Guts asks Goto how he decided to become a Blacksmith. I have always though this was a great scene and is my favorite in the Berserk anime.
PS there is a new Berserk project underway. I cant wait :)
*I do not own Berserk, I compiled this video is to promote a fantastic anime and manga and get you all excite about the new Berserk project.*

I got my friend into berserk and I told him about gore and all that but told him in the manga it’s not about that Like that’s not the main point of berserk like yeah they got some fucked up shit and a lot of death and sorrow but the main point was struggle and humanity A human can only go so far yet desire so much and the struggle to find yourself and care for other and achieve dreams is limited but also endless It’s about how guys as a man loves in his own world filled by hate and sadness He struggles not because he has to but because he’s human and doesn’t want to die He fights his battles within a real battle or himself We seen guys change three times (kinda 4) in the whole manga From the correct order as a kid he feared and stayed quite and abused lead to him being older only knowing killing and caring for himself and surviving to growing older and loving people and making friends To having everything ruined and losing himself to anger and the sadness inside him as he ages and find a new purpose (casca his lover) to suppress his anger and rage into a more mature guts He went from a kid to a killer to a human being into a monster and now a more calm storm within He has experienced so many horrifying stuff in his life he can’t help but struggle and try to find peace in himself Guys has done some bad stuff but that Doesn’t make him evil and he’s done some good but doesn’t mean he’s good Murcia made this manga about life and death and the struggles of one who can only see his way Berserk has so many important stuff to build character that there’s no way it’s not more than just gorefest and the darkness of humanity Guys changing and the people that surrounded him link to this People find their dreams and try to reach them other godly beings being so powerful to the point that they are gods Religions and everything Demons and angels Good from evil they never really point a finger at who’s evil let’s take guts (messed up past all friends killed and girl raped by his best friend) he uses children as bait and killed people who got in his way from an outside perspective he’s evil But from guts view he’s trying to achieve revenge and in order to do that he needs to do what he has to do even if it means leaving a village to burn and rot Guts gave up on his goal and found a new one he reached it but along the way he also ruined lives of others It doesn’t matter where he’ll end up because he struggles the entire way he’s been fighting fate his whole life and in the very end guts will end up in hell Guts needs to find his peace and enjoyment and once he does I believe guts will die happy while he fades into nothing once he does die in hell and enter that eternal void of consciousness to become nothing but a memory We all know guys is going to die if we see it or not but he’s still going along the way for what idk Muir’s has to surprise us again Also sorry for rant might delete idk I was just talking about berserk and stuff I didn’t explain everything because too much to cover this is just some stuff and theories I cane up with and some stuff from the manga and how’s it’s been going You got Griffith The inner beats of guts Skullknight Magic/faith Gods/godhand Destiny/fate Evil vs good All those to take references and more than just *guts and blood*

I do think there's wisdom in a slightly comedic/sweet moment, but I see it more as Erika following her predetermined path. When we're kids, we think of the adult world as this fantastic and exciting future. But most people get bogged down in their trade, career, or job as the mundanity sets in. Her naivete is dramatic irony not only to the viewer, but also to Guts and Goto. But there is a simple truth there: do what you love, and you don't work a day in your life.

Out of all the intensity, madness, and passion in this series, this particular moment was my favorite. Godot is just like Guts, a man who cannot tell if his trade called to him or he grew into it, but took it and lived. Those fatherly moments where he would shelter Guts and fix his sword, the respect that Guts showed him, all incredibly moving. This whole series has been a modern Conan with a passion unseen since Howard put ink to paper. Thank you for the story, Miura-san.

Guts: My destiny My dream Does this sword embody my dream? Is this reality? It has always been at my side Through pain I could hardly endure Yes, this is part of me Whenever I met death, my sword was with me as I moved past it For all the places that I have seen, and people I can never forget, I felt everything through the tip of my sword. This sword is the proof that I ever lived. Guts: Godo, how did you decide to become a blacksmith? Godo: Family trade. Guts: Do you like it? Godo: I don’t know. Guts: You don’t know? Godo: I’ve been gripping this thing since before I could even walk. I didn’t choose this; this is who I am. I just strike it, I don’t think. I spent my youth desperate to forge a better sword, become a more skilled smith. Before I knew it, I was old. I don’t even know what the HELL I strike the iron for… But there is still one thing I like about it: the Sparks. I like seeing sparks; breathtaking. Life. Bursting before my eyes for just a moment… my life. Guts: Sparks. The light borne in the clash when two swords meet. They serve me as well. Throughout my life, the moments and people that have defined me, they have all been illuminated by sparks.

