The work was a 1955 commission by the Koussevitzky Foundation for first performance by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Charles Munch. Despite the fact that he was no longer Music Director of the orchestra, Munch stil wanted to introduce the work. He had previously done the American premiere of Bernstein's Serenade. Then LB asked to conduct the world premiere in Israel - the parties went along with that. This info is for those wondering why Munch did the American premiere and not Bernstein. Shortly after, Bernstein conducted the New York premiere and the Columbia record.

grande interpretazione, ricca di tensione espressiva e dove non si rinuncia all'eloquio per arrivare al nucleo fondativo della partitura

Munchの声が、フィナーレで聞こえますね。
