When you said that the chicken momo filling needed a little spice I instantly realised where that was coming from. The momo you had back in India weren't authentic nepali momo but more of an Indian version where they use a little more spice. If you get momo in Nepal or Sikkim or Darjeeling they will have little to no spice but quite a lot of ginger which is I believe a more authentic Nepalese momo. We nepali people like to savour the simple flavour of the meat the most and the dip and jhol is what has most of the spice. And yes we do eat around 20-30 of them in one seating. 😭

I agree with the momos being the best dumpling out there statement... When I was in Nepal I couldn't get enough of them. Nepalese people had the BEST sauces to go with them, I distinctly remember that. My partner and I ended up looking for a cooking class to know how they make them... SO GOOD!!! The spices and everything they use are just heavenly. If anyone goes to Kathmandu, go have veg momos at White House Kitchen. AMAZING

9:55 There's something about momo, From Nepal's mountains and valleys below, A humble dumpling that steals the show, With its aroma, flavor, and texture to glow. A filling of meat or veggies inside, Wrapped in dough so delicate and light, Steamed or fried, the choice is yours to decide, A taste of Nepal, an exquisite delight. It's more than just a meal, it's a culture's pride, A symbol of hospitality, served far and wide, From family gatherings to streetside vendors' stride, Momo brings people together, side by side. The fragrance of momo, a sweet perfume, Aromas of spices, and herbs in full bloom, A bite of momo, and my heart starts to zoom, With satisfaction and pleasure, no need for a room. Oh, momo, you are more than just a dish, A connection to Nepal, a cultural wish, To share your flavors, with every single wish, A divine experience, a moment to relish. So let's celebrate momo, this Nepali treasure, A dish that unites, beyond any measure, A culinary masterpiece, with infinite pleasure, Momo, the king of dumplings, beyond all measure.

Thank you Beryl for featuring my submission! :) Loved watching you try nepalese food. The grilled tandoori meat with samaybaji is called "Chhoila" and the falafel type of thing is "Bara- a pancake made out of lentils". I think the chatamari you got had a thick base, which normally is not the case. There's much more to nepalese cuisine. i hope you will try it in the future as well! Much love from Nepal!

Remembering my trip to Nepal and all the lovely people there - I don't think I've ever been to a place where the people are just so genuinely sweet and generous ❤️ - And yes, the portion sizes are like that, and not only for guests - my nepali friends always joke about serving (and eating without the smallest shred of guilt) a Himalaya of rice and dal. They can never believe when I capitulate after about a third of what is heaped on my plate 😄

I'm surprised (in a good way) that Newar cuisine features so prominently in this sampling of Nepali foods. It confuses me that chatamari would be a main dish while samay baji would be an appetizer - those should definitely be switched! Samay baji is a composed meal, in much the same way that a Thali is. The thing in the middle is a lentil fritter/cake, called wo in Newari and bara/vada in many languages in Nepal/India. Chatamari is more of a snack or small meal, and is often cut into pieces and shared. If your chatamari was doughy, it wasn't properly made. It should be crisp on one side and tender on the other, like an utthapam. Chyang, like momo, is of Tibetan origin. Momo has a longer history in Nepal, as it was brought back by Newar traders. The way you eat dozens of momo is that you gather with family and eat it while you make it. The littlest hands roll the dough into balls while experienced matriarchs roll them out into wrappers. Someone is in charge of depositing the exact amount of filling and everyone else pitches in to pleat them shut. You pop momo straight off the steamer into your mouth, while continuing to make more. You spend the whole evening this way, chatting, drinking, eating and making more and more momo. Like Sukuti, the best momo filling is buff (water buffalo meat). It's not really available outside of Nepal, so I hope one day you're able to travel and try it.

There's a Nepalese restaurant in my city which does some of the best curry I have ever eaten, but I haven't been able to narrow down the kind of recipe they use for my favourite one - it's labelled as "Jomsom" on the menu, but based on my research, it's the region their chef is from, rather than a specifically defined style.