Eh.. not trying to be smartass but Myth of Sisyphus isn't about predestination that is Calvinism. Everything is pointless when we are going to die anyway.

Goto and guts are very similar, so similar that they led the same life under different context. Guts on battlefield, Goto with blacksmithing. The were born into something that is not what they do but a way of life, that is who they are. Guts with his sword and Goto with his flame, seeing life born and ended in sparks. Guts may not have a happy ending but he will live and die by the very sparks he makes, through those sparks he understands life. Another way to look at is Guts lives by those sparks, that is his life. Other use those sparks to create a flame that is there dreams.

@@rax2162 I knowingly state upfront, that I am ignorant of enough source material that I have no right to claim knowledge about "Berserk", but the theme I am fairly familiar with, and In my humble opinion, the older you get, the more "life" you see... you see there are no happy "endings"... there are sparks, and decay. They may be "preferred" ways for the sparks to die out... but die out they do, and you, the person, never really "get" the "ending" in life... just one day, happens to be your last. It's very akin to the idea that, it's not the destination, it's the journey. And in life, again in my humble opinion, there are no destinations. So to have a "happily ever ending" to a story that conveys *reality* feels off, feels well "fantastical" because no one ever gets it. I don't think the fans want guts to have bad ending or a tough time... but a *real* and good spark to fade off on, which given his style of sparks... might not be what a "normal" person would see as a "good ending".

This scene is a beautiful critique on the modern day "cult" of following your passion and making it your business. Most characters is Berserk are sailors on a ship whose path they don't know, but they find their moments of peace and joy, along with pain and grief times manifold. But they still hang tight, accept their fate yet still fight for a better future. It s a philosophy that will help us well. A lot of what happens in our life is completely out of our control. Our place of birth, our socioeconomic status, the friends and lovers(and enemies) we meet, our profession, how we die etc. There'll be lots of pain and moments of joy in between that might make it worth it. What we can control though, we must. Your life is like a train station- you'll miss some trains and that's ok. There are others you can catch.

Whenever I think about the relationship between Guts and Godo I think about how Godo was in a sense Gut's true father. Even though they weren't related by blood he always had an open door, an open ear and the best advice he could muster for Guts and in return Guts always took his words to heart. Taking care of Casca, taking in Rickert, he lent a lot of help to Guts and all he wanted for him was to see the young man find his direction. He was a good guy and this was a powerful and poetic scene, one of Berserk's moist poignant "speeches" and that's saying a lot. Between that and Gut's inner monologues here it really shows off Miura's strength as a writer as well as an artist. Man, do I miss him.

When I first saw this scene I felt fear. A fear that I’ve never felt before a fear that chilled me to my bones. Godo the blacksmith has forever known the hammer. Before he could walk he struck when he was a child he struck when he was a teenager he struck when he was a man he struck. All he has known is the forge it has been so long with him it has become him. He’s life has centered around the forge. He’s environment he’s family he’s self has all been focused on the forge. He knows nothing else but the forge. No other ambitions or goals but the forge. It was the most natural thing to him. Now he is a old man living alone with he’s daughter. Still he is striking. When he reflects back on why he is still striking he doesn’t know but what he does know is that he still finds a beauty in it. The sparks. The sparks are a resemblance of life. That beauty is enough to keep him going even if it is just enough. That lifelong commitment to one single thing is scary it scares me because it’s a one way ticket. Would I be fulfilled to commit myself lifelong to one craft before I knew anything else? Will I be better off with another craft? Would it still be possible for me to find a passion I seek even when I an old man? Is this craft (or purpose) enough for me? What if that answer is no? Then what? Have I lived my life doing something that I was truly not invested in? Doesn’t it really matter at that point? If I doing something for so long do I eventually grow to find an enjoyment in it? The uncertainty and potential dread wondering if you have limited your own potential. I think is worse than death. That dread is something I try to avoid entirely but the opposite dilemma can also occur too. Being so versatile that you don’t really know what you want to truly do. Life seems so simple yet complicated at the same time we just wish to find a sense of peace in it. Maybe the key is balance.

