Jean DuJardin is a prolific actor in France. As Bong Joon-Ho said, the Oscars are an extremely local award. Just because an actor doesn’t continue to work in the US doesn’t mean they don’t continue to have a career.

Eddie Redmayne for the “The Theory of Everything” is underrated as hell. People go on and on about how Michael Keaton should’ve won this year. But I don’t agree with that at all tbh. It baffles me how this win is seen as underserved.

Gyllenhaal was definitely snubbed. Clearly one of the top five performances of the entire decade, not just his year. His mistake was playing a character that was too easy to hate. The voters would prefer to reward hagiographies of royals and entertainers.

Brian, you are so right saying the 2010s winners don’t really age well. Really hate the fact that originals like Chiwetel Edjiofor and Michael Keaton lost to Oscar-safe, awards-baity transformation boredom. Just see how Arrival’s Amy Adams not even nominated but she got in for playing Lynne Cheney🙄

I don’t think the 2010s were particularly strong but John Dujardin absolutely deserved to win his Oscar. It’s a great performance and the best in that category. Also how can you say he’s disappeared? He’s still very much a staple of French cinema. Movies exist away from Hollywood. Blimey.

Jean Dujardin went back to France after his win because he's a french actor and he wanted to make french movies, even The Artist is technically a french movie, he hasn't "fallen off the map" he's still making movies just not in your country. to be honest i think it's kind of stupid to only assume you have a career in cinema if you're making movies in the US, i'm sorry man i like you but this doesn't sit right with me, there are plenty of amazing movies outside of the US that aren't being nominated to the oscars that you should probably pay a bit more attention to. if you want more movies JD has starred in i'd suggest you to watch those: -Deerskin -November -OSS 117 (made by the same director as The Artist) -Little White Lies take care man

I don’t agree with your point about how there’s no comparison to Redmayne’s and Gyllenhal’s performances. Jake was excellent and would’ve been my runner up had he’d been nominated. But I feel like you seriously undermine how much Redmayne had to do. Playing a well known figure, especially one with a severe disability is extremely hard while also trying to make it convincing. It’s the type of performance that could’ve been a career ender with one wrong move, and he nailed it.

Yep he seriously undermined it. That is a very HARD role to do, Eddie's remarkable transformation plus his facial expressions when he couldn't speak anymore were so good and sad. The guy even slightly dislocated his spine in his work so he absolutely was the right winner. Even the Oscar expert said it's a very good win and that people are just butthurt mad cause Keaton didn't win. But of course since it's a real life figure he's playing, the hate train begins...

The Academy has always favored performances where actors undergo extreme physical transformations. From Fredric March in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," forward to Daniel Day Lewis in "My Left Foot," and female stars have often won in performance where they "ugly up," like Grace Kelly in "The Country Girl," Charlize Theron in "Monster," and Nicole Kidman in "The Hours." In all these cases, a lot of the reason they won was due to the makeup artists!

I turned to my friend and said "if he doesn't win an Oscar" there is no justice and my friend agreed. I know you have this love for DiCaprio, an actor I have felt so often has been miscast, but Phoenix' performance is one of the best ever put on film. Seriously. Watch it again. Affleck was excellent, but again, Day Lewis was better in Lincoln and I would put him right behind Phoenix. 10. Malek - Agree with almost everything the video says, except, unfortunately, I actually don't think they managed to nominate anything I would call "much" better. Weak lineup. 09. Oldman - Garden variety "impression of a famous person" Oscar bait in a movie that has nothing else going for it, and apparently even Oldman can only do that sort of thing so well. 08. Redmayne - Nothing here. Michael Keaton was robbed. 07. Phoenix - Has any actor ever appeared to be putting himself through more rigorous emotional torture for something that ended up mattering so little? 06. Dujardin - Performance I've largely forgotten about in a movie I've largely forgotten about. I'm with the video; this decade wasn't kind to this category. 05. McConaughey - Decent performance in a movie I've largely forgotten about. This year should've been Chiwetel Ejiofor's. 04. DiCaprio - It's hilarious how hard he's trying to win here, but it's still a great performance in a great movie. I wish they'd held off till Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, though. 03. Firth - Great performance that, along with Rush's career-best supporting turn, makes the movie far more watchable than it otherwise would be. 02. Affleck - Great performance in a great, tough-to-watch movie. 01. Day-Lewis - Because he's Daniel Day-Lewis, and the other winners of this decade aren't.

You couldn't tell ANYONE that Rami Malek sucked in Bohemian Rhapsody (or that the movie sucked in general) when it came out. People looked at me like I had lobsters crawling out of my ears. Why did he win? People LOVE Freddie Mercury. That's why...and the nostalgia for the Live Aid performance pushed that role into the noms. It was designed to win. It was designed to pander. Rocketman on the other hand was a really well made movie. It wasn't as sanitized I suppose.

Manchester by the Sea is my personal favorite acting performance of all time and I know that is extreme but it wasn’t marketed for the Oscars like so many films are and I was floored. In literal tears from Affleck. Unfortunate the accusations he received, and it’s likely there’s truth to them. But separate the person from the performance. Wow. A relatable janitor from Boston who’s lived a tough life. Just everything was raw and real. 10/10 performance.

The only part of Bohemian Rhapsody that I liked is the Live Aid concert. And I didn't like Rami Malek at all as Freddy Mercury. My vote was for Bradley Cooper too. And completely agree with you regarding Taron Edgerton. I love The Artist. I watch it fairly often. But, I'm a silent movie fan. So, I'm completely OK with Jean Dujardin's win. I also love Darkest Hour. But, my Master's degree is in World War II, so I'm naturally drawn to WWII movies. And I can believe Darkest Hour getting the Best Picture nomination. Yeah, not the biggest fan of Dallas Buyers Club. So, I agree with it being in the middle of the pack. I do agree with the transformations, though. I'm a bad movie buff, and I haven't seen The Theory of Everything. So, no opinion about it. I also would have picked Michael Keaton. Glad Leo has an Oscar. The Revenant is such an uncomfortable movie, so I don't like it. Painful to watch. But, I agree that he should have gotten an Oscar for anything else. I love Colin Firth, and I do really like The King's Speech. Again, WWII movie. Yeah, Joaquin Phoenix's win is one of the best of the 2010s. I agree. Love Lincoln. But, yeah, I was thinking of that Daniel Day Lewis ranking list you did. But, I find Hugh Jackman's performance in Les Miserables weak. Then again, I think that whole movie isn't good. I'm a bad movie buff again. Haven't seen this movie. So, no opinion about it.

I’m glad you came around and gave Casey Affleck his due. I remember writing a comment about him missing from your list of Top Acting Performances of the 2010s from two years ago, and I know I wasn’t the only one to do so. Overall, this is a solid list. The top two are correct, which is most important, and I think the rest are generally in the right places. I do have a slightly different take than you on the general unsatisfying list of Best Actor winners from this decade. Overall, I think all of the performances are good and that almost all deserved to win in their individual years. However, I feel the FILMS themselves that most won for were underwhelming and forgettable. The classic case of great performances in mediocre films. Exhibit A: Eddie Redmayne - he was outstanding in The Theory of Everything and completely deserved to win, but the movie itself was not very good. Also, I agree that although I appreciate that Gary Oldman has an Oscar, I would have ranked three of the other nominated performances that year over his showy Winston Churchill.
