Something to keep in mind is that knowing the golden age arc is still only knowing such a small slice of the story. For reference, it's 11 volumes long. The entire series is at 42 and counting. I think Golden Age is "the one" everyone knows simply because of the anime adaptation being very good and prolific. The quality and memorability of the story beyond it is not worse by any means. If anything, its more compelling due to it having much more established driving forces from the events that transpire in the Golden Age. It should also be said that the anime adaptation is not completely faithful to the source material. There is a lot missing from the anime, and a lot of the events are also just better conveyed in the manga. It's a great show and adaptation, but it is by no means a replacement for the original arc or Miura's paneling/art. Guts as a protagonist without the spoiler context is a tough sell at the beginning, but I think Miura succeeds in conveying his troubled history and trauma pretty well through the dialog and expression work. He says some pretty hateful, arrogant, and ignorant things in these early chapters, but you can still feel the soul behind the surface even without knowing "the history". Black Swordsman feels like a pilot episode, but it contains some pretty impactful experiences; Its grown on me over time even though I personally find it to the be the worst part of the series. Scenes like the wagon ride with the priest and the girl have remained ingrained in my head for years. It's not the most complex awe-inspiring storytelling, but it is extremely effective. Looking forward to rereading along with you.
