Oh man, that would be a lot of subwoofers and the key to this channel is i have to be personally interested and curious in the item and while those all interest me in some way having all of them around the same time would be a logistical nightmare. Based on what I've heard so far i can say the SE8 is more musical than the SE12 so i would pick those based on music vs theater use. The ASW608 i've gone over in great lengths so we know where that stands but i havn't heard the 1000 series from SVS nor the HT1003 from REL and maybe i will in the future but I don't think I'd do a 3-way or 5-way video on all those subs. The $500 category and below is home to many compromises and personal taste will really decide on which one is the "best".

@@NemoPropaganda Yes, that’s the biggest drawback! But as a happy owner of two asw608 I always tell people it’s perfect for small rooms, appartment buildings and listening for average of 75-80db. For that there’s no better integrating sub in the same price range. Most often the problem isn’t the sub itself, but bad integration and boominess due to room modes caused by bad acoustics. Moderately and smartely used this will beef up even big speakers in small rooms and at moderate listening levels.

@@NemoPropaganda Great man, hope you’ll like em’ as much as I do👍 I bought these two 608’s on sale for 300€ each (350us$). Can’t get nothing comparable for that price here in Finland. The only other sub that’s about the same and available here is the swedish xtz sub 8.17 (350€ each). It’s a ported 8” sub, but it has also good adjustability and can be used in sealed mode, where it reaches to about 25hz. It has a 200w rms/350 peak amplifier, so it’s a little more powerful than the b&w. But I doubt that it would sound any better in my current setup, but maybe it’s better for people who need more headroom and listen at higher levels🤔 I borrowed the asw608’s to my brother, who just bought a house with a big listening room, and the 608’s also performed really well there, with hearable bass down to 25hz after careful placement. We couldn’t drive them as loud as the main speakers and we would’ve liked more bass in the sub 30hz region, but within their limits they sounded excellent there. We crossed them over at 60hz and did room correction to 200hz(modal region) with my Antimode dualcore automatic room correction (great device👍) and what they lacked in output and extension, they made up for in tightness and punch. We used extension: A and EQ: A to get the tightest sound. Really recommend some kind of room correction (antimode, dirac, audyssey) for tighter bass. But one should use it as low as possible, somewhere between 150-300hz for the best results. Used too high it ’eats’ the natural sound of one’s main speakers in my experience🤔 Keep up the good work man👍

@keithjohnson2863
@keithjohnson2863 3 жыл бұрын
Vanatoo T0s (and T1Es) have a sub out. And an active crossover is engaged when a sub is connected to them. So you don't need to mess with the filter on the sub. Your solution would ultimately result in an analog signal being sent to the speakers, which I don't recommend. The DSP in the Vanatoos is well implemented and will be more efficient with a digital (USB, optical, coax) input. I learned this first hand when I tested my pair with an external DAC. The DAC had no (or worse) effect compared to when I used that DAC with other speakers. By the way, if you have an extra $150, consider the Rel T/Zero MKIII sub to pair with Vanatoo T0s over the Emotiva SE8. The Rel will much better musically.

@@keithjohnson2863 I just purchased the Vanatoo T0's and was researching what tiny subwoofer would pair well with it and so far I'm eyeing at the SE8, Rel T/Zero MKIII and Martin Logan Dynamo 300 (used). On Craigslist I'm seeing the SE8 for $150. Also, I'm using a Monoprice Monolith THX AAA 788 amp/dac connected to my PC using USB. Vanatoo's is connected with a split Y stereo RCA to 3.5mm cable. RCA on amp/dac and 3.5mm on back of Vanatoo's. That is my only option unless I connect the Vanatoo's to PC via USB but I don't know of that would sound better? My onboard sound drivers are not installed because using external amp/dac so can I still connect the Vanatoo's using USB? Thanks Keith!

I recently purchased 2 of these B&W 608 subwoofers used. I am very pleased with them. Much easy to find a good spot for them to perform at a high level as compared to my vintage Velodyne sub. About 8 months ago, I bought a used HTM 6 Center Channel speaker ,with its' 2 continuum drivers and a tweeter B&W developed as a result of 'trickle down technology' from their 800 Diamond Series Speakers. I love the sound of that Center channel. These speakers are part of my 5.2 surround sound system.. They are poeted by a dedicated Rotel 200 wpc amp. I have a vintage pair of B&W bookshelf speakers that I use for satellites on either side if the rear couch. My listening room is average size. (45 ft × 35 ft). My listening habits 25% movies in 5.2 SS & 75% music mostly in 5.2 SS or with all speakers firing in stereo. I'm thinking of replacing my front speakers ( B&W CDM 7NT's) & using the B&W 606 S2 Anniversary Edition bookshelf speakers. I have found that so much of the detail/beauty of the music seems 'locked inside the cabinet' of the CDM's. I have to play them really loud to tease them out. That volume of music is no longer sustainable for me or my neighbor. Those CDMs are so damn hard to drive. On the other hand, the B&W 606 S2 Anniversary Edition bookshelf speakers are quit efficient and should sing with the generous amounts of clean power I'm feeding them from my 200 wpc dedicated amp. Any thoughts, insights /suggestions about making this switch would be greatly appreciated 🙏 Thanks!

