Elan, I'm sorry, but in this case you (mislead by Crutchfield) are giving wrong information: the RZ-70 DOES HAVE INDEPENDENT subwoofer outputs (otherwise it'd not be able to get the Dirac Live Bass Control Multi-channel option). $2800 for the RZ70 with an amplifier section that can only garner a THX Select certification? That's just sad. Buy an RZ50 and a separate 11 channel amplifier and you will have a better system. If you're powering your speakers externally, use an Integra control amp, instead of an Onkyo amplified receiver. You're paying for features you're not using, but that still add more THD (which isn't as simple, or clear-cut as you imply.) Also, if you do use internal power, just look at the difference in the amplifiers inside of the receivers to see what you're paying for. It's not just the power rating, but the build quality, type of amp, etc. This is why a Pass Labs class-A amplifier will cost a lot more than an Emotiva class A/B of the same "power rating (RMS.) Sure, the RZS50 is cheaper, and offers a lot of the same features, which make it a better bargain. PS, Crutchfield is ALWAYS overpriced, and charge MSRP for everything. I can buy an RZ50 right now, BNIB for about $800 by just shopping around a llittle.

Can I use any stereo receiver ( like Sony STR DTH190 ) as an external amp to pair with this for the 7.2.4 set up ? Thank you in advance.
@ealanosborne Жыл бұрын
Yes, technically you can, but there may be unwanted issues that you’ll have to deal with, like always needing to turn on the receiver and stereo amp manually, since the DH190 in particular doesn’t have a trigger input to automatically turn on when the receiver turns on, like a true external amp would have. Also there’s the volume difference - having to match the volumes of each unit - and unwanted audio processing that the stereo receiver might add to the signal, unless the stereo amp has a “pure direct” mode, adding no processing whatsoever. In a pinch, it’s okay, but not advised. I sometimes use a Peachtree Nova300 in my system because it’s a stereo integrated amp that has “home theater bypass” mode which integrates seamlessly into a larger system, and also has a trigger input.

And of course in those few years time the landscape will change yet again. For some use cases - let’s say maybe septuagenarian or beyond boomers ( the cohort in which my date of birth places me) with no gaming or even physical media requirements - WISA or some likely successor may make enough technical headway to be a viable alternative. Depending on room layout, even advanced wireless connectivity sound bars / multichannel systems such as the Nak Dragon could be very attractive for those less than anal about surfing the bleeding edge of FOMO. I’d still be inclined towards physical discrete in ceilings for the overhead effects bubble, which as much as I’m not a fan of all of their speakers I’ve heard so far, Sonos’ ecosystem delivers great flexibility. No amount of power, signal processing/EQ or number of speaker channels will obviate the need to get the room dialed in first; for most of us there’s always some compromise - it’s just a matter of pick your poison.

However, I had a very difficult time with the Dirac Live software and was unable to optimize the calibration curves that I was expecting... When contacting Audio Advice for tech support, I could never reach anybody through phone support, despite leaving numerous voice messages... I also contacted Onkyo technical support as well, but they also weren't able to provide any real support... Unfortunately, as much as I was hoping the experience with the RZ50 would meet my expectations, I was very disappointed, to say the very least, but mostly because of my negative experience with Dirac Live... Needless to say, I ended up returning the Onkyo TX-RZ50 back to Audio Advice within the 30-day return policy... I also found out months later after returning the RZ50, I came across several KZbin videos that recommend purchasing the Mini DSP Umik-1 when running the Dirac Live software, but unfortunately, I wasn't aware of that at the time and assumed running the Dirac Live software with the included puck mic from Onkyo would be compatible, but I found out the hard way the included puck mic is only compatible with the Dirac Live basic version which is built-in with the receiver...At any rate, I was also very disappointed with the Dirac Live automatic built-in function as well... Fast forward, I went on to purchase the Denon AVR-X4700H directly from Denon which had a sale price of $1299 just prior to being discontinued before the release of the new Denon AVR-X3800H and AVR-X4800H receivers... What I found stands out from Denon over Onkyo is my Denon AVR-X4700H includes 2 independent subwoofer outputs whereas the Onkyo RZ50 dual sub outputs are not independent from one another... I also had a much more pleasant experience with setting up and running Audyssey room correction over Dirac Live, as it was much easier to understand the interface whether running the automatic version directly through the AVR-X4700H or optional Audyssey MultEQ-X app software for giving end users greater control over calibration parameters and more detailed information about their room acoustics. In the end, I've been very pleased with the Denon AVR-X4700H during the past 2 years and in my honest opinion, it provides the best bang for the buck performance over the competition, hands down and offers more features!

