Top 3 make perfect sense, all good quality. I would be curious to see a real life audit of 5 to 10 year old installs. Sample several as you travel the country to see how climate and age impact performance and appearance. There are clearly fans of various brands represented in the RI community. As always, great video for contractors and homeowners.

"We believe that if the shingle has major problems with the granule loss in the beginning, most likely in the lifetime, it's also going to be the case." Would you say that granule loss reduces the longevity of a shingle? If so, then from a homeowner's perspective, this is a very important rating category. Perhaps it should be weighted higher than some of the others. Perhaps you should have more than one overall rating system: one for the shingling company and another for the homeowner. Or maybe add a rating system based on overall durability of the shingle, using the factors that contribute to that. Thanks again for this video. Very well done.

GAF's lack of a backbone to be reviewed and compared to other shingle manufacturer's products, automatically takes them out of the running for my re-roof job coming up. So, take that GAF!!!! I'm also looking for a Green color, so that knocks others out of the contest too!

Malarkey has always preformed well. I have lost 1 Malarkey shingle in 36 years, the winds exceeded 130 mph just after installation. Certainteed is the only shingle i have seen blow off twice in 2 years and both roofs were installed excellently, i had to go back later and hand tab the entire 60 square roof after Certainteed bought the home owners a brand new roof.

@@chrisginoc for what its worth, I had a roofer bring by some full sized shingle samples so I could examine them.. a certainteed, malarky vista and ecoasis.. I tried the roll up test on all of these, rolling them tight, tar side out, like a burrito.. then unrolling and examining how well they held up...the certainteed cracked in alot of places and showed damage when unrolled on the granule side as well as on the black tar side... the ecoasis also cracked when rolled up..not good and Not like any tests ive seen online where they were damage free... lastly, i did the vista..it felt noticeABLY more flexible than the other 2 which seemed similiar in granules and construction but the vista seemed a different animal... more flexible, granules adhered much better and it had the least damage, almost none,when unrolled... In the shingles defense, I did the test in about 70 degree temps...I have a feeling, the online tests where done by leaving the shingles out in the sun to get hot, then folding them...my tests were torturous to those shingles...after rolling up, i stood on them, then unrolled... painful for the roofer to watch and he was impressed with the results... me, less so becuz I was expecting No damage at all... he said any normal asphalt shingle would break under that test.

I don't have a problem with how you did your testing and I have my opinion and I rely on what our roofers say since they install these products every day. They rate the OC Duration way above the Landmark and I'm a CT fan or at least used to be. I was one of the top sellers of the Malarkey products since 1992 in the Denver Front Range area up until 2013 when the contractor I sold for had a negative bias for Malarkey but they were a cheap minded company. The tear test is an interesting test, I would like to see more of that alone and can it be done differently, probably. Wind tunnel tests would be a good video to produce. Thanks for all your effort none the less.

Thank you for this video, I live in Canada and I have to do my roof again after 18 years. The contractor was using the IKO shingles on my roof and I was told that the product has 25 years of warranty, however the shingles on the sunny side started to fall apart already after 18 years. Depends on the market honestly. Weather affects shingles differently. Texas sun destroys, dfw is also one of the highest rated for hail events is 5 to 15 years. 5 if hit with a storm.

Thanks for the education. Too bad GAF isn't on your list. It's what I have overhead now. However, a hail storm and Google search brought me here and I think I'll choose either OC or Malarkey for my next roof. One other category you might consider for next time is "Value". Is an upgraded nail zone worth the upgrade in price? Perhaps Tamko may get another star for striking a good balance between cost and quality. I saved $5000 because I chose not to get the sunroof and wheel upgrade option on my truck. It wasn't worth it to me.

So informative. I want a blue shingle which is very limiting. Malarkey and Atlas are out. I was leaning toward the Iko Dynasty, but now I'm second guessing that. OC Duration might be the winner. Although it seems a lot of roofers are fans of Certainteed. I hate making grown up decisions.

