If you’re in between sizes on mountain bikes and are trying to choose which to go with, this video will not help you at all. However I can provide a little advice. A larger bike will tend to give you the sensation of sitting “inside” the bike. This can be both confidence inspiring and more stable. If you like the feeling of sitting on top of the bike, and being able to throw it around and play on it, going smaller might be the ticket. I personally prefer smaller.
What we’re doing today is strangely consistent with the above sentiment. On the size XL Canyon Neuron I tested, I was indeed a lot more stable and confident. On the 14” Prevelo toddler bike I was most definitely sitting way up on top.

Canyon Neuron 5 bit.ly/45DYglU
Considering this bike has a dropper post, Rockshox front and rear, and excellent styling for under $2000, I think it’s a no brainer for someone of any size. Keep in mind, it’s not just available in XL 🤣
Prevelo Zulu One bit.ly/3p9KGq6
I’m slightly embarrassed to say that I’ve ridden this bike several times, and it’ll be what my daughter rides very soon. Need I say more?

Ok, but genuinly, if you are between 2 sizes: - Choose the smaller one if you like to jib around and have a fun and manuverable bike, both in the air and with tires on the ground. - Choose the larger one if your priority is speed on the trail or racing. It will give you more stability and overall be the faster bike in the large majority of trails. HAVE FUN WITH YOUR NEW BIKE!

Generally good advice. I know geometry is more complex than a youtube post, but generally it's easier to make a small bike bigger than a big bike smaller. I find this particularly in road bikes. It's also confusing out there with so many manufacturers, geo charts, different ways of measuring the same thing, and the days of demo rides getting fewer and fewer.
@rmprit0137
@rmprit0137 Жыл бұрын
If your area requires alot of climbing, go with a smaller frame. Less weight and maybe better peddling position. I just switched from a large to a medium ( I am 5'8"), and it has been a world of difference in my efficiency.
@iammarkstewart
@iammarkstewart Жыл бұрын
@@rmprit0137 Yes, I'm generally a "medium", but I usually find my bikes (all circa 2017) a bit short so I've just gone with a 20mm longer stem (35 to 50, or 50 to 70). Gets me a bit of weight over the front but no so much that descending is a nightmare. You can also experiment with the fore/aft of the saddle. I'd hate to try and shorten a big bike as they usually have a 35mm stem and it's hard to shorten that up. And shoving the seat all the way forward can be as wonky as all the way back. If you're maxed on saddle fore/aft you should consider a re-fit.

Same here man. I have a xxl xc bike and a large full suspension for manuverability
@IOUaUsername
@IOUaUsername Жыл бұрын
I'm 6'1" and when I bought my first "proper" mountain bike I got an XL. HUGE MISTAKE. My experience was the same as yours, having no ability to lean back and being scared on even small declines. It made me think that since becoming a full grown man I'd somehow lost the ability to ride the way I could as a teenager. So for years I didn't own any bike until recently when I decided to buy a cheap medium downhill bike to tool around my farm on and it all came rushing back. All the skills are still there, I just needed a smaller size because my legs are short. Height means nothing.

I'm 6'3" with an XL hard-tail, and a L hard-tail (2017 Marin Bobcat 4). I admit I like riding the smaller bike better. They are both 29ers, but the smaller bike has 2.2" wheels, while the XL has 2.5" wheels. Being lighter and smaller makes for a fun ride. If the bike feels too big then don't force it and just go with a smaller bike.
@norcalchrismeister
@norcalchrismeister Жыл бұрын
@@joecanuck3751 I've been thinking of getting a large hardtail like a Roscoe 9. It has a slightly longer reach than other large hardtails so I think I could ride it comfortably. I could also install a longer stem.

For what it’s worth, stated size is a terrible, TERRIBLE metric for choosing a bike. I’m 6’1” and a progressive geometry size large works well for me, and an XL giant trance is too small, while still having the seat tube too long to get out of my way. It’s all about the numbers.

I like to size down. More fun and more comfortable. I'm 6' so the bike shops usually put me on XL bikes but those bigger bikes just wear me out. Although they can be faster and more confidence inspiring, I'm not racing or trying to set strava times so smaller bikes are the way to go for me.

I am frequently between sizes and here's what I've discovered throughout the years. Between adjusting the dropper post height (having a dropper in general), dozen of stem options, dozen of bar widths and rises, crank length, and so forth, bike fit comes from the harmony of the components and rarely the frame size alone. The point is just pick one, it likely doesn't matter as much as you think. Especially when you consider that bike sizes brand to brand very so differently. I've ridden mediums that feel like larges from some brands and larges that feel like mediums even though the "sizes" say they are the same. The point is if you're in between sizes odds are you can ride both and it doesn't matter what you pick you're likely going to change the components to make it work for you regardless.

This is why it is good to put kids on the largest wheel size they can manage if you want to take them on trails at a young age. Every little pebble is a hangup on tiny wheels with little legs and can result in frustration for them. Kids bikes that are geometrically a bit like 29ers allow a bit larger wheel for a given kid size. Entertaining video!
