Something I really loved about Pinocchio which I don't often see mentioned is how it subverts the original moral of obeying your parents (and other authority figures in your life). The original story was meant to scare kids into going to school and growing into a responsible adult; the Land of Toys (Pleasure Island in the Disney movie) and its transformation of kids into donkeys was meant to represent kids slacking off all day and ignoring their education, becoming adults who do grueling grunt work for little-to-no pay. We even got a scene where Pinocchio reunited with the recently donkeyfied Lampwick, just as he was dying from being overworked and underfed. Meanwhile, Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio, now set during the rule of Benito Mussolini, takes the stance that you _shouldn't_ blindly obey all authority figures. Geppetto is very much misguided by his own personal issues, and the Podestà is a fascist that tries to recruit kids to fight for the fatherland. Candlewick's story is even reversed compared to the original; he starts off trying to earn the approval of his father the Podestà, and his ultimate show of disobedience is portrayed as a noble moment.
@arisu_6635 Жыл бұрын
Oh i realized it too! Tbh i never really liked Pinocchio for it's messages and how basically said you better obey or you're gonna get punished, i never realized that the donkeys were a menthapor becouse for me they were just scary, and i think at the end of the day they work more as something scary to scare the children. But Guillermo Del Toro has such a difrent message which i think is way more intresting and complex
@ladyerisrose Жыл бұрын
I know! I never liked the original moral of Pinocchio and this movie just went and completely threw it out the window. I also love how the theme of "breaking the rules" ties in when he leaves Death early to save Geppetto.
@tristantries9211 Жыл бұрын
I mean it's not terrible to teach kids to not constantly rebel. Going to school, listening to your parents, not breaking the law ect ECT are just fine morals for young children. You add nuance as they grow older because of course blind obedience is dangerous but the idea that you can't ever trust the basic authorities in your life for kids is actually really bad for them and causes stress and anxiety. Young kids need structure and boundaries and to know they can trust that someone bigger than them understands what's best and cares for them. I think the old Pinocchio's lesson was just for a younger audience since it was more simple.
@StardustWhip Жыл бұрын
@@tristantries9211 Of course; I'm not saying that the original moral was a bad lesson to teach kids. I just liked that Del Toro's version played with the moral to do something really different with its characters, compared to most versions of Pinocchio.

I'm so glad you talked about 'the house', I loved every story and really wanna talk about it with more people. My theory is that each family is portrayed as whatever the house sees them as. I think Turning Red, even though it’s not the best animated feature of last year, it was such an amazing film for Pixar. I think the family struggles were handled perfectly and how it is not just one sided. The mother also being in the same situation as Mei was an interesting contrast as a whole. Also I loved the scene with the father being supportive of her daughter, which is such a great scene. I can understand that some can understand the dialogue and jokes can range from cringe to awkward, but I think it is the feeling of scenes being awkward for some characters and uncomfortable works with the idea of growing up and living life. One of my personal favorite Pixar films ever. Not per say THE best, but a great film nonetheless.

For me, it gave me just what I wanted from "Brave" all those years ago, so I can certainly appreciate that myself. Really enjoyed it, and sad to see it got shafted on a release the way it did, then it only got worse with "Lightyear" getting the huge push it did and still bombing and "Strange Worlds" entirely being left to flounder in the water. They really need to get back on their game with animation, but this will be a good chance for other companies to step in if they won't, since they seem way more content with just turning every animated feature they own into "Live-Action" to "Do it right" at this point than working on the quality of them.