I believe that the RZ 70 is worth the extra money. I have seen it on sale for $2,299. For those that are going to use the internal amplifiers, it will be worth the extra power for the Home Theater set ups.

@ealanosborne Жыл бұрын
When the RZ50 is on sale, it’s a better bargain than the Cinema 50. I think the punchy THX cinema sound I prefer better than the smoother Marantz sonic signature, since it’s made to be a very nice music player too. 🤷♂️

Hmmm…well, they are very comparable. I still like the THX certification and overall cinema signature sound of the RZ50, but with such a price difference in your region, the x3800h is still great. Support for 4 subwoofers and Dirac Live is great (although Dirac costs extra).

How does the sound of the Integra 5.4 compare to the RZ50? I am 50% music 50% video so I am looking for great sound from my receiver. Anyone know the answer?
@ealanosborne Жыл бұрын
What I’ve gathered from watching other reviews is that Onkyo is the home theater leaning brand, Pioneer leans a little more movies AND music, and Integra is better suited for home integration/network home theater systems (since they’re all under the same umbrella). So maybe the Pioneer LX505 would be good for your hybrid movie/music needs? 🤷♂️

In Australia the RZ50 costs $2,700 AUD and the RZ70 costs $5,000 AUD Almost double the RZ50 price even if I bought the RZ70 through Amazon Australia, price including shipping and import taxes, it would still cost $3,927 AUD. Certainly cheaper than $5K but still vastly more expensive than the RZ50 at local price which btw would incl local warranty if needed.

HDMI Sub and main comes in handy if you have a TV and a projector in the same room. One difference (and an important one) you didn't talk about is the weight difference between the RZ50 (30.9lbs) and the RZ70 (48.5lbs). There may simply be better quality components inside other than just the extra amp channels and 2 optical and coax inputs :)

I don't trust the build quality of rz50 bcoz 9-11 channel but about 13 kgs only like other model of denon/marantz 13 kgs only, unlike other brands build like a tank.
@GlassWolfLH Жыл бұрын
@@marconista5390 The lighter weight comes from the use of class-D "digital" amplification these days (ala Pioneer Elite) versus older larege toroidal transformers to drive big class A/B amplification channels. I saw this weightg shift moving from an NR1010 to an RZ3100, when they made the switch at Onkyo from A/B to D.

AR's review of the RZ50 is what helped me make up my mind. Also, as you've pointed out, it's the best bang for the buck on a receiver WITH pre-outs. My basement theater is 'on hold' so I decided to upgrade my Den/TV room. It's currently a Yamaha 5.1 only receiver. I was looking for something to do 5.1.4 with, this one was the winner! I'm adding 4 height (on wall) channels onto the ceiling and can't wait to hear what I've been missing! The basement will be a 9.4.4 setup, so this won't be moving when I resume the basement theater. I am not sure yet whether the RZ-50 will cut it for "power", but this is a pretty small room, so I doubt I'll need to add any external amps. MAYYYYBE for the LCR speakers... but I haven't tried it without yet, so that remains to be seen..err... heard ;)
@off_key88 Жыл бұрын
Also, some people say the lack of "Auro 3D" support is a deal breaker. I looked through my media, 4k blu rays, I don't see any with Auro 3D soundtracks? Besides... I don't know that my 5.1.4 setup would work in Auro anyway... I say "MEH"!!

It's just hard to find a surround processor with hdmi 2.1 that's affordable. I found a good deal on a Parasound 5 channel amp and am trying to find something to pair it with.

It’s been my experience with the IOTA AVX17 (which is a budget preamp) that having a preamp processor still has (IMO) a slight edge over AVRs. Just a bit close to the actual cinema experience.

I'll explain how I personally use the MAIN/SUB HDMI outputs. I have both connected to the same tv. My dumb TCL tv doesn't have 4k@120Hz on the eARC HDMI port, so I use the MAIN as eARC only and all video output routed out of SUB to a 4k@120hz hdmi port on the tv. Things get pretty wonky when you do this. I had to disable CEC to make this work because I end up in a black screen loop with the avr and tv switching endlessly.