We live in the SW US and GAF is by far number one in sales. However, both Malarkey and PABCO are gaining ground because lots of folks have had a poor experience with GAF. TAMKO is sold here but it is used mostly for commercial construction like apartments as well as new construction. We had a 100 year hail storm in 2016 and literally everybody got a new roof at the exact same time. My neighbor and the guy across the street each bought Class IV GAF Timberline. I bought PABCO Premier 40 which are still on the roof. My neighbor and the guy across the street have since had to replace the GAF Class IV from a few very minor hail storms; they both bought GAF's cheapest Timberline 30 year AR shingle to replace a 3 year old GAF Class IV. How many times do you have to be hit in the head to know it hurts??? . If I had to do it again, I would buy PABCO or Malarkey. Haven't heard anybody complain about either of those. A neighbor that bought ATLAS Class IV in 2016 has also had pretty good luck.

You reviewed IKO Dynasty, but for the 1 star granule loss section you said it was for Cambridge. Did you just misspeak on that? I recently ok'd my roof to be done next month with IKO Dynasty. The Cambridge line gets a bad rep and I think that blends into why the online reputation is bad for IKO too. Cause it's based on Cambridge. Everything I've read and watched, including some of your prior videos, suggest Dynasty is a pretty solid product. Thanks for taking the time to make videos and pass along information. You really helped a small common homeowner like myself make a decision a few weeks ago!

@andyhackshaw1207
@andyhackshaw1207 4 жыл бұрын
I believe that was a misspeak. I also don't believe the granule loss category makes sense. The excess "carrier" granules in a bundle are overspray and didn't come off the shingle. They were never on there to begin with. The shingles themselves are completely coated. Probably money lost by the manufacturer, but its not granule loss. That can happen, but its after years on the roof. It shows as shiny spots on the roof when so many stones come off, you can see the fiberglass mat.

How can Tampko score a 5 on granule loss? A 7 year old Tampko shingle will look like its been pummeled by hail when there has been no storms at all. IKO shingles have the weakest seal strip in the roofing business, 90% of my wind repairs are IKO shingles. OC runs about 93% of a square per 3 bundles and have become a lighter shingle since they have become a big box store staple. CertainTeed Landmarks are built like tanks.

I have Duration on my roof for almost 11 years. Three hurricanes, Irma, Elsa, and Ian. Elsa was not too powerful, more rain than wind. I have not lost a single shingle, not even during Ian eventhough my home was flooded out by storm surge. My only complain is granule loss. There is tons of it, and you can see the shingle color change due to granule loss. It is so bad that I don't see the roof lasting another 5 years. There is no blistering or hail damage to blame.

Dimitry, Love your videos and learned alot so far. Live in Northwest Ohio (don't judge me, I'm not from the area),1st time homeowner, have some repairs needed to roof, and looking at replacing shingles on entire roof. Have two quotes for roughly same amount from different experienced contractors/brands. Question is for approx same price, should I put on Altlas Pinnacle pristine (with Signature Select System, no ridge vents) or Certainteed Northgate (with ridge vents and 5 star warranty)? Pinnacle is not class 4, with Northgate is class 4 impact resistant. Your video shows Pinnacle better than Landmark, but is it better than Landmark Pro , Landmark Premium and Northgate? Which manufacturer has better roofing system (underlayments, ice/water protection)? I have areas/valleys that don't get sun in winter... snow accumulated in past, iced and melted and leaked into garage. Discount for impact resistance for me is only $120/yr, not really seeing the benefit. Reviewed severe weather history in my area, and shows mostly penny-quarter sized hail , with winds up to 70 mph...Pinnacle shingles upto 130 mph, while Northgate only warranty up to 110mph (130mph with upgrade). Algae resistance/warranty is important to reduce maintenance down the road. Atlas with lifetime* AR, while Nortgate with only 15 year warranty for AR. Leaning towards Atlas Pinnacle based on your testing, but see benefits to Northhgate's SBS shingles for weather . What else did I miss or need to consider? I'm looking to the best shingle for the value, not cheapest, but not most expensive.

