Should I overseed my bermudagrass ?

so Spring is here, you have bare spots in your Bermudagrass and you want to know if you should overseed your Bermudagrass to correct this problem. Most people do not know you should not overssed your Hybrid bermuda lawn with Bermudagrass seeeds. there are a lot of things that could go rong with this. now if you have a section of you Bermudagrass lawn that did not get any sod on it then you can sow or overseed that part of you lawn.

My lawn was fescue sod. Then the neighbors Bermuda started creeping over.. I fought it for like 6 years.. then i got sick for a year. When I got back my lawn was 75% Bermuda. Now its 100%.. yeah I gave up.🤣

Folks that buy scotts bermuda seed are the same people that buy soil and screws from big box stores. I bought 300 dollars of that scotts and had a 300 dollar water bill that month keeping the hulls moist. I have 15% germination if that. Cut up sod is the method i use now and it works so much better.

You are right but they do have the Bermuda seeds you can buy that will match your sod. It is expensive but they do have the hybrid seeds

I had an area of my yard become stressed and became bare after I did some work around it. This was in September. Now the grass is about to emerge and this bare spot has filled in pretty good. It's not perfect but I'm gonna let the Bermuda take care of it.

Glad I came across your channel, I'm out here in Tx lawn in shambles due to neglect. Last year I threw down a contractors mix which didnt last the winter and made the lawn look so much worse this time around with all the dead grass not to mention more work for me to remove it all and expose the naked soil again. After that I moistened the soil and seeded the area with some bermuda garden weasled the area and hit it with the seed again. The area in question is shaded a good part of the day but I am hoping the seed take well and keep this problem area looking healthy.

Lol....one house n my neighborhood directly in front of me had real grass her husband put down couple years ago when I moved here. The rest of us had weed and all the above. My neighbor to the right of me has the grass ppl coming taking care of her weeds but she has this big oak tree n the middle of her yard. The grass is balding due to the tree being so big that it can’t get sunlight. Her fiancé put hay down but they have tru green coming out they spray weed n feed pre emergent which kills that hay because that it weed when it grows. But when I follow this guy I’m going to sit on my front porch with my legs crossed!!!

Great video and thanks for all the info.. I know you said May or June I tried to do mine now. I had some bare spots that was covered by some trees and then they cut all the trees down so my yard looks nice just trying to put some in the bare areas, and I think its a mixture of hybrid and common but it is growing on the bare spots. I just dug it up and mixed the seed with the dirt then put down a little Pead moss, then put a little straw on top of it. I'm not sure if its going to work but hey its my yard.

1st most important is to mow regularly with a sharp blade and to keep it short below 2 inches. Most weeds don't like to be cut short so they will die off and Bermuda will choke them out. 2nd most important is before throwing down NPK is to get a soil test so you know what is needed. 3rd most important is to give your grass and soil what it needs nutrition water and sunlight. Build your soil with humic acid and carbon to make the nutrients available to the plant. If you have heavy shade Bermuda is not for you... it loves the Sun and thrives in blazing heat.

I just cut my yard monday i put some scotts Bermuda grass and Pennington Bermuda as well cause i live in west texas i watered the grass Tuesday night for about 2 hrs at night yesterday i raked on the bald spots i had and layed seeds with my hand spreader on 5th setting and then watered yard for about 2 hrs after laying seeds untill about 10pm and then it sprinkled light till this morning around 6am now ill water it again tonight or should i do it 3 times a day insted of once a day 2 hrs in the later afternoon around 8pm which would be better thanks for the help as well

BYD, it’s “reseed” in the Spring, “overseed” in the Fall. What’s the reason why folks don’t overseed in the Fall out there? Rye can recover from frost in my experience.

Hybrid BermudaGrass does not need to be over seeded at at. Guys up north with cool season reseed their lawns because it grows in clumps . BermudaGrass spreads by top runners and underground roots. When guys reseed or overseed their Bermuda grass the lawn will look patchy in most cases. Now starting a lawn from BermudaGrass seed is cool and you can reseed overseed all you want. BermudaGrass seeds only germinate in the Summer or where temps are over 80 consistently. People who do this don’t reed the product bag where it clearly states when to sow BermudaGrass. The problem is people watching KZbin videos are not understanding that. They are following a cool seas channel and using cool season growing strategies. It can be done but I highly recommend you don’t.

