Brie larson was a respected indie actress back then. Short term 12 was one of the greatest indie movies of all time and it was snubbed. Every actor from this movie went on to have a successful career, rami malik, lakeith stanfield, Stephanie Beatrice, caitlyn denveer etc
@GeorgiiAird5 ай бұрын
such a shame she gained a very much negative aura around her persona by the time of winning/post-oscar stage in her career; she won a very prestigious Best Actress for Short Term 12 at auteur Locarno Film Festival (under Yorgos Lanthimos’ presidency in the jury) She’s as lowly crawling back to her acting skills, Lessons in Chemistry recently proved that. But this win still rubs me off, despite the craziness around the timely topic and much needed subject back in 2015, that overshadowed the quality of her borderline supporting performance.

@@amparonarbona5142 totally. her Cannes jury entrée came as a bit or surprise, she’s killing her fashion contract and looks like vying for a decent revival of her craft. i must admit I miss old indie gal Brie (United States of Tara and her character’s complexity glued me when the show was falling apart after the first season), so we’re not doomed. unfortunately, the history of winning Oscars for wrong roles (applies to almost 90% of the winners) and never ending who deserves what discourse will be forever on point

I love Meryl, and she deserves all the reverence. Having said that, I thought her role as Margaret Thatcher was one of her weakest. She could have won for so many others: Doubt, Prada, A Cry in the Dark, Out of Africa, many others. It’s like Bette Davis believing she deserved an Oscar for the execrable Baby Jane. She should’ve won for All About Eve or many others. And handing an Oscar to the laughable Sandra Bullock? She’s a nice screen presence, but a great actress? Nope. And poor Glen - everyone says Fatal Attraction, but forgets the extraordinary, and much finer, Albert Nobbs.

Also, Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and Cate Blanchett (Carol) were amazing choices) 4. Frances McDormand for Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri (I like her win but my choice is Sally Hawkins for the shape of water and Margot Robbier for I, Tonya) 3. Olivia Colman (I really love her win, and i like it was not expected, I really think Glenn Close was finally winning and for a very great performance) 2. Natalie Portman (one of the greats wins of the century and in the category) 1. Cate Blanchett (even though I do not love Still Alice, it is a weak movie of Woody Allen. But, Cate Blanchett sells the movie and the screenplay really helps her)

Normally I try to judge the performance and not the movie, but watching this video I find it hard to do so, and I understand Brian's comments about Steep winning for The Iron Lady. I really loved The Silver Linings Playbook so I was very happy when Lawrence won that year. I did not like Black Swan, and I would have preferred it if Annette Bening had won that year. I wanted Cynthia Erivo to win for Harriet, and I don't know why she didn't get more love for great work in a tribute to an American heroine. Anyway, if I were making this list and considered the performance first but also the movie, I'd probably have Brie Larson at the top and Renee Zellweger at the bottom.

Marion and Pike were more deserving but Moore was great in Still Alice. If the Academy had liked Gone Girl more and there wasn’t the kind of sexism we see against female roles like Pike’s, she probably would have been a strong favorite. But the Academy is not like that. Witherspoon, Jones, and Cotillard didn’t have the buzz. So Moore was an easy favorite.

Gosh, there are SO MANY actresses who deserve to finally win an Oscar. Not everyone gets one. I still wish Sigourney Weaver would get one. I think Glenn Close should've won for Dangerous Liaisons (and if voters knew they'd be giving Jodie one a few years later maybe they would have thrown it to Close.) Back in the '82 I wanted Marsha Mason to win for Only When I Laugh but there was no way she would've beaten Hepburn. I wanted Whoopi and Geraldine Page to tie in '86. This is why we make these videos cause there's lots to talk about!

I too thought Marsha Mason should have won for Only When I Laugh. I don't think Hepburn should even have been nominated, and was shocked when she beat either of the two favorites Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep. Lots of fine performances who IMO were much finer than great Kate, including Faye Dunaway for Mommie Dearest, Sissy Spacek for Raggedy Man, Bernadette Peters for Pennies from Heaven, Kathleen Turner for Body Heat, and Sally Field for Absence of Malice. And if Glenda Jackson was eligible for Stevie, I actually would have given her the win (still don't know if she was eligible for that film in 1978 or 1981 or neither!). Not a fan of Jackson's two victories, especially class, but amazing in Steve, as was Mona Washbourne in support.

Saoirse Ronans best work is in Brooklyn. I thought that performance was better than Brie Larson. Brie’s performance always felt supporting to me

The favorite was my favorite movie of 2018 and Olivia Coleman makes that movie what it was. When Olivia’s name was called I was so happy, I love Glenn Close she is very overdue for an Oscar but Olivia had the best performance in the category. In a ceremony with one of the most frustrating wins ever in best picture, Olivia winning was a small bright spot for me.

Am I the one one that i find Portman's performance in Black Swan one dimentional? in Jackie she was exceptional ,but in Black Swan it was the same voice tone and mannerisms the whole time

Your absolutely right. Her performance was not oscarworthy and the movie was just a medioce and mysogynistic version of "The Wrestler". But the marketing-campaign they created around this flick got her the Oscar.

Jennifer Lawrence above Julianne Moore?? Really?? Also, in Julianne Moore’s year there was an AMAZING performace from Marion Cotillard in Two Days, One Night. Have you seen that film? I mean, Marion is beyond brilliant in anything she does.

Ah, my greatest fear as a Blanchett fan is her getting the Meryl treatment AKA finally getting her anticipated 3rd Oscar win for the wrong film. It would definitely leave a bad taste in my mouth if that happens (which I think it will).

The Favourite, honestly, I was thinking Rachel Weisz should get position of Leading Actress rather than Supporting Actress. She did everything in that film, including falling from horses while Colman played with rabbits.

I love it when you make these kinds of videos ! My personal ranking : 10. Meryl Streep for "The Iron Lady" (Rooney Mara should've won for "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo") 9. Renée Zelwegger for "Judy" (Scarlet Johansson should've won for "Marriage Story") 8. Julianne Moore for "Still Alice" (Rosamund Pike should've won for "Gone Girl" - literally one of my favourite performances EVER) 7. Brie Larson for "Room" (Cate Blanchett should've won for "Carol") 6. Frances McDormand for "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" (I should rewatch this one) 5. Jennifer Lawrence for "Silver Linings Playbook" 4. Emma Stone for "La La Land" 3. Olivia Colman for "The Favourite" 2. Cate Blanchett for "Blue Jasmine" 1. Natalie Portman for "Black Swan" (perfection)

Still Alice feel like more like the kind of performance that you win and Gone Girl is not the type of performance that wins. Still Alice could had been nominated for best supporting actress for Kristen Stewart, her performance was so freaking good. Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady is great but the movie as a whole is a not good movie.

Im not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I have to disagree with you about The Iron Lady. Meryl Streep was just phenomenal in that movie. Much love and respect to her fellow nominees, but Meryl deserved every accolade she received for Iron Lady.

The fact that Meryl Streep didn’t win for the Devil wears Prada is insane

Best actress is probably the most attentive category than best actor
