Great tips, so glad you showed us postcards. I had recently gone to Aurora, IN to locate my grandmother's birthplace, and when I searched postcards I found a street scene from Aurora in 1893 with their house plainly visible! Bonus that family members are visible on the steps, although not my grandmother--she would not be born for 2 years. Thank you!

Lisa. If you are searching your DNA matches by location you will actually get different results whether or not you add USA to the end after the state.

Oh my goodness, talk about BSOs! I had no idea there were all those old Sydney postcards in the card catalogue. I have found a view of Sydney dating back to when we first sailed into the harbour in the 1960s! My mind is spinning with ideas to send bite sized mouthfuls of family history to the family. And when I turned the postcard over the message was to someone in New York and the postmark was only a few days after we sailed into the harbour. How amazing to think that someone in Sydney was writing that postcard as we set foot on Australian soil for the first time. I shall be downloading these v useful hot keys and search tips for sure! Thank you as always. PS Ireland next week?? All my family comes from there. What excitement!!

Nice video. Just found your channel. I may want to subscribe but I'm not ready to do that until I watch a few more. Two questions: I can't find the newsreel section in the card catalog. Where is it? Also, I don't know how to see the free show notes so I can make note of a couple of the shortcuts. When I click on your link above to get the show notes, I just get a page to pay for a subscription. Are there no other show notes available now?

Welcome to my channel! RE: Newsreels - search for "newsreels" in the card catalog keyword search. RE: Show notes - All videos and show notes are on my website at lisalouisecooke.com/elevenses/ On that page you'll learn more about which are available exclusively to Premium Members and how to gain access to the ad-free cheat sheet PDF for each episode. I explain more about show notes in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/roTYepyZptqrZq8 BTW - Subscribing here on KZbin is free and it just puts my channel in your KZbin library of "Subscriptions" which makes it much easier to find my channel again. Plus it helps support our free show so that KZbin knows folks like it and they will recommend it to other genealogists. We appreciate your support - thanks for watching!

Searching on the App has changed overtime but I have had enormous success just toggling around late at night from bed. Completely different that online, or at least it has been in the past. I think everyone should have the ancestry app for just that reason - also you can search and screenshot for future perusal. Ancestry is expensive as some were saying - I try to buy 6 months at a time and make a calendar note when to turn it off from renewing. Within a few days you will usually have a specific discount offer to come back - for me last time it was 25% off US only. I need/want all access so I am waiting for a better offer/sale. Hope these tips help someone.

Wonderful video, as usual. Would have been better had that big Tardis-blue door had been painted like an old British police box! LOL jk, I know licensing is a thing. :D I had no idea those old newsreels were available! They don't really pertain to my own personal genealogy, but I remember how I loved watching them as a kid (not real-time lol, I'm a 60s baby) as they'd play during old shows I'd watch in syndication.

Great tips. Another method of searching, is find one good record and save to the person. Continue the search by opening the record and similar possible records (if available) appear on the right of the page. You can continue in the same way as you add more records. If you need birth info open the oldest record the person. On familysearch.org when a record is open on the screen similar records will also show when a record is open. Quick tip If you fin you are using a record set frequently You can save it to your ancestry home screen. One more I use the records on Family Search for the Catholic Diocese of Toledo Ohio. They are browsable only. If you want those church records type in the search box for all records "toledo" and and one of two results will be the Catholic Diocese of Toledo Ohio. 😷😎🤗

Ancestry has an app but the user interface is quite different from the website, so some of the tips I demonstrated may not be applicable to the iPad. Thanks for watching!