Something I certainly noticed with 2022's animated films was that the year was a great showcase for different forms of animation, whether that be stop motion (The House, Pinnochio), 2D animation (My Father's Dragon) and 2D/3D hybrids (both of DreamWorks films). I mention this because I hope this is a sign that we will be seeing more diversity within the field of big budget animated films, as opposed to the same looking movies over and over again, i.e everything we've been getting from Disney and Pixar for years The other thing I would like to mention is that DreamWorks seriously outdid both Pixar and Disney this year, probably the first time that's happened since the original Shrek. I doubt DreamWorks is about to go through any sort of Renaissance, especially with Trolls 3 and a live action HTTYD on the horizon, but with Disney and Pixars films becoming worse and worse with each year (with some exceptions like Encanto and Soul), even DreamWorks mediocre films will seem like masterpieces compared to whatever Disney and Pixar put out. Either way, it was nice to see DreamWorks make two films in a row that were up to the standard of quality between 1998 and 2012, while Disney and Pixar continue to put out films ranging from the mediocre (Turning Red) to the absolutely awful ( Lightyear, Strange World). Hopefully these things I've noticed are a sign of things to come.

@courtneymcaulay7501 To be more specific, not only did the film prioritize its humor over its emotion (almost reminding me of a mid-late 2010's DreamWorks film at points), but when the film did attempt emotion, it fell completely flat because not only is Mei not that compelling, but her Mother is one of the most unlikable animated characters I've seen in years, and her "redemption" at the end felt like a forced sob story. Also, the entire climax is one of the dumbest things I've seen in a movie (seriously, twerking). Overall, the film has its moments, but is easily on the lower end of Pixars catalog.
@gustavoduarte3507 Жыл бұрын
@@mannymattina3792 I don't agree at all, but fair enough. I do think Lightyear was really mid and forgettable save for the first 15 minutes, while Turning Red was amazing, it showcased a great coming of age story with a lot of heart and emotion. The twerking scene was one of the highlights for me, such a fun and creative climax, with many of the so called "crass" movements parents get so offended about, and showcasing them in a way that in the end, they don't really matter that much in the grand scheme of things. I understand peoples complaints about the movie, its style and overall presentation was purposely "cringe" because teenagers do act like that, and that may not be for everyone. But the heart of the movie is just embracing all of you, the bad sides, the cringe sides, the good sides, embrace it. It's basically "don't kill the part of you that is cringe, kill the part that cringes" in movie form. And i understand how many times this message was shown in animated movies before (A LOT), but in how earnest the movie is about its themes, makes the message hit way more. So i thought it did it really well, even going as far as showing other members (older members, specifically) of the family dealing with it, and coming to terms with themselves. It had just as many heart and emotion as Luca did for me, another amazing movie from Pixar
@mannymattina3792 Жыл бұрын
@gustavoduarte3507 I see what you mean there, and you make good points. Like I said, I enjoyed the movies humor and animation, but the problem is not everyone has constant cringe moments or overbearing parents. My point is Pixar films are usually more universal and can connect with everyone, where Turning Ref portrays scenarios that not everyone has gone through. Overall, I can see what may not have worked with me, at least may work with some others.

I really do love it when live action directors step into the realm of animation to create their own animated projects. Of course we got people Richard linklater, wes Anderson, and guillermo del toro. But i do wish some others would create their own animated projects. Imagine an animated film by Quentin Tarantino or Christopher Nolan. Also, If I had a nickel for every time james hong character had to be involved in a supernatural dilemma involving the main character who’s a rebellious 13 year old girl with supernatural powers, I would have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice this year.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is easily the best animated movie of 2022. From the gorgeous animation, deep messages, clever comedy and awesome fight scenes. It's one of DreamWorks' greatest movies in years. Loved Turning Red but 2022 goes to DreamWorks for the first time since 2016. And I'm still bummed that Puss didn't win the Academy Award and the other awards it was nominated.

Best of the year: Rise movie. I was stunned into silence after watching it and then screamed afterwards because it was so good. And considering that TMNT is my biggest Special Interest at the moment, safe to say I was hyped. Most looking forward to for 2023: Mutant Mayhem, no doubt. Also hyped for SpiderVerse and the new Barbie movie coming out, and Mario was actually really good.

