I was in the Marines when we adopted the 9mm. Due to the smaller round, many marines who carried .45s were then issued M16s. Now these were combat troops, LTs, mortar men, assistant machine gunners etc. and having them carry M16's gave us much more firepower anyway. Now for MPs and basic security the 9mm was good, even though out tactics changed. In the Corps we treated our weapons like gold, however you are correct we used them very heavily and in the worst conditions. From extreme cold weather to Desert Warfare to mud and saltwater and many thousands of rounds. I often wondered why they didn't let us test weapons during training before they adopted them. I carried one of the first FN M249 SAWs, biggest piece of shit ever! Thanks for the best gun channel!!

@DV8 *** Yeah, we cleaned the bluing right off. If you pried the flash suppressor off it was easy to clean that ring. I just meant we kept them clean and in shape. The Berettas were abused because no one could possible keep track of how many rounds were fired. I've used comet and a cordless drill already, but I've never seen anything brake on M16s A2. Despite the shit we did, those weapons ran. I remember taking all our regular issued weapons to the rifle ranges, I qualled with a 203 on twice If I remember. They took a beating and still fired accurate at 500 yds iron sights. We were constantly cleaning and maintaining weapons. L 3/2 here. I did carry that 9 mm for 6 months and my roommate was an instructor, They couldn't take a beating like the .45.

I bought my Beretta 92f in January of 1989. 29 years later, and probably over 10,000 rounds, I can count the number of malfunctions on one hand - and those were weak reloads.

I own a 92fs and it performs beautifully. Not the same model discussed but relatively the same. Used it in an action pistol with some mods and came out at #6 out of 30+ contestants. Another gentleman had it and came out in 3rd place. It is such an underrated handgun secondary to opinions and misconceptions

“It’a looka nice!” Hilarious! Beretta is an amazing pistol, but recently I had a bad experience. I purchased a brand new Beretta 92FS last year and the finish was terrible. There was a burr running through the inside of the trigger guard which I slightly filed down, the anodizing around the proof marks were spotty, the slide was marked up, the sights banged up and there were chips on the inside of the frame.

I bought one recently and I love it. I replaced all the plastic part with factory steel, and aluminum parts. I also installed Alumagrips with the Beretta logo on them, a D hammer spring, a Wilson Combat (Wolff) factory weight trigger conversion unit. To top it off I had night sights put on, and did the G conversion. This one sweet shooting weapon. Seen Mr Gunsandgear video you mentioned. I don't understand the lack of maintenance. I was in the Marine Corps when Reagan was president, and weapons and equipment maintenance was emphasized ad nauseam. Of course these are different times, and I never fired a shot in anger but you would expect that kind of lack of maintenance from the German Army getting run out of Russia in WW2, not from the biggest, baddest and most funded military the world has ever know.

Very reliable and good looking pistol. Have put thousands of rounds through a 92A1 with zero malfunctions. D-spring does wonders for trigger pull. Only recommendation is to change out polymer trigger with steel trigger as well as recoil spring. Recoil spring isn’t necessary but steel trigger eliminates “trigger flex” ( I never noticed it) and makes for a nicer trigger pull. I can tell a difference between the polymer and steel trigger but can’t really say what it is. It just feels better.

I have a 92A1, if for no other reason than it's a Beretta and it's great looking. I don't even like Beretta's that much. But with that rounded trigger guard and rail, it's quite a looker (especially with aftermarket G10 grips) and something that's fun to handle and even shoot every now and then. ;-)

I really like the 92A1, I have 3. I don't know if you're aware but one other thing that's different on the 92A1 is that the lug on the front of the slide where the recoil spring sits is slightly wider than a standard 92. Some people really don't like this about the 92A1 because they like to swap slides around. I don't do that so I don't really care.

Good overview. One thing you forgot to mention: the 92a1 and 96a1 both have somewhat thicker slides over the regular m9 and m9a1. I like the overbuilt nature of the 92/96, but I still prefer some of the features and ergonomics on the military versions. If everything were to be combined into one pistol, you’d have the ultimate beretta as you point out.

As Wilson Combat shaves off the trigger guard to make their 92 series of Battle Pistols, but the chances of us smashing our trigger guards in a gunfight are probably slim to none. My Wilson Centurion has a half 92A1 frame, round trigger guard, 1913 rail and M9 type push button take down pin and M9A1 grip checking. The slid is close to the 92A1 but short like the Beretta Compact, it has the dove tail front sight. The Wilson also has the improved block. The Wilson has the best parts of all three.

The military one are not polymer. The locking blocks were outsourced and not made to OEM specs. Same problem with M4 bolts breaking. They do not conform to OEM standards but are cheaper. The army has messed up many weapons by not using OEM parts for weapons.

