Being somewhat new to Whiskey I was wondering if its best to add a small amount of water to anything 100+ proof if drinking neat? Do you recommend using the lower end (80 proof) for cocktails? Thank you.
@acn15803 жыл бұрын
Depends a LOT on who you ask, but the general consensus is that you can release some extra flavors and aromas by adding a little water. Try it for yourself and see if it's something you enjoy. Personally I like a higher proof in things like Old Fashioneds and Manhattans so that the whiskey stands up to the dilution and the other ingredients. There's a lot of affordable Bottled-In-Bond stuff out there for cocktail mixing, and of course Wild Turkey 101. I think most people recommend 80 proof stuff for mixing not because it's better but because it's cheaper, and you want to enjoy your expensive whiskey neat. But again, try both, see what you like.

You touched on it but I got a question. Given its relatively early in the year, how do you know what release or from WHEN you are drinking? Is that even a question about large “commercial” distilleries? ie how MIGHT 2 bottles of 4 Roses Small Batch differ if one comes from a small ABC store in Utah and the other from a high traffic store like a Liquor Barn in Kentucky? How might a bottle of a single barrel bought in January differ from one bought in December? (Might be worth a separate episode!)

great question. there are a few label and glass clues, such as stamps at bottom of glass and the laser codes on some brands. but really, it's not disclosed like it used to be. and i don't care what anybody says, that matters. we've lost label transparency and the industry doesn't really seem to care. that used to mean something to distillers!

I was very recently surprised by a friend who brought me a bottle of Journeyman Distillery's Featherbone Bourbon, and I must say, I was impressed, especially since I tend more to the higher rye content, and less so the wheated ones. However, I discovered a bit more, that they're basically a grain to glass (bottle) operation, and predominately (possibly 100%, not sure) organic...yes so well done there. It was nice to see "handcrafted" "small batch" with state of distilling and bottling on the label (all right there on site in Michigin), plus the batch and bottle numbers, fantastic!

One aspect of all these "lists" that is rarely addressed is price. I do realize price can vary somewhat for several reasons, but there should be ..some.. indicator. I would propose the use of dollar signs as the indicator. Meaning a budget/cheap bourbon get one $. Something, say. . . in the $40-75 get two $$, something from $76-120 get $$$ and so on up to five dollar signs for those exclusive bourbons above, say $200.
@FredMinnick3 жыл бұрын
I’ve done a few of those. But the problem with pricing is it drastically varies. What is standard SRP may have a 20% distributor increase that is passed onto retailers who pass onto consumers. Alcohol is not like technology or general goods, where prices can be fixed by creators. It’s highly regulated and there are still a lot of unsavory people in the system . That said you’re right, a solid price list would be cool.
@Cyberdactyl3 жыл бұрын
@@FredMinnick Thanks for replying Fred. That's why I suggested such a wide range for each dollar sign. I fully understand how the price can range even from one month to the next at my local ABC store. The main reason I suggested such is so I don't have to bother even considering a bourbon if it is wildly out of my budget. I am sure there are some really desirable selections, but if they are north of $100 I really don't care if they make me ten years younger, I'm not buying them.

Great content! If you play it at 1.5x, it sounds like a typical speed!

Wait. Am I a slow talker? Lol

@@FredMinnick Haha, yea, but that's okay! Everyone has their own style, and KZbin makes it easy for everyone to play things at their pace. For me, I think this vid at 1.5x sounds normal (for the conversations I'm used to). 1.75x was a tad too fast for me.

On the comment about whether single barrels should be disqualified as bottled-in-bond, it does seem like a loophole around the "same distilling season" part of the bottled-in-bond definition (one barrel can't be from more than one distilling season). It's always seemed to me that bottled-in-bond is a test of a distiller's skill and consistency, because the bottled-in-bond rules prevent the use of the blender's art to fill out a flavor profile by adding whiskey from carefully selected special barrels. To make a good, consistent bottled-in-bond, it must be necessary for the whiskey maker to produce very consistent barrels of whiskey, year in and year out.
