I was really lucky to see Bernard Purdie in SF last year, at a great little venue. So many amazing Bay Area drummers in the packed house. He was like a kid on his birthday, heh. Incredible stuff, thanks Rick!

One of my favorite memories of my days working in the studio was getting to hang when Purdie, Rainey, Richard Tee, and Cornell Dupree were recording tracks for two albums for Joe Cocker. Watching them work was amazing not much ever said, but when tape was rolling the eye contact between then was all they needed. Another great memory I am a huge Jeff Beck fan. I went to see Beck with his Rough and Ready band in concert and Bernard Purdie walks out and it the drummer. What an great night Jeff Beck with Bernard Purdie.

This is amazing and hilarious. He’s so real, warm and that permeates his groove and feel. That’s why he’s the hit maker. He makes those grooves look easy, the fills are perfect, but… not so easy. Otherwise there would be many like him, but there’s only one Bernard Purdie.

Totally! And some of the music he has played is really difficult. He always seems to avoid the subject of charts. He MUST be a great reader -surely?- to have done the Steely Dan albums for example.

In Atlanta a few years back I had the fortune of playing Smiths Olde bar for a benefit show. We were the band right before the headliner, which had Mr. Purdie on drums. I was the drummer and had to play on a crappy back line kit. It sounded like shit to me. But when Mr. Purdie got up and played on the same kit, it sounded amazing. He made those drums feel and sound incredible.

I don't know who this guy is, but I LOVE listening to these older cats! Takes me back to the late 70s when I was a stage rat for a local band in the Mid Hudson Valley. The music and instruments were REAL back then. Such an honor to listen to him.

Mr Purdie is FINALLY showing his age - when he talks. Then he talks with his drums........ I shake my head as I hear him talk - he punctuates his speech with his feet. I'm sure he's totally unaware he's doing it. The man is symbiotic with his drums.

Hi Rick Beato. Can you please look at the band Sleep Token. And watch any of the last drops in the last 6-8 weeks and do a "What makes this song" About one of your choices. Or something else. These guys are the best ever in production. They are so taking the world by storm right now. Thanks for this video. In no way do I want to steal from this. Thanks Rick

That's really interesting that you say that. I've heard several interviews with Purdie and although he always comes across as very likeable (he is happy to admit that he might have been difficult to get along with at times; maybe similar to Buddy Rich in that respect) but there seems to be a chasm between his spoken word and his ability, not necessarily behind the kit, but in the studio- to produce such incredible parts that sound so natural, but are often deceptively (very) difficult. For example his playing on The Royal Scam- his musical intelligence is off the charts!