I remember when we thought Lightyear was going to be an emotional, deep, and gorgeous movie, Turning Red was gonna be a cringey, forgettable, and way too hip Illumination-tier flick, and The Last Wish was going to be just another sequel with nothing noteworthy or interesting about it. And wouldn’t you know… Lightyear turned out to be forgettable and boring, Turning Red was a surprisingly enjoyable movie with a fun story, and TLW ended up being a gorgeous masterpiece with an amazing and engaging story and character development.

The action sequences where really fun, the animation style was new and very different to what we are used to seeing in dragon ball, and the movie finally gave minor characters such as Piccolo and Gohan their much deserved spotlight, while Goku and Vegeta were the B plot

With how many boring or unremarkable movies there were this year I really wonder why it wasn’t included. It wasn’t a masterpiece but it was solid: even non-Dragon Ball fans who saw it seemed to like it. I’d say it was around on par with Film Red, and that was also from an action shonen series. Don’t see why both couldn’t have been included.

I thought it was well worth it! The characters are great, and i really like how it's not about giant robots fighting, but people just chilling on an island for most of the time, Studio Ghibli vibes. For me, the overhype didn't affect me too much for Puss in Boots. It's easily one of the year's best and one of DreamWorks best. However, while not the movie's fault, the fan base it generated became so obnoxious for putting down any future Disney and Pixar projects, only for them to whine that the company "fell off" upon Ruby Gillman and Trolls 3 being announced, showing how little they have a crap about animation or DreamWorks as a whole.
@SiRenfield Жыл бұрын
Oh as I noted in my own comments they ESPECIALLY took losing both the Oscar and Annie for best animated feature especially poorly. Dismissing Pinocchio as “Oscar bait trash nobody cares about” and while there is truth in how the Academy is out of touch, they 1. *often say that while fully admitting they haven’t seen it* 2. Really have difficulty seeing the forest from the trees in terms of victory for smaller studios sure the press treats it as a victory to del Toro and Netflix but let us not forget Shadowmachine’s (the studio behind Moral Orel and BoJack) contribution. Like I was especially critical of people treating it as a “chance to pwn” when in reality to quote Some Jerk With a Camera “Universal is owned by Comcast!”
@DangerDavez Жыл бұрын
I mean you are dealing with a vocal minority here. 99% of people don't have any allegiance to any particular studio and most don't even know which studio is making which movies. I think The Last Wish is a much needed breath of fresh air for the animated medium. It certainly reinvigorated my love for animation and it gets my vote for the best movie (not just animated) of 2022. Unfortunately some people don't know how to praise something without putting down something else.