Also it can be a waste of money if overseeded too early, especially here in Ga with the storms. One good storm and all of that seed is washed away because it never germinated.

My soil is terrible in east TN. Hard red clay. The builders just laid sod down on top no soil. The Bermuda grass in my yard dies and isn't thick weeds come up everywhere. I want the Scotts to take over. It looks nicer and is a stronger grass

When our house was built last year, half of the yard was sodded with Bermuda grass that had been over seeded with ryegrass and the other half was sodded with solid Bermuda. The solid Bermuda side is much thicker and established fairly well when it was laid. When the Bermuda went dormant last winter, the rye grass (that had burned off in the heat of the summer) came back STRONG. It looked good on that side of my lawn, but the problem is it was ONLY on one side of the lawn. It seems like the existence of rye grass on that side has stunted the Bermuda’s ability to spread. Would you suggest overseeding with Bermuda seeds for that? Or just stick with it and hope the Bermuda spreads to the bare spots left from the burned off rye grass?

I personally would not Dethatch this late in the season. You can still core aerate if lawn is growing and lawn soil is not dry. Remember what ever you decide to do there is no quick fix.

I have GA clay also. I have used Trugreen for past two years. Not sure if my lawn was sodden due to I have 4 different types of grass. You can see the difference in Summer an in winter when they are all dormant. I just want all Bermuda. Should I overseed to get that consistency? Over seeding a hybrid sod lawn would only make it worst. try to get the unknown out while it’s dormant. There’s no quick fix to that problem. Areas you remove I’d take plugs from other areas in lawn and let it spread. This process is a long one though. The seeds in the bag are not the same type of grass the sod is.

What about using Arden 15 hybrid seed for over seeding? I had tiftuf Bermuda put in three years ago. I have been using true green to service my yard since I don’t have the time other then mowing. BermudaGrass seeds only germinate in warm weather. Best time is late Sprung Early Summer. If you do in Fall or Winter 🥶 your results will be bad. Cool season lawns overseed in fall or early Spring.

april johnson hard to say. Soil conditions, weather construction, watering, starter fertilizer. There are a bunch of deciding factors. It’s possible you may not get good results. I’d suggest you read the bag, it normally states how long it may take.

There is an area near Jones creek Emory hospital that has a grass that is always gown and green the entire year! Please what kind of grass that stays always green even in winter. Chad I can only assume they have a tri mix or quad mix fescue type lawn that has seeds that tolerates heat, sun, shade and cool weather. Your back lawn will always be thin or won’t grow in shade if it’s Bermuda.

Chad the BermudaGrass will choke out the fescue. If you want fescue you’ll have to literally kill all the fescue. If you are in the south that fescue will struggle.

I was thinking of getting some blackjack seeds off of Amazon to go with my Bimini what do think the color differences would be? Or should I just stick with the Bimini plugs?

I’d top dress . You can do seeds but that grass more than likely won’t match the grass that’s already established.

It's June....has your bare spots filled in? I'm curious.....because I aerated two weeks ago and overseeded with Scott's BermudaGrass Seed as well as applying Slow-Release Fertilizer....starting to see my bare spots green a bit but can't tell if it's frrom seeding or the existing grass just starting to grow....I do see some baby grass in some of the bare spots.

I just bought my first house. My dad had Kentucky blue, so this is a whole new ball game for me. About 40% of the lawn is just dirt the other 60% is patchy Bermuda. The dirt is hard packed and Red blow sand in places I’ve been watering it because my coworker says it will spread with water alone. This weekend I was planing on putting soil down and putting seed down and watering it also the lawn is large by my standards about an half an acre. I just want a lawn to make my old man proud haha. Also I installed sprinklers and have them watering the entire lawn 2 times a day to try and get some spread. Is this too much or too little? I also fertilized

The key is to keep the seeds moist, so you’ll need to keep an eye out on it.

HELP: Hey byd. I live in snellville GA, I did overseed with scotts!, Mowed to 1.5 In April, aerated with Home Depot aerater . And spread seeds with spreader. Seeds started to grow after about 3 weeks you can see definitely a different green “darker” , but now in june. Grass looks spotty . When Im in house looking down from 2nd floor at grass you can see the spots .. but looking at it from road side you can’t. I want to fill in the spots , im scared 😱 of ironite because last year it burned the entire lawn. The fertilizer im currently using is Milorganite ! Last app was memorial weekend. What should i do ? should I spread pure dirt which you did in one of your vids last year?