Very informative review, thanx👍 As an owner of two asw608 I agree with everything stated in this video. It’s very articulate and easy to integrate thanx to the adjustability and usability of it’s controls, and it can play very low. But it does run out of clean output when pushed too loud. I’ve owned BK electronics subs (gemini, xls400) and SVS (sb12) and the 608 is by far the easiest and best to integrate. I live in an appartment building, so I can’t have too much output in the sub 30hz region and I listen at about 80db, so for that use this sub is perfect. I’m going to get two more of them to place on opposite walls to counter room modes and make the bass more even at multiple listening posts. But even one well positioned 608 will give nice output in my main listening spot in my small listening room. The only sub(s) that I believe to be an upgrade to these, for small rooms and low output, are the app controlled SVS subwoofers, but they cost a lot more. So if you have a small room and listen at low volumes, this sub is highly recommended and it will extend the bass output even on larger speakers if one doesn’t play them too loud.

@@NemoPropaganda Four! Because I have two already😃 You should definetely get at least two, bcause the more you have, the more it counters standing waves (bass build up and dips). Two on opposite walls is good against this, but four on each wall is practically ideal. I didn’t myself believe in this four subwoofer setup, but after having a famous Finnish🇫🇮 loudspeaker builder play a stereo system with four well integrated subs, crossed over at 70hz, I can say I’ve never heard better bass or soundstage i a system before😃 It didn’t just affect the bass, it affected the soundstage, it sounded a bit like surround, even of it was jus stereo😃 This guy builds 20k, well measuring, handmade speakers. And he built those four subs we tested for a customer, but after listening he said ”I’ve never been a subwoofer guy, but after listening to this four sub system, there’s no going back. I will build four for myself”😃 And he used cheap peerless sls12 drivers, in large enclosures (80 liters), because they are sensitive and integrate well and can be crossed over at almost 2khz. Output isn’t everything, integration and sensitivity also matters☝️ But thanx for a great review! Try multiple subs, four preferably, before you go any bigger😃👍

Hi Daniel, it could be depending on your how much bass you want to add and how you set it up. If you're trying to recreate movie theater (or close to that) levels of volume & bass (~85db) then no it will not be enough but if you're like me and you listen around 70-75db then it should be enough. You can always get more out of it by changing the bass roll off from A to B if you play loud. I suggest you watch the review for the ASW608 only, i discuss it's limitations a bit more in that video.

Hi Nemo, I don't listen at loud volumes. It is typically 70-80dB. I am wondering which one digs deepest at these low volume levels? I am wondering which one gets to the 20-30Hz with the most authority. Almost any sub can product the SPL's I need at from 30Hz to 50Hz, so I am willing to give up max SPLs in those frequencies to get more LFE into the 20-30Hz range. In your review, it sounds like the B&W might actually dig the lowest. I have the opportunity to buy a gently used one for $175. But I would gladly pay $300-$400 for one of the others if they pressurize the room better between 20-30Hz. Articulation is important, but not as much as LFE between 20-30Hz. FYI, I have a size constraint of 14x14x14inches and $500 (wife acceptance factor).
@NemoPropaganda
@NemoPropaganda 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Matt, the ASW608 hands down will have the most authority at the frequencies you're referring to, granted it could also bottom out if pushed too hard at those frequencies. Start with setting the ABC switch in the A position (most extension) and if it bottoms out move to setting B. I think you might be fine in setting A though. $175 is a hell of a price, I would jump on it! If you can wait for Emotiva SE12 review that sub is 15.75" cubed so a tiny bit larger than what you're looking for but should be pretty darn good too. Otherwise $175 for an ASW608 is a no brainer as long as you set it up correctly.

Hello, The S400 and IotaVX combo is VERY good and should have outstanding bass on it's own. Of course adding a sub would make it better but before money is spent i think it makes sense to make sure you're getting the most out of what you currently have. Would it be possible for you to email me a picture of your room? my email is nemopropaganda@gmail.com. I would upgrade to a streamer first as that will most likely give you better bass response with less fiddling around and you can also experiment with adding 1-3db of bass via the SA3 tone controls if you need more. If i get annoyed by having to get out of my chair and bend over to adjust the subwoofer settings I'm guessing at 70 you won't enjoy doing that too much either :) But to answer your question while the Emotiva S8 is a quicker subwoofer with more edge to it i believe the Aperion Bravus 8D is more of a natural match to the S400 so if you like the bass of the S400 and just want more the Bravus 8D is the way to go. Both companies have generous return policies so i would say buy the one you think you would like and if you don't send it back and order the other one.

