I love how Danaher's ability to create and communicate jiu jitsu theory is so good, a longtime black belt like Bernardo Farias sees the info as revelatory! Danaher is filling a huge demand for understanding why and how Brazilian jiu jitsu works and these videos where Bernardo is like "I never thought of it that way" and "it makes so much sense" exemplify the importance of Danaher's work! I've come to a point where I don't think the closed guard is interesting, but Danaher's insight has shattered all my prejudices and misunderstandings and now I'm intrigued by the closed guard once again! Thank you!

Some comments from a chess player: closed guard, mount, etc. don't refer to single positions but to a range of positions each. The position when top position has hands on the floor is not the same as the position with top position postured up. One favours bottom a lot more than the other. In chess, good players often think about how to improve their position, especially if there's not a convincing shot that can immediately swing the game decisively, and even in positions where the opponent is in disadvantage, they are sometimes solid which means the side with advantage needs to improve their own position more before attempting any direct attacks Moreover, closed guard is an upside-down mount. Bottom position has gotten past top position's legs. The scoring system considers it neutral, but the legs are stronger so why shouldn't it be considered advantageous for lower position? MMA considers guard neutral because of strikes, so if we take strikes out then bottom position should be considered advantageous.

Over all, very good information and breakdown. A little oversimplified but great concepts for a beginner. The butterfly guard or deep half guard, for example, do not fit any of the patterns described in terms top/bottom dominance. It's more about balance, center of gravity, angles and leverage. You can and should attack from a defensive position if your opponent makes a mistake and give you the opportunity. I.e. opponent has taken your back and crosses his feet.

Love the content. Professors Danaher and Faria are incredible. The video and audio, however, are sub-par, with the video looking like it was shot by a drunk and the audio has the mat slaps 10x louder than Professor Danaher’s voice. NYC has some of the greatest videographers and recording engineers outside of L.A. Surely some of them study jiu jitsu and would be willing to offer their expertise in exchange for discounted tuition or private lessons.

Awesome, training as much as I can as a white belt, studying through the day with your videos, I'm working alot on defense, escapes as i end up in those all the time (seeing some major progress every day) another video really helped with that. Am able to escape past some 3 stripe blue belts with weight and height advantage, while they are in mount, is a big W for me, my goal is to have much better success rate with most every blue belt in my gym with escapes, the fact I was able to escape from this position with a more skilled and advantageous opponent really was progress. Not perfect but getting there. I see if I focus on my defense and escapes and make that solid, and at the same time focus on making my guard harder to pass so I don't end up in that situation as much (but I will). Then trying to work from getting good at escapes to half guard, then guard. and eventually will focus on guard submissions and more sweeps (even tho we train that anyway at my gym anyways). I'm slowly making my way to be able to actually defend my self in jujitsu. Some of the concepts you talk about and the weight distributation, breaking down posture are all curtail things I need to understand if I'm ever going to improve. THANK YOU!
