You missed out the absolute nightmare of adoption on Unifi - when it works well it's great, but when it doesn't, boy you'd better be ready and willing to roll your sleeves up and get down and dirty with the command line interface. Also, Ubiquiti do have a habit of rolling out updates either before they are ready or with breaking changes that can (and do) bork your installation. I lost a whole day solving mine Unifi network when upgrading the controller software to V6.x

What do you think is missing from the TP Link system? I'm kind of sold on it at this point minus the additional maintenance work vs a consumer grade router.

A couple of things caught my eye on your product selections: 1. Omada EAP225 vs UAP-AC-Pro: A proper comparison with the $149 Ubiquiti AP would be the AC1750 EAP265 HD at $130; at least they are both AC1750. A better match for the EAP225 would have been the U6-Lite-US. The MSRP of $99 gives you WiFi 6 capability and still faster speed (1500 vs 1350). 2. I'm not sure why you went with the old-gen Security Gateway. The USG is considered at end-of-life (a Gen 2 unit is due Soon), and Ubiquiti recommends one of the Dream Machines instead. Yes, the UDM Pro is a great piece of hardware, but serious overkill for nearly any home application. And speaking of the Dream Machine... The non-Pro Dream Machine is a compact all-in-one unit that appears to do everything your $298 TP-Link setup does, and has an MSRP of $299. I have to say "apparently", since TP-Link is not very open about the specs on the Omada line. And 3. You don't need the $99 Cloud Key. The software is free, and has been "Dockerized" by several people, including Linuxserver. You definitely an "apples to oranges" comparison here. Maybe it was the lack of coffee... ;)
@TechnoDadLife
@TechnoDadLife 3 жыл бұрын
You didn’t watch the video to the end where I compare the Dream machine also. It is an even worse deal. As I said in the video, I was going for a direct comparison, so Omada is just releasing their WiFi 6 ap, but I didn’t have a price. So far though, they put all their prices under Unifi by quite a large margin. The biggest Unifi price difference is cameras. Unifi charges double for their cameras. Unifi is just very expensive for what it is. They are coasting on their past reputation.
@DeliberateGeek
@DeliberateGeek 3 жыл бұрын
@@TechnoDadLife To be fair, you compared the Dream Machine Pro at the end, not the lower end Dream Machine. I'm not terribly familiar with the Omada line, but it would seem to me that the $299 Dream Machine would replace the router, access point, and controller. Also, without the access point, there's no need for POE and depending on your wired connection needs, you may not even need the switch as the Dream Machine has a pretty solid AP built in. Having said all that, there are valid use cases where the flexibility of separate devices is more useful, which makes the Omada line an interesting option from a pricing perspective.

I couldn't agree more. I recently setup my home networking with 3 EAPs 245 and TP-SG 2008P Switch and awaiting shipment of TL 605 Gateway. This entire projected costed me half of what unifi would have costed me. The ui is like exact replica of Unifi and functions about the same. TPLINK is going to crush the Unifi market if they continue like this.

For those watching this video in 2022, Ubiquiti has the Dream Router for $200, which does it all. Router, 4 port (2 are 802.3af POE) switch , Wifi AP, integrated cloud controller with 128GB internal storage, and a SD card for additional storage. It also supports IDS/IPS via the Unifi Controller. The only substantial downsides are: if you want more switch ports, more powerful POE (if 802.3af doesn't cut it for you), and finally users report it caps out at around 700-800 mbps inbound on the WAN instead of full Gigabit due to the weaker CPU they used. Still, it's a great deal. They sell out very quickly though. Ubiquiti puts them up for sale randomly Monday - Saturday between 8:05-8:15am EST. Middle of the month tends to have higher volume. They usually sell out very quickly (30m or less).

I tried the tplink products in my parents house and at first they seemed fine but all 3 aps in the house are now dropping WiFi through the whole house. I replaced 1 and 3 months later and it started doing the same thing. I think the software is fine and the router is good but the aps don’t have good reliability since I now have 4 devices all having the same issues. Also have tried the managed and unmanaged switches and they work fine. The UniFi networks I put up for my customers I have no such problems, have only had one Poe switch fail due to lightning strike at customers house.