I agree with you here, that it will be nice to see a lot of these features combined in a single pistol. That said, I have to disagree on the trigger guard, I actually prefer the profile on the original M9, with that little lip on it. Maybe I'm just partial to the Aesthetics and I've watched too many John Woo movies, but I thought that was always the classic look for the 92 series. Pairing that, with a true 1913 rail would be Perfecto in my opinion. Also, you should check out the _92 G SD._ It's a pretty rare variant, but it seems to have nearly all the features you would like ( true 1913 rail, checkered front and back strap with, Brigadier slide, changeable sites, capable of using the internal buffer, etcetera)

I am looking on getting one of these Beretta I like them I just checked out some today at my local gun store. People say they are to big and heavy but I held a stainless one with the rubber grip and one without the rubber grip and the 92a1 and they to me did not seam big and heavy they felt good in the hand and smooth when you rack the slide. To me the felt better in the hand then a Springfield xd mod 2 full size I looked at only thing I don't like so much about it is the plastic guide rod but that's no big deal to replace.i always wanted to get a Beretta m9 or 92 with a rail I think I am going to pick one up from buds because they are a little bit cheaper than my gun shop. Just ordered mine buds had less then 5 of them left I was like shit so just went and did it. I don't care what people say I just have a special spot for the berettas

I own both the new m9a1 and the beretta 92a1..... each has their own place in my personal opinion. The m9a1 is a lighter gun in comparison to the 92a1. The main difference is the thicker rail on the 92a1 that adds to the weight. Actually the weight does help in the recoil in comparison to the m9a1. I keep the m9a1 next to my bed with a olight Valkyrie mini and a lasermax laser guide-rod. The beretta 92a1 is my range gun that shoots everything I can throw at it and than some. With over two thousand rounds and counting there has never been a single malfunction on my m9a1 and it is still going strong. I have not yet had the opportunity to shoot a Beretta with the Brigadier slide, but I am thinking that it is in comparison the slide on the beretta m9a1 however without one side by side for comparison I can't be 100% sure.

Insofar as the polymer components, they are still steel, but coated with polymer. H&K likes to do this as well. The reasoning I was given is not that it was to decrease weight or even cut manufacturing cost. It's that those particular components, the trigger, safety levers are the most manipulated by human hands, and over time the metal finish on these parts will noticeably wear from that compared to the rest of the pistol. The polymer coating really can't do that. Underneath the epidermal polymer is just...more polymer that looks exactly the same. Until the steel core which you're not going to reach from wear unless are deliberately abusing the pistol with the specific purpose of reaching that metal core. But, like everyone else, I prefer the metal parts. Otherwise it doesn't feel like a wondernine.

Nicholas Visco no, they are plastic. Oddly enough from a structural stand point, it is lighter than the steel. The steel offers no mechanical benefit. No stress part. I prefer steel myself but Beretta did not degrade any quality with the change. Same as the guide rod. Also a no stress part.

If Beretta would make these in a “cocked and locked” only version they would have something. Being of small stature the double action feature is hard to reach and requires me to slide my hand around the grip to be able to reach the trigger causing my grip to be out of position for subsequent shots.

@@MrTangolizard I spent two years living between Malta and France with a lot of travel to the UK and everything was more expensive. But, my comparison was with the cost of living in the Southern US. If comparing costs between Europe & California or New England then the difference would be negligible.

newdefsys I’ve lived in Texas went to high school there I’ve pretty much traveled to the USA 10/12 times in the past decade and I would agree that 10 years ago that was true but not now unless you are talking about capital city’s fuel is loads cheaper in the USA but things like electric water and utility’s are more in the USA I also found going out in the USA costs more and my god tipping wow it’s crazy just pay your workers right

I seen a 92a1 at a gun show next to all the other 92-series variants and it seemed to have a nicer finish. It seemed to be a deeper black and shinier, I don't think it's the exact same finish as the other Berettas.

Military required more flat black cause the sun would reflect to much on the shiny black in the soldiers eyes while trying to shoot

This is a wonderful video, full of information on the 92s and their issues. I'd be curious if that polymer buffer can be retrofitted to earlier 92s like the 92fs? Also , there isn't much info out there about different strength recoil springs (not hammer springs) , do you have any thoughts/ recommendation on that? Thanks for the great work, it's all to rare to see this level of factual content on utube. Keep up the good work!

I thought the trigger on the 92a1 was polymer coated metal. Looking at my 96a1 I can see where the polymer starts and its metal underneath it.

@@davidlol957 Yes there is a small bit of metal in it. I had planned to remove the poly to see just how much but have not done it yet. based on weight and feel compared to my metal one I would say not much.

barefoot bob yea I replaced myn with the Wilson combat shortt reach trigger. When it was in the gun you couldn’t tell but once i got it out you could see it was mostly polymer with metal reinforcement.

Polymer coated yes. I installed Wilson Combat's short reach trigger which is all steel. I do like it better, although I wish WC radiused the front edges better.

I really don’t like how the rounded off trigger guard looks. I think the squared trigger guard with the checkering or lines on the front looks really good and its even an iconic look for Beretta. I just bought my first Beretta and it’s a 92X. Besides for not having a threaded barrel the only other thing I dont like is that it doesnt have the squared trigger guard. It was $475 after $100 mail-in-rebate though, I couldnt pass it up and I really cant complain.

I've also heard that 1) polymer guide rods put less stress on the locking lug, and 2) captive recoil springs are better, but they also necessitate a dual captive whereas a longer spring that can't be contained does the same thing with greater reliability. Again, I've heard these things, but I can't confirm them.

Broke my back as a young man so unfortunately I was unable to serve. That being said, virtually every person I've spoken to that did absolutely hates this pistol. Nice review regardless. I'm interested to hear what you have to say about the LMT you hinted towards the other night in your live stream. Lol, after watching your video I went to Brownells and purchased a MARS.

Great video as usual. I have a question, you said the base plate was longer on the 92A1 for the two extra rounds, but the magazines look to be the same height. Are you sure that's why it's thicker?

I would really like to see you review the Beretta 92 clones that are out there (Girsan Regard and the Taurus whatever). I have taken a look at the Regard (as I am on a budget as far as spending money on guns goes), and it seems like a great weapon for the price point (400.00); I'm wondering if there is something I'm missing.