This whole video I was like,"No Beryl, everything you ordered is one serving of food and we eat it in one sitting. Alone. Especially the samay baji set in the beginning.(Yes, we eat it all. plus they come around to add more)" 😭 Also, about the 30 momos thing. We usually have the whole family involved while making them, so we eat while we make more. You tend to lose count of how many you ate while making more. 😂

I've had momo's in India and Nepal and agree with several of the comments below about the spice level being amped up in India and found the Nepali ones to have a more subtle fragrance to them. Either way, you can't go wrong with a Momo!

I *LOVE* momos and so to thank you for your video I have actually written you a poem.... In the heart of Nepal, where mountains stand tall, A culinary delight, beckons one and all. A morsel of heaven, wrapped in dough so thin, The story of momo, I shall now begin. With nimble hands and a craftsman's grace, The Nepalese people mold its tender embrace. A pocket of dough, folded with care, Hides treasures within, a secret affair. Steamed to perfection, or fried till it's gold, The momo's allure, a tale to be told. A bite to savor, the taste buds to please, For inside lies a fusion, that brings taste buds to their knees. A symphony of flavors, a dance of delight, The spiced meat and herbs, embraced in moonlight. Each morsel a whisper, of Nepalese lore, A culinary journey, one cannot ignore. With dipping sauces, tangy and sweet, The momo experience, truly complete. A taste of Nepal, a gift from above, Momo dumplings, a symbol of love. And as we part ways, a Haiku I bestow, To honor the momo, with love and gusto: Nepal's warm embrace, Momo whispers secrets, taste, Mountains in each bite.

I love dumplings. We have a type of dumpling in Australia called the 'Dim Sim'... (not Dim Sum)... It is a Chinese Australian invention, usually made with beef or lamb but sometimes pork and cabbage, white pepper, chinese 5 spice, sesame oil, garlic and soy sauce. I'm not sure if these are available internationally but the most famous dim sims are 'South Melbourne market dim sims'... you can buy them frozen in the supermarket here but they're an actual takeaway franchise from Melbourne Australia.

Saw you using that garden raddish on some. Here is a nive little side dish, made from them. Finely sliced, just the way you used it. Mix it with a mixture of salt, sugar and mustard. After 15 to 20min, salt and sugar will kave drawn moisture from the raddish to create a vinaigrette. The sugar will balance the harsh edge from the raddish. You might wanna add chopped italian parsley . Greetings from the far north of Germany!

Nepalese cuisine is awesome! Chatamari and Samay Baji are so loved in Nepal, as well as Wo. Chatamari is a perfect dish for a filling meal plus it's gluten free, has protein and is super healthy AND you can have it for any meal of day breakfast lunch or dinner. Chatamari should be just slightly thicker than a crepe and not too thick, and it comes in various types. Traditionally you have egg chatamari or Buff Chatamari (minced buffalo with mild seasonings). You can definitely have it with sauces if you want. If you're vegetarian of course experiment with vegetables to your liking. Newari Jhol momo is soooo good I love the flavour of this dish, it's mild and has fragrant taste of sesame, sichuan peppercorn, and hog plum. Jhol momo is glorious. Lastly, I wish you could try the authentic Nepalese Buff momo Beryl! Chicken momo is great but Buff is even greater. Closest thing you could substitute if Buff isn't available where you live is Beef. Now I'm off to go make some Chatamari because watching this video made me crave it so much!

ITS MOMO NOT MOMOS. You don't say pizzas, its pizza, whether its a slice or multiple slices, its always "x number of pizza slices". The same goes for momo, whether its a piece, multiple pieces, a plate, half plate or multiple plates. Its always momo. You could say "x plates of momo" but never "momos".

I find it kind of ironic- I am from the US but live in a village in Nepal, about 9 miles from the border of Tibet. As I watch you, in the US, eating Nepali food, I am here in Nepal eating Shepherd's pie which I just made in the pressure cooker. But I do have a side of chiura (beaten rice) on the side!