Wow, and you didn't even need to mention any of the massive state of a mess that Ubiquiti currently is in (consistently buggy firmware, pulling features from their cloud key to force you into their cloud, ironically just after their cloud has been hacked, ...). Ubiquiti has apparently been investing into youtube influencers rather than quality control and development, so it's really great to see videos like this one that mention alternatives. I so much wanted to like my Unifi network and I really like the looks of the UDM (what other router do you actually want to put on display in your living room?), but my entire user experience is pointing me away from Unifi. But where to? Maybe TP-Link? Could you say something about cloud vs local? Are you dependent on the TP-link cloud or can everything be managed locally? If you were to find five flaws with TP-Link, what would these be?
@TechnoDadLife
@TechnoDadLife 3 жыл бұрын
Tp-link you manage your cloud locally and you can use a docker to do it. Or just manage each device through their web interface. I set up this system in my father house and can monitor with my phone. For my new to me house, I am installing an Aruba Instant On switch and APs. I like that the web interface shows just enough and not to much. I also can switch to local control and have things as complicated as I want. For my router, I will be using PfSense on a mini pc that has two Ethernet ports. Wiring will be cat 6 and I will have fiber going to my office/studio, so I can be ready for 40g in my house.
@christophhaug
@christophhaug 3 жыл бұрын
@@TechnoDadLife So you prefer Aruba Instant On over TP-Link? Could you explain why? Also: I learned the hard way that if you want your unifi router (UDM) work properly, you need to throw out all non-Unifi switches and APs and replace them with Unifi ones. I was kinda assuming that the same would be the case with other network controllers, like Omada or Aruba. But are mixing Aruba with pfSense. So that works fine? Is it only Ubiquiti that are trying to build their own Apple-type ecosystem that sucks you in and never lets you go?

Be careful with TP-Link. Some of their gear doesn't handle VLANs properly. I found this out the hard way with an access point and others discovered it with some switch models. Multicast packets can leak from the main LAN to the VLANs, which make it impossible to use IPv6 on a VLAN and can also cause some problems with IPv4. After I replaced the TP-Link AP with Unifi, the problem went away.

@@Statek63 It wasn't FUD for me. I had that problem with a TL-WA901ND access point. With it, the IPv6 router advertisements from the main LAN would leak into the VLAN that I used for my guest WiFi. This meant I couldn't run IPv6 on that VLAN, as devices would wind up with the wrong address. The problem doesn't happen with my Unifi AP. I contacted TP-Link support about that problem and 1st level said it was supposed to work that way. 2nd level agreed it was a problem, but no fix was forthcoming for my version of the AP. But it’s not really the same system... unify has stronger security measures and more options for vlans and multiple Ssd... you can also go with with cheaper alternative wired security camera options that have their own recorder

The stronger security measures and vlans are the router part. Switch to PF sense and then you have something more powerful than what you have now.

The USG3 *is* pretty slow, if you enable IDS/IPS as it will throttle speeds down to 80mbps. I have the USG 4 Pro... It does not throttle my 150mbps connection. In fact, I typically get around 200mbps. Even if I were to enable IDS/IPS... it would throttle it to 250mbps. Plenty fast. I'm quite happy with my USG-4-Pro. I got it used for only $120. =) If I ever get a gigabit internet, I guess I'll upgrade to a UDM PRo.

OMG, please do not compare Omada to Ubiquiti UniFi... Please, also TP-Link technicians with whom I spoke admit they cannot barely be compared!

@@mosey4650 as the same compared to saying that Omada is better upon a price basis. Do you need some data? VLAN are very fragile: I contactedTP-Link because of a problem of a customer of mine wasn't able to navigate through an expressly created VLAN for guests in his office. The technician I already mentioned said that there are problems. Also, the firmware (as tech said!) are still several betas but aiming to a very robust one, but that is what is since the last year and a half... The habit of copying UBNT interface, as if they do want be UBNT with the tast of Taiwanese food. And so on. I do not say that they do not work, but, please, comparisons must be done more seriously.

Unifi APs besides the HD are all mediatek cpus, ALL tp link aps are qualcomm which is the same CPU offered in the unifi HD, better firmware and offers wave 2 in all of there APs. So the techs where right they "cannot barely be compared".

@@Statek63 call TP-Link, and ask them. CPUs are not the only part of a whole to be considered upon a use in everyday life. I use TP-Link, Ubiquiti, HP, Aruba... The point is that this video IS NOT honest if you compare two makers saying the price is the point to consider one better than the other, while the comparison is in how the devices must work and render your security / work / reliability THE point.