We all know, (or maybe ARE) someone who is in a job they just feel is drudgery personified, and find it difficult to find the will to keep on the daily grind, so it's kind of inspiring when he says "there's one thing I like, it's the sparks." Just being able to find one thing he enjoys helped him go on all those years. Not that it made it all worth it entirely, but it shows that no matter how aweful a job is, there's always SOMETHING you can hold on to and enjoy about it.

I've worked quite a few years serving at restaurants. It's a tough and thankless job, with lots of physical and mental stress. But even on the shittiest day, the genuine smile of the customers when you bring them their food and wish them a happy meal...it does warm my heart and can keep me going for a long time.

What I saw: "Lol he sucks at cutting logs falling from the sky" What an actual fan of the show saw: "The failing to cut all of the logs represents Guts's inability to finding his purpose in this world, as not all of his problems can be solved by swinging his sword around, even if that is all he knows. He cannot proceed further in life until he finds another path in life.

Guts really does represent all of us that feeling of searching for a purpose. I owe a lot to miura bezerk has become my bible. I owe miura my life I wanted to die and than I stumbled across this story I read it and I realised I was wrong for giving up on myself and for not having a dream. I can’t thank miura enough so instead I’ll never give up on myself and I will do my best to bring joy to those around me. RIP I will not forget ur what you taught me.

This scene reminds me of writer Charles Bukowski. He had a really shitty and poor life and mostly viewed life through a pessimistic lens (however there's a bit of optimism and grittiness in his work). He had many reasons to quit or kill himself. But he kept on living and writing, because writing was all he knew, it was a way of expressing himself, and he was good at it. He wasn't really writing for any reason or for anybody, he did it because it was his nature.

godos speech (in my opinion) was about how even though he didn't find fulfillment or purpose in his life still enjoyed the sparks as in it was his life he saw in those sparks those fleeting moments of brief short light and he loved it. not necessarily blacksmithing in general and guts can relate very similarly because he's been in countless wars and fights and triumphs and losses yet he never enjoyed it, or truly felt defeated, he loved to swing his sword and that was it, except for guts it's different because he still has a chance to seek more then what he'd been doing up till then so godo's words drives him to go out and actually fucking do something about casca and griffith, even if guts was never destined for greatness or in the flow of causality (not yet) he still chooses to go on and that's why guts is the best fucking anime character and i say that as a fact GUTS WILL ALWAYS STRUGGLE NO MATTER WHAT

You got it right straight at the begining Its all about giving your own life meaning and purpose I will use real life here: Most people in this world reach adulthood and start working and the only thing they do with the money they earn is buy basic things like food, house and trivial things but they dont think about the reasons why they work and what they want about their life thats why most people are like the Band of the Hawk kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn27gpaDetmie9k People like Guts try to find meaning and purpose for everything they do, thats why when Guts comes back he knows that he will only fight for himself "I've made up my mind. I'll never entrust my sword to another again. I'll never hang from someone else's dream. From now on... every battle will be my own." Which is kind of sad because he now fights because of Griffith

Goto's speech kinda reminds of people just going through the motions their entire lives life with no real puprose doing the same empty activities day after day, with the promotion at work being their only objective, ultimately they don't even know what they're supposed to do or who they're supposed to be and before they know it they're old.

Evil Ryu i think that's exactly why people love berserk and then some! if what you said at first is mostly true, the new berserk animes would still be liked more convincingly, what makes berserk the original anime and the mangas so good is it's setting, it's art and atmosphere, the personalities, plot, and the brutal and raw fightings...

I like it because it's aimed at those of us going through life changes post-high school through to whenever. I enjoyed the dark fantasy elements in the anime. The manga has it going for three arcs, then it changes again. I appreciate the author making Guts experience harsh realities to then change as a human being. He is learning to enjoy having company and a lover in his life. Whether he revisits his revenge plot is unknown. The manga definitely needed a break from the hack and slash to get its mojo back.

People love Berserk due to its characters, story, philosophical interests, etc. If as many people watched it or read it for just the demon combat, it would just be simplistic like Attack on Titan, which I can not stand that show and it would more than likely be more main stream in popularity.

It's a very Zen Buddhist approach when he says "I just strike the iron, i don't think." So many people live in the past or future and they forget to actually live in the present moment. Life, love, and meaning can only be fully appreciated in the moment, which is as brilliant and as fleeting as a spark.
