Best and Worst Feeder Mice and Rat Companies for Pet Snakes

Today, I review six frozen feeder rodent companies I've purchased from including Perfect Prey, Big Cheese Rodent Factory, Underground Reptiles, FeederSource, Arctic Mice (at PetSmart) and Gourmet Rodent (at Petco). I go over them least favorite to favorite. Here's a run-down if you want to save time!
Last choice: FeederSource.com
FeederSource is very consistent with their products. Unfortunately, they're consistently bad. A lack of customer support with no phone number, no active social media, and the worst email support line I've seen from a reptile company aren't welcoming. Their rodents smell, are very oddly packaged and are extremely expensive. I personally think they're only in business because they have a monopoly with reptile shows where nobody else is allowed to sell frozen rodents except them.
Second to last: Arctic Mice & Gourmet Rodent
These are the brands Petco and PetSmart sell. They come in small quantities and are extremely expensive. This may be ideal for those of you who want just a couple rodents in your freezer with not too many reptiles to feed. The rodents don't smell perfect, but the packaging is good and they generally look healthy to feed.
Down the middle: UndergroundReptiles.com
Underground Reptiles's packaging and product were great - in fact, I have no issues with their frozen rodents! They were scent-free and high quality. My reason for putting them third is because I don't personally support all their business practices including bulk/wholesale reptile sales, the sale of imported and field collected reptiles, and their concerning high rate of poor reviews online. However, I can't complain about their rodents.
Second favorite: BigCheeseRodents.com
Big Cheese Rodent Factory sells extremely high quality products with no issues whatsoever. I have no complaints, except for the fact that they're seemingly always out of stock of what I need. Shipping is super cheap and their site is quite nice! If they kept their stock numbers higher, they'd likely be #1 on my list.
Favorite: PerfectPrey.com
Perfect Prey has been my go-to for a while. Their consistency is unmatched and their packaging is professional and very effective. Shipping is fast and affordable when buying in bulk. Their rodents never have smell, they're always the right size, and the mice and rats themselves are always packed perfectly with exact quantities and no unhealthy rodents. The only reason I don't always buy from Perfect Prey is if they're out of an item I need, but this is rare. Super happy with them!
I am not endorsed, partnered or sponsored with any of the companies as of recording this video. These are my own, unfiltered opinions.

DAMN, this is so important - especially the tweets you sent out every so often to publicly shame the company into talking to you. I trust your reviews a lot because you're always so chill and willing to place the blame where it really deserves to go, on either side of the equation, so if Alex doesn't like something, there is DEFINITELY a good reason! And enumerating them, that's so important too. This format is basically exactly how to do a comparison-shopping video, especially leaving the best for last, so the audience clicks away with a general upbeat vibe.

Yes, that's true. If you watch his petsmart and petco video about where they get their animals from, I believe that underground reptiles and reptiles by mac are the two biggest sellers. I do believe that companies that sell animals in bulk really dont care that much about their animals. For them it's just a way to make money. Especially because they also sell wildcaught, I would never buy from them. Companies that sell thousands of animals never have really good care, so buying from such big companies really us a miss or hit where you can get kinda good pets from or absolutely horrible sick animals...

Backwater and Underground are the absolute worst from what I've heard, while BHB, LLL, and Snakes at Sunset are only marginally better (for the record I despise Brian Barcyzk but I've heard slightly better things about BHB than backwater or underground). This is just based on what I've seen over the past few years and my own experience with SAS. But any large distributer is risky and their care and quality control are completely inferior to smaller breeders recommended by others in the hobby. Safest route is shelling out a little extra money to support small, well-respected breeders rather than rolling the dice on a cheap animal that could arrive either half-dead or completely healthy depending on your luck.

This channel has the positivity that this hobby needs! Seriously, as a keeper of a pet boa for 10 years I had gotten super disillusioned with the culture surrounding herpetoculture--the ridiculous toxic masculinity, lack of regard for animals' well-being, and the supposed ideal of keeping as many morphs as possible in barren plastic tubs that never see the light of day. Over the years I got really sad about having a reptile and felt it was a stupid mistake to be ashamed of. This channel has totally brightened my outlook about the hobby, and inspired me to consider using my existing bit of expertise to rescue/rehabilitate herps in the future, when I have the means.

If feeder source is who I'm thinking of... ugh. Definitely only bought from them because of the convenience factor. I think my last batch of rats from them had been re-frozen because one literally POPPED in hot water. Never again 🤢
@georgiasoaps
@georgiasoaps 4 жыл бұрын
ugh I had that happen to me once (different brand though), it's so gross. It popped when my snake constricted it, getting blood and guts all over the glass of his tank, and he was nice enough to actually CARRY IT AROUND smearing blood as he went. Apparently it can happen from the temperature difference of putting frozen things in water that's too hot, which compromises the integrity of the stomach wall.