There are really some amazing films on this list, some of which was even new to me! I enjoy the brief analysis offered for each one, although I am again a tad disappointed donghua films still struggle to get some attention directed at it. Specifically I really loved _New Gods: Yang Jian,_ although I know a lot of western critics didn’t like it because its storytelling style didn’t fit neatly into western expectations (specifically it does rely lots on existing knowledge of lore and can feel way too packed, but that is just sort of how Chinese myths go). In terms of films I’m excited for in 2023, I have my fingers crossed for an international release of _Deep Sea_ aka《深海》and _The Storm_ aka《大雨》because both look amazing. And as for the films in this list, there’s so much variety! Of course _Puss in Boots: The Last Wish_ was absolutely stellar, although I definitely watched it later than most due to having a busy schedule at school. I think it absolutely lives up to the hype, although small tiny aspects of it may have been _overhyped,_ but it wasn’t too much of a detractor. Many of the jokes still landed and the twists were still twists. I also agree about _TMNT_ 2012 and _Rise._ I still love the former and I think I always will, but I’m looking forward to seeing where the rest of _Rise_ takes me while I get caught up! I do also still need to catch up on the studio’s other project, _Monkie Kid,_ considering my own Chinese heritage and me growing up with the 1999 animated Monkey King. It’s a must because he’s my childhood hero, although I admit sometimes the fans overtaking every aspect of _Journey to the West_ tags online can be a bit annoying… But that’s neither here nor there. Basically, what I was trying to say is that the animation behind both are amazing. 😆 Oh, and the _One Piece_ film sounds fun! I’m not into the series because it’s just too huge for me to handle, but your description of the _Shounen Jump_ movies did make me chuckle because it’s _so_ accurate. You get that with _Naruto_ and _Bleach_ but even with non-shounen stuff like Toei’s _Precure_ series-there’s just too many films and seasons releasing each year for me to keep up with them all! And the films are often solid films in their own right, but they do follow a strong formula and have lots of tropes and may not resonate or dig as deeply as other films _because_ of their ties to a franchise. And I almost forgot to add this, but on _Turning Red…_ I know a lot of people have criticized it for various reasons (some more valid than the rest), but given my ability to relate to Mei-I am also Canadian and of Chinese descent and I like to draw and I’m a girl with a complex relationship with my mom. So while I’m a bit younger than Mei, a lot of her experiences feel familiar as a result. I don’t care that generational trauma has been done before-it does mean something to have a character that looks like me go through this story with all the displays of culture that I can find familiar. It’s the same way I felt about _Crazy Rich Asians_ and it being a “cliché, shallow romcom.” That may be true, but it _can nevertheless still mean something just_ to see Asians who look like me acting out these familiar stories on the big screen with an Asian twist to it. And Mei’s reconciliation with her mom did offer a catharsis that _Encanto_ also does, but not to the same degree for me just because I could relate to _Turning Red_ more. Also, _Turning Red_ was goofy and I enjoyed its humour, even if it didn’t result in anything too mature or innovative in its climax. The climax worked well enough as is, and I enjoyed the action and the emotionally resonant moments between Mei and her mom. Even the hubbub around the period stuff feels ridiculous when considering the red panda wasn’t _just_ that. Metaphors can be multilayered, and beyond the period, it’s a metaphor for puberty, but even beyond that, for growth and thus on growing out of some aspects of your family and the breaking with parts of your family’s culture that don’t resonate with you. So like with _Everything Everywhere All At Once_ and even _Crazy Rich Asians,_ I wish more people would consider the _cultural_ (specifically Chinese) aspects of the films, because they’re so multilayered. But I’d also hope people could do that _without_ sinophobia, which is still-worrying enough-more and more normalized… Finally though, I’m really excited by all the stop-motion horror and the historical dramas on this list too! My experience in film studies has me in classes on occult cinema and essay films this semester, and both these types of films fit the themes of my classes. I actually looked into the possibility of animated essay films in my first assignment for the essay film class, and one of the movies I chose was _Waltz with Bashir,_ so it’s cool to see Ari Folman back with more animated content! I’d actually considered some of these stop-motion horror films for my occult cinema class, especially considering our last week was on puppets (we did _Street of the Crocodiles_ that week, and I really enjoyed that short). But in the end I stuck with my donghua brain rots-I’m planning on writing my final essay on occulting history with _White Cat Legend_ aka《大理寺日志》and _Link Click_ aka《时光代理人》and then the Japanese film, _Belladonna of Sadness._ Nevertheless, I was really excited by all the stop-motion horror of 2022, and I’m excited by all the other films coming out in 2023. Fingers crossed for more amazing films!

I usually watch your worst to best videos to find allot of obscure content I've never heard of that actually looks really good and if you put more videos out on that type of stuff it could spread more notoriety during the year that these smaller or just less known projects probably need.

I really hope there is a sequel to "The Sea Beast", because I loved all the character moments and subtle interactions, but was majorly disappointed about the somewhat heavy-handed ending. Especially in regards to Captain Crow, one of the best tragic characters in Animation. "Anne Frank" really was great, but please remember: It's not the "German refugee crisis", it's an "European refugee crisis" only somewhat tied to German political influence in the EU (that, and the Anne Frank-house is in the Netherlands 😊 ). And yeah, "Wendell and Wild" really suffered from a disjointed narrative and a bit too much political subtext for what is essentially a Coming-of-Age-story for Kat.
