it the tiniest bit too big for most use other than at the range. I basically want the oldschool styling of the classic Beretta look, but with modern capabilities such as more capacity for a smaller size in something in between the size of the 92 and the 84, with a frame mounted safety. I don't care for the use and styling of the light rail, which then changes the trigger guard which in my opinion ruins the look. Its funny that the same company can make the most beautiful looking pistol (92FS) and the most ugly looking one (PX4), imo.

@MacDorsai17 күн бұрын
You guys missed the two Ber92 models that address all of your problems and concerns. The 92G or any DA 92 with a "G" conversion and the 92xi SA. No one ever won a gunfight by putting their gun on safe faster than the other guy. Yes, pushing the slide mounted decocker is a little bit awkward, but it uses stronger thumb muscles than those that push up on the frame mounted safety. Furthermore, that is why the "G" conversion is superior, it is a decocker only and doesn't disable the gun, it just lowers the hammer. You can clear a malfunction and accidently depress the decocker (or do it intentionally!) and it will leave the hammer cocked and able to fire when the slide moves forward. The 92xi SA is a single action only with a very good trigger pull that functions like a 1911. With an LTT trigger job, my trigger pull is about 2 3/4lbs with a crisp break, no overtravel and about a 1mm reset. My 92 with a "G" conversion to the safety-decocker and an LTT TJIB has a fantastic DA and SA trigger pull.

Cracking/flying slides happened on the early 92, by the 92S in the late 80s the issue was corrected. If you get a very early MAS G1 (French Gendarmerie contract) you might still get one with a slide that will break. US SFG had issues of breaking the locking block on the barrel in the '00s, which locked the slide closed with a live round in. Didn't read any followups but it might have been a bad series, and it happened after many thousand rounds so it likely wouldn't have been noticed on civilian market guns. My issue with the 92 is I don't like the ergonomics one bit.

My very early Taurus PT92AF has a frame mounted safety, as did the Berettas produced in their Brazilian factory. Taurus acquired the tooling and machinery when Beretta left the country in 1980 and moved them into their factory. These early Taurus pistols were indistinguishable from the Berettas produced but for the markings. The slide mounted safety was adopted in Italy in 1976 as the 92S because, supposedly, police and military preferred the slide mounted safety. As my Taurus is VERY early production, it is compatible with almost all pre-1976 Beretta 92 parts. I have owned both but prefer the Taurus for the frame mounted safety... and MUCH lower cost.

Is it really so hard to have both a manual safety AND a decocker on a hammer fired DA/SA pistol? I'm sure there's mechanical interactions that make it difficult to implement on many fire control mechanisms, but it seems to me more efficient to solve those and produce one model with both for the entire market than to split production over submodels with only one or the other for different slices of the market.

I’ve even won several 2011 prizes at matches with my 92x open rig over the last couple years and continue to run the 92x. Yours isn’t set up properly to make a formed opinion. The steel frame isn’t designed to be a carry piece. It’s designed to be a competitor in limited and carry optic. Beretta has plenty of other offerings for the defensive carry role than a fully steel framed, full framed brig slide piece.

In regards to the breaking slides that was due to them running several thousand rounds (minimum) of 9mm Nato intended for use in SMG's with particularly high pressures, at or above the standard proof loading for 9mm nato. The proof pressure for 9mm Nato is 45,700 psi with a standard maximum service pressure of 36,500 PSI. It was nearing pressures seen in conventional rifle rounds. Under the same conditions other handguns would have failed as well - they are just not made to constantly shoot proof loads thousands of times. This issue would have happened regardless of the gun. Also this effected an extremely small number of guns; To the best of my knowledge, 14 slides cracked in testing, with 3 coming back and hitting the shooter leading to some cuts and one guy losing a tooth, and 10 of these failures occurring after over 10k rounds. After this the slides were reinforced further despite the ammo loading issue. This is the only circumstance in which I know of any Beretta slides breaking like that. With that said, I carry an M9A4 with a TLR2S, Trijicon RMR Type 2 on a Beretta plate and a Beretta Comp. Have over 2500 rounds through it. Love the gun.
