This is such a fantastic channel. Practical common sense advice and clear guidance on how to access the various resources and get the most from the experience. Thank you. I have just begun my journey having recently turned 60 and retired. This is one of my projects that will keep me busy. Already I'm discovered so much "new" information. I'm finding the process stimulating fascinating engrossing and I must admit- emotional on more than one occasion. Having discovered 2 young men who were killed in the First World War who were never spoken of by the family has revealed just how painful that catastrophic conflict was for families- too traumatised to talk of the loved ones they lost. The family have proudly reclaimed "our boys" and for the first time we will commemorate their sacrifice this November 11th and Remembrance Sunday.

Family Search is better than My Heritage in my experience. The FS iphone app is really good and easy to use as well. My Heritage has some sparkle to it and a good consistency checker but I rarely find unique records there. I’m sure it is good for Europe but not US research at least in my use. I get a free version of it so cost is not an issue but FS is free with a ton of resources. Unindexed probate and court records have been a goldmine there. I flip from Ancestry to FS and use them both equally. Love the fan chart. Great channel and tips!

I love your channel. I'm learning to research my East European ancestors and, I have to say, other than for Family Search, I'm not finding particularly strong search algorithms for the many, many spelling variants of names originally written in Slavic languages (often in Cyrillic) ir Hungarian. Also, the search algorithms don't always match up the many, many changes in the names of locations as they got jostled around among various empires and countries. Anything you could provide on working with existing search resource for those of us of East European ancestry would be greatly appreciated.

I do not disagree, and everything cannot be crammed into one video. Just want to point out that for me, the big deal with Find My Past is you search within a radius you set of 0, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 miles of the locality you specify. This is huge when foot and horse were the common mode of transport. They also have hints if you upload or enter your tree.

Hi, Connie. I’m fairly new to your channel, and loving what I’m learning. I was wondering if there comes a time when stepping away from the computer for family searching may be necessary. It never hurts to step away for a little while. Sometimes you can go work on a different line and come back to it a few months later and suddenly discover things that you hadn’t noticed before. Hi David. I'm an amateur genealogist of 30+ years and found many times that walking away to do hands on research really helped. I couldn't find a date of death or maiden name for a cousin that married into my mother's family in the 1840's, but her husband and children were all buried in the same cemetery in southern Ohio. We went to Washington County, found her in an unphotographed grave. It had her DoD, maiden name, confirmed to whom she was married and 2 of her unknown infants births/deaths that were not recorded anywhere. Required record recordings were often ignored in rural areas in that era. We walked the cemetery and found several other possible relatives that provided information to later be included in my tree. A very productive day spent with my wife and it also got her interested in my hobby. One tip, if you have any senior relatives living, set up interviews and pick their brains!

Now, what MyHeritage should add with the Autocluster tool is, assign the color dot to the match in your list. So red dot to all the red matches, orange to the orange and so on. Also, if you didn't know, the Autocluster report displays your notes. So if you add notes in Ancestry, but not MyHeritage, get cracking adding notes to your MyHeritage matches and then run the Autocluster. When you convert it to a report it'll show your notes.

Does anyone know how to get over a wall? My paternal 3rd great grandfather changed the family name sometime after 1847 when him, his wife and daughter landed in Baltimore. I'll have to do it next week on my days off though as I only just found out a brief glance by looking at a cousins DNA on ancestry and then looking at someone else's and googling the de Clifford name. The only thing is I don't really like the Norman's, I'm into Anglo Saxon and Vikings.

@@GenealogyTV the relationship to the de Clifford and the dukes of Normandy are completely incorrect. I believe all platforms hide living people from others. So while you can see yourself in your tree, others can't. If a persons profile has no death information or is still marked as living, the platform will typically show the information after 100 to 120 years (depending on the platform). So if I went to your tree, I could not see you. However, I might be able to drill into your profile (say on Ancestry) to see your user name and when you last signed on. I hope that helps. Thanks for subscribing... and commenting. Good question.

However, a pro-level (though still hobbyist) genealogy-buff cousin said that no, the information was correct. This placed the mother as 2nd cousin once removed to HER OWN CHILD! Very strange! WHAT are 'centimorgans"??!! Yes, Ancestry has a ton of records, but their so-called "filters" don't work. It is extremely annoying to filter for or against some parameter, only to have it show up anyway, in spades! A waste of time! I can never make the card catalog work for me. It always gives me either zero results or irrelevant ones.

I found out through DNA that one of my sisters does not share my father. She didn't know that. She had copied my tree. Her daughter copied my tree including all my father info. So that really screws up the thru lines and makes it a useless tool for me. I just block it.

They likely have documents they left behind. Like census records, death records, birth records, marriage records, you can also try DNA.

3 ideas. Transcribe it the best you can as you see it... then use Google Translate one sentence at a time to help determine what it says. Also, search on Facebook for groups that have German ancestry and ask if anyone can translate. Also go to WikiTree and look for a mentor for German ancestry. They likely can help you.

Anybody out there I am searching for my ancestor in Mexico-Veracruz. 1830 to 1880. He hade a business with Hargous, his name Emil Voss born in Wandsbek 1802 then Danish. Give me some input!!

I found 19 record sets for Veracruz Mexico by searching the card catalog for that location. Sort by record count and search each record set (that makes sense) for your ancestors. Some of these are in Spanish. www.ancestry.com/search/collections/catalog/?sort=record-count&location=963431_3255

I'm not sure what that means, but okay. I like to approach those brick walls carefully... examine the details and find the cracks in the wall... then a little more targeted research and BOOM.. the brick wall comes tumbling down. :)

Would you conclude we are all related on this planet? I have.
@GenealogyTV3 жыл бұрын
Yes... I believe we are... however, is there a paper trail for connecting everyone... I doubt it.
@patricioungaro33823 жыл бұрын
But even in the case that we are all related, the common ancestors would be found far before the first cave paintings 45k years ago, so forget about finding documentation. Here in Belgium alone you have to go over 1200 years back to find a common ancestor to most Belgians, and at least 3-4 times that for a common ancestor to half of Europe. In genealogy terms, 200 years is nothing.

That's why I do not subscribe nor do I ask questions of thes e people. This site is another scammer, they want your money.

Two of those sites are totally for free. All other sites have free options. All records that are produced by the government, are free no matter what your subscription status is. That would be things like US census records. Just so you know.