Georgia Bence it’s the gas inside of them, it expands with heat and makes a rodent balloon 🎈, it’s always best to defrost them in the fridge before warming them :)

@@stephanothecat7743 haha "rodent balloon" is something I don't believe I've ever heard before. That makes, sense, that was always my guess. Thanks, that's what I've been doing since and so far it hasn't happened again (fingers crossed). I know defrosting in the fridge is supposed to be more sanitary for the snake too since it doesn't give the bacteria as much of a chance to take over.

I started off buying from a local, family owned store and never had refusal, except for during shed. Switched to arctic mice since Petsmart is much closer and he stopped eating. At first I thought he was refusing because I had moved him to a new tank, turns out it was the arctic mice. After a month of refusing meals every week I went back to the local reptile store, and he's eating again.

THIS is the video that NEEDED TO BE MADE. You have a new subscriber! Thank you for exposing the HIGH PRICES of Feeder Source. It is easy to have a high price when you have NOONE ELSE to compete with you! Then you now get to sell dry goods. And since you rip people a new butthole with those high prices on rodents, you can afford to sell your dry goods at cost. They don't NEED to make a profit on dry goods cause their getting high prices on their rodents with NO COMPETITION! That will help Feeder Source to drive out their competition on dry goods, who aren't allowed to compete with them on rodents. Then when there are no more dry good vendors, they will be high as they can on dry goods too. So THANK YOU FOR SHEDDING SOME LIGHT on this situation. It is also looking like Repticon need to change the name from "Reptile Shows" to dry goods and frozen rodent shows since there are more cages, rats and crickets at the shows than there is reptiles. Or maybe call it the Reptifeedersourcecon. And you are right. I got rats from FeederSource, and when I thawed them their stomachs actually burst. WTH is up with that. I suspect that the rodents must thaw out while they are traveling from shows and then they just refreeze them or something.

It wouldn't surprise me if the larger breeders like feedersource keep their animals in horrific conditions and this is why they smell so bad, probably knee deep in excrement with hundreds of rats per cage.

I dont know what is the implications of buying live mice at expos, a few days ago I went to one and there’s were a TON of baby mice in bins as feeders. I think the brand was called Snake Snacks. I don’t know if it’s alright or not, or if there are complications with live feeders at expos.
@bubblinebee
@bubblinebee 4 жыл бұрын
Generally I wouldn't recommend feeding live, it's less humane for the mice, dangerous for the snakes, and typically more expensive.
@reckbiscuit6214
@reckbiscuit6214 4 жыл бұрын
I am aware! I just didn’t know what was the implications of selling live, with the intentions of killing the mouse before feeding. It seemed that selling the mouse fully live and wholesale like I saw, gives off the wrong message. I do believe they also had frozen packs, but that ingrains the Idea of “either feeding live or frozen” even more.
@rdizzy1
@rdizzy1 4 жыл бұрын
@snoopy dubnation They should still be weaned off of live no matter what, and not just continuously fed live, individuals should always continuously be attempting to wean off of live. Live rats fuck up ball pythons all the time, even with seconds. Monitor is slightly different, but can still get injuries, just extremely unlikely.

I get rodents from Rodent Pro at one of my local expos and have ordered from American Rodent Supply. I’ve been happy with both to an extent. I ordered a bag of 50 large mice to split with a friend and was really surprised by the number of mice that had died biting another one. They were also crammed into a ziplock bag and it was pretty hard to get them all separated. I’ve only purchased smaller stuff from Rodent Pro so far and my smaller snakes take them with no issues.

Amateur taxidermist here, a few weeks ago I ordered feeder rabbits from Rodentpro for taxidermy. Once I got to skinning them I noticed a bit of a greenish belly and that rotten meat smell. I opened up the belly of one of the rabbits and found brown, rotten insides. This does not happen when a dead rabbit sits out for max 30 mins, this happens when a rabbit sits in the heat for a few hours. The skin was ruined, as was the meat and I had been planning on feeding it to my dog. If you smell something funky on your feeder animals, I suggest opening one up and seeing for yourself if there’s anything wrong. Sometimes the insides are worse than the outsides.

That's not too surprising. They probably had a rabbit die naturally, or through neglect, and froze it after they finally found it hours later. I'm sure most big breeders are guilty of that.
