With the Zircon you need to hold the button down and move it fully past the stud then come back and mark the edges. This allows the unit to calibrate for the centre of the stud. Some of those new wall scanners are impressive, Bosch have one that can detect plastic pipes and even network cables in concrete, not cheap but if you are a contractor it's probably cheaper than drilling through the wrong thing on a construction site.

how well do any of these work with popcorn ceilings? I need to hang things from the garage ceiling.
