If Loid meant it as joke then it's funny (it's funny either way) but I think since Twilights' childhood was so messed up and the fact that he was trained at a young age meant that he thinks that buying this young girl a pistol is normal. So it's kind of sad in that sense.

One thing with these high society schools is their image, its not enough to be smart but students (and to some degree their families) also live a life that meets the standard. The show takes place in a time period where proper families are expected to be nuclear families with exactly one mom, exactly one dad and one to three kids. That being said, they don't care as much if one of the parents are not the original biological parent, one of the parents can have passed away, but they expect the remaining parent to remarry and establish the look of the typical nuclear family. They probably won't immediately reject a student from a single parent family, but they will be evaluated much worse compared to a family with two parents.

While this is supposedly the late 1980s (I think 89 shows up somewhere) if you look at the tech and the MC's childhood memories (likely WWII) the this is more like the 1960s. In the 1960s you were kind of weird if you were a single parent.