I have 15 year old GAF shingles that had significant hail damage from earlier in 2020 and only lost a few shingles in Hurricane Laura with no water damage. They were hand nailed if that matters. My biggest complaint is the significant granular loss and almost impossible to walk on from the loose granules. Anyway, not sure if I will go back with GAF though.

Thank you for your very informative presentation. I am a woman who knows nothing about roofing material, well until now . That being said, I need a new roof on a property that I own in California. My question is , My contractor is recommending Malarky Ecoasis Solar reflective shingles. Can you tell me if Malarky Highlander is comparable to Ecoasis. My gut is telling me that I want Highlander and am willing to pay more for it. However I would like your take on this . The contractor told me that in California I should use a "cool roof" and I am not sure if Highlander is a "cool roof". Is Highlander head and shoulders a better roof than Ecoasis or am I ok to go with Ecoasis? Thank you in advance for your opinion.

Hi! Malarkey's Highlander shingle is actually the entry-level shingle. The Ecoasis line is a solar reflective version of the Highlander shingle, so it will carry the same performance (weight, strength, granule adhesion, etc.).

@@RoofingInsights3.0 our Ecoasis NEX is actually just our Highlander NEX shingle, with the extra solar reflective granules. So, you are not only getting all the benefits of the Highlander platform, you're also getting the reflectivity. Which makes sense why Roofing Insights hasn't worked with the product. Ecoasis shingles have measured radiative property listed with the Cool Roof Rating Council and can be used to comply with California Energy Code Title 24, Part 6 Cool Roof Requirements.

I will hand it to this gentleman he did cover a lot. He also missed a lot as well. The test appears to be missing many other aspects of the shingle and its performance. I'm familiar with most and have had installed most as well. Region has a lot to do with performance or the lack there of. First question for my friend at Insight is in the weight category. Why are we testing per bundle when we are talking per square weights? Lets redo the test and randomly pick bundles from different pallets of material and maybe different manufacturing dates. 2nd question is in the nail zone category. I see wide zones and I see narrow zones. If we look at the profile of the shingle especially where the shingle is mated or overlapped (where its to be nailed for manufacturers warranty to be valid) we see various overlaps (some small and some actually as wide as the front nail zone which appears). Some manufacturers add a tape strip to help with uplift which contractors are selling as better with high winds? I'm not so sure. Corpus Christi's storm of 2017 didn't discriminate on what shingle was installed. In your opinion Mr. Insight whats a better system? Hand nailed or pneumatically nailed. Maybe give me a few reasons why or why not. What is a pull test supposed to prove again? I see a lot of 3-tab roofs(supposedly inferior) that I'm sure would fail pull tests but are still performing quite well. What are we really testing here? I feel some manufacturers have skewed or manipulated our understanding of what a roofing shingle should do. Maybe this is why GAF didn't respond. Let apologize for that last comment. I'm sorry. Lets move on to count and consistency. Tell me if I'm wrong but why are the manufactures selling squares of material (list above tested)in 3 bundles per square instead of 4. The inconsistency could be eliminated. When I break something into thirds it doesn't work out evenly. Are we educating the public or shoveling ____? Moving on to granule loss. How many months or years in fact has this test been in affect for your results? I hope that opening up a bundle and inspecting what was left in the plastic bag wasn't what you used for this test. Why is this test even relevant? Maybe lets test the granules (Algae version, Solar reflective) themselves or maybe the bonding adhesive. Do all manufacturers use their own components or do they sell to other manufacturers. Lets test the fiberglass mat and the differences each manufacturer uses. Lets test the asphalt and who uses the most filler so they need gimmicks to sell their shingles. I'm sorry again for running my mouth. Why should the consumer pay for an additional warranty? Some manufacturers are going directly to the roofing contractor and offering some sort of ridiculous status as a Super Duper roofer that can offer a Super Duper warranty that the consumer must pay for. Don't the manufacturers believe in their product and think that their standard warranty will hold water? Most consumers move before the warranty is over. Wait did I just figure out what some Roofing manufacturers are BANKING on. Why can't the manufacturers place a warranty on the roofing shingle installed no matter how many occupants? Mr. Insight I appreciate all your dedication and insight. I do feel your service is good and could be better. Keep up the good work! A former roofer.

