@@Joe.D.Sheppard -- I would say that he's good at recording what the other person is saying, but I do think listening is something else entirely. Good listeners, IMO, are those who can pay complete attention to another person while they're speaking without the need to interrupt. Rick isn't so great at this, being that he's always chomping at the bit to get a word (or joke) in edgewise. Dialogue is very competitive for him, you can tell, which can benefit the podcast when he has on someone with a similar sense of humor or desire to entertain, but when he has on someone truly thoughtful or sincere it rarely ends well.

Listening at around the 1:40:00 mark and loving the discussion (about what's acceptable to share on a podcast and what is not). In terms of what I believe is acceptable, though, I would qualify this two different ways; 1: If something creates more problems by being kept private than it would by addressing it, even publicly, then it's fair game to share on a podcast. 2: If you're truly unsure as to whether or not you're betraying a person's confidence by sharing something, even if it seems harmless, just apply the Golden Rule. If there are stories involving yourself that you'd be upset with another person sharing publicly then you should probably extend the same courtesy to others. That is, of course, unless the first rule applies (about privacy causing more problems than exposure). And as an aside, to Bert's point about being the type to just take, take, take until you burst versus being the type who comfortably expresses their grievances; I actually disagree that it's better to be the latter. I think those, for the most part, who withstand a great deal before unleashing are actually only doing so out of true politeness. I don't think it's the result of cowardice more than it is not wanting to upset anyone without real cause. In a world full of people with every kind of social/political difference, you're bound to encounter attitudes and behaviors you don't like. It's the person who can handle the majority of those things in silence that does the greatest good, IMO, because none of us want to be corrected and judged all day long. The real problem, and responsibility, lies on the person with no capacity to reform themselves. Meaning, I guess, that those who have such little regard for another person's boundaries that they will violate repeatedly until that person explodes -- those people get what they deserve. There's a simple quote I heard many years ago which I love; "The burnt hand learns the quickest". You can tell a child, for example, one hundred times over to not touch the top of the oven while it's on because it might burn their hand, but at the end of the day it's the one time they actually touch it that they never need to be told again. That might sound cruel, which is not how I intend it, but applying that to life is to just say that once you've reached your limit, perhaps what comes out of that might be just what the other person needs to hear.