I'm currently looking for a compact sub to add to my Polk T50s (which, even though they cost half as much, i.m.o. actually sound better than the Dynaudio M10s I had before). I cannot find the Emotiva Airmotiv S8 in Germany. The closest thing would be the Emotiva BasX S8, for 250€, incl. taxes. Z Reviews and CNET gave it good marks, but reading user reviews, it seems to be prone to port chuffing at anything above whisper quiet levels. The Elac Debut 2.0 3010 appears to have come down in price a lot and is now available here for around 365€. It has 200/400W RMS/peak and even an app for calibration and control (!). The B&W 608 costs 450€ here and both the SVS SB-1000 and the PB-1000 are widely available for 599€ each, with taxes.

*come to think of it, the PB-1000 is out of question anyway, because of it's size. It'll be either Elac, B&W or the sealed SVS.

@@NemoPropaganda Yup, the old S8 is out of the race. It's also one single online shop who sells it. Apparently Emotiva aren't too well represented in Europe (in Germany, at least), which also raises questions regarding warranty, service, and such. Regarding the others, getting a cheaper unit first is quite a nice strategy: If needed, I can return it with a relatively clean conscience, as long as I'm buying the other, more expensive unit, from the same shop. 😁👍

I can't remember, this video is a bit old and I don't have any of these subs anymore, review samples are only here for about 60 days and then they get shipped back. You should be able to easily look it up online though.

Hey, gotta a question if I may... I am looking for a sub to pair with Focal Chora 806. Saw your review on B&W ASW 608. I also found a budget recomendation for the the Polk SWS 10, or HTS 10. I know the Polk is cheaper, but which one would better pair with the Focals? Is Polk that much worse than B&W? Thanks.
@NemoPropaganda
@NemoPropaganda Жыл бұрын
this review is pretty old now, while I still recommend the Emotiva SE8 very often the B&W has become more of a recommendation if you can find a used one for less than $300. At its full MSRP of $599 its overpriced and people should instead looke to the REL T5X or HT 1003 as a better alternative both of which are excellent matches for the Chora 806.

I recently got divorced and all that and I'm building what I call My Stimulus system.1200$ The emotiva is perfect as long as it's good for music too. I have no idea what receiver to get through. Speakers I'm looking at are the 3030i Q acoustics or some klipsch synergy black label towers. I love rock / metal tunes so that has to sound right. I just dont know if I want to go with a reciever only or have a amplifiers. I plan to watch movies too but definitely more music!! Any suggestions would be great. Thx I'm going to sub

I am looking at two Rel T9I to accompany my Ohm Walsh 3000's. However, I would like something just as fast and I do not need a fancy paint job and chrome handles. You think this B&W is good enough for $4000 a pair of speakers? Thanks
@NemoPropaganda
@NemoPropaganda 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly I would say no. Ohm Walsh are kind of a unique speaker, I would call call Ohm Walsh and see what they recommend just to be on the safe side but this video is also about 1 year old. My new recommendation for the $500 price point is the REL HT-1003 or Rythmik L12.

@NemoPropaganda
@NemoPropaganda 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Eugene, both brands make excellent subwoofers and neither are boomy. It's really going to come down to your budget but considering this is for movies only you'll get more bang for your buck with REL. Their HT-1205 for example is a 500w RMS 12" subwoofer. For B&W to get 500w RMS you have to get the DB4S and that's a 10" driver and more than double the cost. In fact for the price of the DB4S you can buy a 15" REL Predator :D

@NemoPropaganda
@NemoPropaganda 3 жыл бұрын
There is a really big price difference between the two, naturally the more expensive SB-1000 pro having a 12" driver, larger cabinet, and more power would outperform the smaller and cheaper SE8. The SE8 is fantastic for $300 and the the SB1000 pro is fantastic for $500.

I love the video. Thank you so much. Also be careful with Crutchfield. I made a mistake of getting something and not liking it and sending it back multiple times. I did not realize that they had a limit. Because nobody said anything to me. And they banned me from buying anything from them. Keep up the awesome work also from Crutchfield if in fact you want something if you look closely and you don’t do the two day shipping you can save about 20 to 30 bucks on the price of something you’re buying.

REL T5X is much more expensive than all of these. The Aperion will have the most output so for compact theater that or the Emotiva is a great choice but for the best critical 2ch music the REL T5X is an easy win!

Why 75db? I think you're missing detail that is not revealed at lower volumes. At higher volumes the brain retains more info. There is a fine line between too loud and not loud enough. For my brain, on most music, I play as loud as my system will, without distortion, around 95db.
@NemoPropaganda
@NemoPropaganda Жыл бұрын
I'm a little younger than most audio guys and have protected my hearing for most of my life. My latest hearing test shows I can hear up to about 18.5khz and my room is not very big so 75dB in my room could be 85dB in a larger room depending on where you measure. Additionally my gear has a very dark background so details pop even at lower volumes. I do listen louder on occassion like 85dB but anything beyond that isn't very enjoyable for me.