Iko granular loss is so bad that it’s very slippery and dangerous to install. Gutters are full of granules by the time an install is done. Granules are also what protects your shingles from the sun. So yes it is a relevant thing to test for. Read into how malarkey shingles are made and you will see why it is number one. This test is spot on.

We have been in business for 43 years, and the 3 owners have a combined 95 years of INSTALLATION EXPERIENCE because we install with our employees on a daily basis. We have used Tamko for 43 years. These are lab test results. Go do a field test study of 20 year old roofs and talk to installers with 30+ years experience and your results would be VERY different. Local wind storm proved that Tamko's sealant was much better than other brands. If you have ever installed these brands on a daily basis, Tamko Heritage shingles lose less granules when installing in extreme heat, AND are more pliable and break less when installing in extreme cold. The only thing I agree with is the nail zone, which could be better, but if you have good installers who actually get the nails in the nail zone, and because of Tamko's proprietary sealant, which is the best in the industry, your shingles will not go anywhere! Tamko makes one of the best shingles despite this study!

Im going to guess that the only shingle that sealed indoors within 1 day was OC. Their sealant is super sticky. I've had a few occasions in the past where a customer adds a tankless water heater or something else a few weeks after roof replacement and when I go back to cut in and slide in the vent, both OC and Atlas are stuck solid and take a little extra effort and care to pull up. @@justinomora6678 I've only ever used Vista AR from Malarkey but their sealant is great. Agreed with Thomas 100%. Certainteed 4th place? In which world are you living? Compare Certainteed Landmark PRO to O.C Duration or anything in the market place. Also it should be noted Dmitry the shingles your company installs are Owens Corning wether you think it's biased or not you maybe should let the "homeowners" know. You personally wouldn't eat at a 3.7 rated restaurant? Really? You do not have the years of experience on roofs to see what has failed over the years. Also WARRANTIES ...Have a language specialist explain to you how they are not all created equal. You keep saying IKO and others are larger but that's not good at all. More exposure to the weather and easier wind lift. That's why when you get to a 4 pitch we do a 4in exposure to the weather. Most shingles are pretty close in manufacturing but most roofers are not! Keep up the fight!

What happens to the overall ranking if you rank them in each category? E.g. if company A outperforms all competition in granule loss they get a 5 but they're on par with everyone else in pull test they might still get a 5. Thanks so much for the information, decisions, decisions but your work certainly is making it easier. Thanks so much. We just had a roofer start a quote for us today, he generally goes with Tamko or Atlas, makes me slightly nervous to hear he uses Tamko after seeing your review but maybe it's a 3.7 meal vs the 4.6. If the price is the same I'll probably God willing be going with the Atlas indeed. Thanks so much. He's been doing it for years and mentioned how much grit comes right out of the bags of the GAF and mentioned that he wonders how much stays on the shingle and that it is also dangerous which I believe I heard you mention in either this video or a previous one. Thanks again, great, great stuff. One thing that seems to be a big up seller at least around here and I'd love to hear your thoughts and comments on it is 15, 30lb felt vs ice/water shield over the entire roof etc, one area the roofer didn't think was worth it with architectural shingles for the most part which I appreciated his honesty. Hopefully he is right. Yikes, lastly he didn't really suggest adding a "roof vent, we do have a gable attic fan but I'm wondering if it's really enough and if a ridge vent really might be worth it. To me this is like comparing Coke, Pepsi, and RC Cola. Depends on individual preference and experience. All the laminated shingles as far as I know are made roughly the same way, but I guess some variation in their exact specifications and quality control. Class 4 being a bit of an exception since they are subject to some additional impact testing.
