13 u game, opposition catcher take a low ball, catches it, then moves it up, and umpire calls ball. The catcher asks the umpire where that missed. The umpire says politely "what do you think? You moved the ball up, so you thought it was low and I agree with you". I loved that umpire.

I tell catchers just stick the pitch and you'll get more calls especially borderline calls. When you pull pitches that tells me you think it was a ball and so I will also call it a ball. I tell them that we need to work together and that I WANT to call strikes.

Agree, but good catching also looks good to the umpire. Check out the video on this channel of the varsity catcher doing this. If you ever umpire behind someone that good, it's refreshing, amazing and very helpful. Too bad most catchers aren't good at receiving! 😢

Damn not only good frame but that's one hell of an athletic knee. My old ass cant be bothered hopping around like that 😂

for sure... his flexibility and body positioning were the stand outs for me, and they're both also a key aspect of his ability to frame so smoothly...

The kid isn't bad. He gets the middle and high framing pretty decent. The low pitches he's going down with the glove to get the ball and not receiving going up. That's a lot of expectation for a 10u player anyways.

I can do that too, just lots of practice. Tips: catch it while you’re dragging it.

anyone know what's going on with this channel? It's always been one of my favorites for youth baseball information, and now it seems to be no more.

As an umpire, framing makes my strike zone tighter. Literally, the catcher is lying to me on every single pitch and I don't like lying or liars.

if you have to "frame" it its not a strike

That's my philosophy as an umpire. Framing is just telling me two things: (1) you thought it was a ball, so you tried to move it and (2) you are OK with lying to me about where the ball crossed the plate. I'll agree with the catcher on point (1) and be wary of the catcher for the rest of the game, as I am with all dishonest people.

FYI, Framing is useless as the umpire has made the decision of ball or strike before it is caught.

Any umpire who makes up his mind before the ball is caught is a bad umpire. No umpire school on the planet teaches that. You're a dumpster fire.
@MH-Tesla6 ай бұрын
Umpires are taught to wait for the pitch to complete. Then decide. Then verbalize. A good catcher isn't trying to fool the umpire. He's making sure his pitcher gets the strikes he throws called strikes. Bad catchers lose strikes. And if a good catcher does get a ball called a strike... Good for him, but that's not the purpose of presenting the pitch correctly.

Think he was coached in that? Or he just somehow knows?
@aussiesurfer80510 ай бұрын
coached for sure --- the technique is not a simple one, and requires a lot of refinement and time to get it as smooth as that young fella. His footwork, flexibility and body positing all played an important part tool ... No doubt he's probably got some natural ability, and would have watched a lot of pro catchers modelling it I'm sure, but to put it all together like that he's a good listener and a hard worker who has been coached well...

Some of them were nice and others were still really obvious. Great for a 10-year-old though.

A bunch of word salad baloney to explain a stupid rule. Why then can a batter ball be caught bare handed by a position player and it is an out. That ball does not have to touch the glove first. It just goes against common sense.
