Well done Chris. I definitely agree they should have just migrated to the A3. A full conversion isn't necessary as the parts are interchangeable. I would just have just added M9A3's as necessary, or swap the slides/barrels for those units which need the functionality. The pistol is the least used firearm in combat, and the Beretta has already proven to be rock solid. Changing to a whole new system is a colossal waste of money.

I completely agree to the superiority of the A3. The chassis system is completely unnecessary in a military pistol and I fear will simply cause problems. We had enough issues with whole M9s walking away from the armory (sometimes by the hundreds). I can't imagine how much easier it will be to "misplace" M17 components. As far as the A2 program was concerned, those kind of upgrade programs are a mixed bag as far as success is concerned, but I think that the nature of the changes and Beretta's long history would have given it an excellent chance of success. Thanks for a very informative video! This history of the evolution of the M9 is very educational. The military certainly missed the boat in not simply going with the M9A3 upgrades. The parkerized Checkmate mags were per milspec. Parking was not a problem with single-stack mags like M1911 or double-stack/double feed mags like M14s. It turned out to be a huge problem with the double-stack/single-feed M9 mags, in the 'moon dust' of the Middle East, though the mags passed the 'normal' sand tests. A new polymer finish was developed & specced, and the problem went away, even with Checkmate magazines. However it happened, that mag issue was a big black eye for the M9.
@adlerarmory8382 Жыл бұрын
Mil-Spec doesnt mean special.unicorn horn dust mixed with pixie dust. It is the minimum quality the DOD will accept at the bidded price. Made by.the lowest bidder with set asides for protected classes.

@p51mustang246 жыл бұрын
Considering that the new pistols were a minimal upgrade, if anything, the m9a3 should've been a no brainer. I'd probably prefer glocks but they should have just upgraded an already perfectly good system. Until they develop a new caliber, any change in handgun is going to be a sidegrade or a very minor upgrade.
@burmiester16 жыл бұрын
The APX is better than a Glock, it's what the military should have adopted but didn't. Glock screwed the pooch because they didn't even bother to meet the requirements for a modular pistol. They were so confident they were going to win.
@p51mustang246 жыл бұрын
The APX is quite nice, but it's a marginal upgrade over the m9. If I personally had an m9 I carried I'd happily switch to an APX, but the considerations are different for the military. And the modular requirement is retarded. The usefulness of modularity is basically limited to civilians living in countries were they can only own one serial number. Same goes for the caliber conversion kits on rifles. 99% of people who buy them never use it.
@jellyfrosh91026 жыл бұрын
what I'm wondering is why do they want a modular handgun so bad? Handguns are barely used in the military.

I was a federal, state and local law enforcement officer, that was disabled in the line of duty. As I try to be an advocate for the disabled 2A, and outdoor communities, I would like to contend that where the use of a polymer guide rod is not necessarily a bad thing, a stainless steel or tungsten one, as well as an addition of a light to the dust cover, does help in reducing felt recoil. The Beretta already has less slide mass, as well as not having the traditional Browning tilt barrel design, which actually help in reducing felt recoil already. Despite not having a modern “disabled pistol” offering (like S&W ShieldEZ & Walther CCP) I do still recommend the Beretta 86 & 32 Tomcat to disabled shooters, with recoil sensitivity and reduced hand strength.

Good video. I think Sig is a very good manufacturer and the p320 is most likely going to be a very good weapon for the DoD, but the Beretta pistols were also damned good and the only fault I ever found with them was the weak ammo that was procured to shoot in them. I spent years thinking all 9mm was garbage because the rounds that the Marines would have us shoot were trash. I got out and into the civilian world only to discover that the 9mm ammo available in the private sector is superior to the cheap ammo the Marines would buy, and it made me respect 9mm as a viable round.

I carried an early version of the 92 FS with LAPD back from the early 90s and was wondering if it's possible to upgrade the hardware to M9 A3 level with the exception of the picatinny rail because that takes welding. I want to update it as much as possible as my daughter has become quite fond of the 92 FS and will inherit it when she turns 21. I want to ensure that it is as reliable as possible. It gets about 1500 rounds a year put through it and would have more but I'm cycling each of my guns through her hands so she has a perspective about the jewel that my 92 FS has been.

I like the Sig 226, 225, 229 and 220 but the P320 in my opinion is inferior to the Beretta. They should have stay with the Beretta and left the P320 alone. I have shot all of these pistols and have carried all of them. I am not a fan of striker fired guns. They should have kept the Beretta in service or gone with a 226 if they wanted a 9mm, but since they had the Beretta, they should have kept it. It is a very good service pistol.

I’m no expert by any means and there’s people that are way smarter than me but I have 2 theories as to why beretta lost the contract. First being the lawsuit against the government. Second is that they had all these years to upgrade their platform but only did it when the us military said we want to replace you. I equate it to a relationship ship where your partner keeps saying they’ll change and be better but never does until you leave but by then it’s too late. All that being said I just bought an M9A3 and can’t wait to get it
@SmallArmsSolutions4 жыл бұрын
Actually, wrong on the second. Beretta, like Colt has regularly presented the government with updates to improve the weapons but since the requirements never changed to warrant updates the DoD refused. The government never adopted the significantly better locking block for the m9 pistol. Only when COTS guns were bought did the military get the updated parts.

I agree the upgraded M9 is a very good gun. I think the govt really just wanted a striker fired system. As to the modularity, do you think the P320 and the ability to field both the M17 and M18 has any advantage? I know the US has not bought any M11s in a long time, but it seems like a lot of organizations have moved to a compact sized handgun--was the xM17 pitched as having the potential to save cost by replacing both the M11 and the M9 by having both M17 and M18 versions?
