I live in Iceland and I've only been abroad once and that was to the UK and I didn't see much because I went straight from Heathrow to Cardiff (It was a youth project). By watching your videos I realized that the world is much more beautiful and diverse than I ever would have thought.

Spettacolare, il video mostra quanto di piu' bello la natura può mostrarci. per uno come me che vive in un posto di mare, una cosa del genere può vederla di rado. Bravissimo!!!!!!

I took this trip and it was a really fun day. Up and over to Italy for a delightful lunch then back on the train to Switzerland. You might expect the most spectacular feature of this train ride would be the spirals and loops you do through blasted out tunnels in the mountains. The only thing is, while you are in a tunnel all you see is that the lights go out. For me, the best thing other than the obvious natural beauty was watching the architecture change from peaks and spires to square towers and more Italianesque buildings. The next day I took the Glacier Express and Bernina Express, I thought was more interesting, but when you are in Switzerland you need to do them all if you can.

So remember freezing at piz Bernina in June! We had taken trains connecting at two separate points (Samedan was one) from Davos, having missed the scenic express and wishing to make the journey to see the route. Not having time enough to go down to Italy - we were on a weekend drive from Germany - we went only up to Piz Bernina, got off to wait for the return train, and I for one was reminded of my first Xmas in Boston '80, bones turned to water memory of an hour at the bus stop in -5F with wind chill -40F, albeit at Piz Bernina the actual temperature was warmer than that, it was far more wind chill. To my embarrassment I couldn't really stay outside the station to enjoy the beauty and walk about, and went in to warm up. Wish we had tried it again, but the discrepancy between car lease and travel sticker meant it was not to be until next new year and then there were too many places to see anyway.

Very nice landscape. The Swiss have looked after their country. The Bruscia Viaduct and the Landwasser Viaduct art are things an artist would marvel at.

@hoosiertim Thanks for your video! I will go on the Bernina Express this very week myself! :) But, more exact than "the steepest train that runs in Switzerland", it is the steepest train that runs merely on contact, i.e. without any cables or gears (which you state yourself in later on in your description). Either way, great video, thanks for posting!

It is amazing to me that we can glide along, looking out at the land scape in the comfort of our machines when not so long ago, few people ever saw such sights and all to often, they paid a heavy price for it. It has become so common place, that we forget what's it's really like out there just beyond that pane of glass that separates us from the elements.

I know I would have been happier as a caveman; prerhistorians have calculated that early cave dwellers had more free time than we have today. And only in the modern age would someone such as yourself experience ontological anxiety. The dilemma of not knowing what is beyond the superficial scenery is awe inspiring, but you could get off the train and go see for yourself. Scenery is great. I'm considering riding trains all over the world for the rest of my life.

I have been on this rout. The scenery is spectacular, but I would advise you not to get the actual Bernina Express, but to get the normal train. It's much quieter, cheaper and you can open the windows for photos, which you can't do on the panoramic carriages. Whenever we went pass one of the express trains, we would see people hanging out of the windows of the toilets taking pictures. 'Twas hilarious
@AndreiTupolev12 жыл бұрын
That's why I much prefer the older trains where you can open the windows and you don't have people talking at you all the time.

Depending on the type of train. There are regular ones, with no reservation and Bernina Express with wider windows and more commentaries about the points of interest, where reservation (14 Fr) is needed. I just rode these trains last saturday, almost empty at this time of the year (not in winter, not in summer), a dream came true for trains & Alps lovers.

Slight confusion here - if Ospizio Bernina is the highest train station in Switzerland, how does Jungfraujoch qualify for "Top of Europe"?
@hoosiertim10 жыл бұрын
As I understand it, Ospizio is the highest rail mountain pass in Europe. Jungfraujoch is the highest station in Europe.
