I was deciding between the DENON X4800H and the ONKYO RZ50. Although I wanted the Deonon, the price wouldn't come down. Then one day on Amazon, the price for the ONKYO went down to $800. I pulled the trigger because I knew that was the lowest I would see on any of the 2 receivers. So far, I've run the calibration tool and it sounds pretty good to me. I'm sure I can do more tweaks with it but for now, I'm digging with what this machine is cookin'!

I have not done Dirac on my RZ70 yet, but I’ve read that the input should be an unused port eg dvd and then more accurate readings will be measured. I’ll try that out once I do the Dirac.

Such a solid review. I was struggling with the mic that came with the system as well. I got it to work but was only able to get 9 positions. UMIK-1 is on the way. Thank you. Oh btw, I don't use Atlona anymore. They're stuff is too problematic. They're not the company they used to be. I cut over to fiber optic HDMI cables and I'm able to run everything with no handshake issues at all over super long distances. Now, whenever I have an HDMI issue, it has to do with my LG C1 TV. If I power cycle it, the problem goes away for a few weeks then slowly creeps back. Your home and audio racks are full on gorgeous. I put my amps on a rack from Costco out in my garage. Keep the heat from everything out there.

I did a lot of research and decided that an Atlona was the only thing that would give me everything I wanted. So I mostly based all video on Ethernet hdbase cable runs. @Upscaled_HT
@Upscaled_HT 18 күн бұрын
I would imagine you have to be pushing it quite hard while going sub 4 ohms to have it go into protection mode. I probably recommend throwing an AC infinity fan on top if you know you're driving low impedance speakers and high volume levels.
@robwr737
@robwr737 13 күн бұрын
That probably shouldn't happen, check all your speaker wires/connectors.if you are using standard speaker wire twisted into posts and not something crazy expensive like XLR. If you have any bad wire or little bits not perfectly twisted tight and poking out the side of binding posts or loose in a banana plug it will cause all sorts of problems ! People forget this and it's rarely mentioned.

Dirac is definitely glitchy. You got some learning to do, if you are going to commit to this room correction software with custom target curves. target curtains and double checking results of the curves on REW. Especially if you upgrade to DLBC, and eventually ART. Side note: I cant believe how quickly your rec room speakers roll off at. Falls off a cliff at 120 hz.

Great video. Most detailed AVR vid I’ve ever watched; the hook up in two different types of rooms did it for me. Cheers. Maybe it wasn’t the fan noise because the UMIK 1 is a lot more sensitive than the stock mic. I’m betting the stock mic was faulty or more likely the tablet could not maintain the connection speed needed for Dirac to do its thing.

I have this same receiver. I bought it back when it first came out and paid double what you got it for! Awesome price for a great receiver! However, I do have some complaints which I can share with you. 1) The receiver's relays are loud, and it likes to use the relays a lot. 2) When watching dolby digital content and anytime you pause, rewind/fastforward, or anything that pauses the sound the receiver takes forever to get the sound back. You can hear the relay kick off and then finally kick back on when the sound comes back. Usually takes about 5 seconds. Its annoying but not unbearable. Just note that when you are pausing a movie you will have to probably rewind a bit so that you dont miss any dialogue. Im hoping that Onkyo fixes this through a firmware update if enough people keep complaining to them. I have no idea why they would kick off the relay everytime it senses no audio input. 3) And this is big COMPLAINT, the hdmi board is faulty! Its a known issue that the strm box hdmi port if you use it to plug in a smart tv dongle like fire stick or nvidia shield, chromecast, etc that it will constantly loose signal. The work around that i found on a forum and that i use is to plug in your streaming box into another hdmi port and re-assign "strm box" into that port. So in other words do not use hdmi port 4 (strm box) to plug in any of your streaming media boxes. You might have to do this a couple times until you find a good port that does not mess up. For some reason the hdmi ports do not like Stream Boxes. Forums say that the HDMI board is a bad one used from previous Onkyo's. Maybe Onkyo has fixed the hdmi board issue with these latest batch, but just something to keep an eye out on if you have issues with video cutting in and out. I thought it was my hdmi cable and i went thru 10 hdmi cables and even purchased 5 different types of hdmi optical cables thinking it was my cable. It was not! Things i do love about it: 1) Dirac is amazing! 2) The menu is amazing and very easy to navigate and adjust different settings (unlike sony!). 3) The future proofing is amazing with all 8k hdmi ports (if the hdmi board doesnt go bad). 4) The amount of inputs is just faboulus. The ability to add extra channels with the pre-outs is amazing as well. 5) The quick info menu is awesome, which lets you see what the receiver is outputting is very helpful. 6) The ability to change the tones, loudness, and bass level as well as different music vs movie sound profiles quickly right on the remote is something that all receivers should do! The pros in my opinion outweigh the cons and I would definitely purchase this receiver again, especially at $800! lol. The receiver just takes some patience and some workarounds but overall is amazing. Huge noticeable sound difference over my Sony and Denon Receivers! I returned my Denon 8300h after trying out the Onkyo RZ50. Its that good!

They mostly fixed the hdmi board problems a few years ago. You should be fine now with Onkyo and new ownership and marketing push means they are going to be better at customer service/ Warranty replacement or repair but it's unlikely they will have many failures. Any product from any manufacturer will have small batches or units that do fail, that's the nature of any electronics but the failure rate for Onkyo should be very low now. I had a bunch of failures way back when also, but still have 2 working units one for over 6 years running 5 channels in my bedroom. Time for an upgrade in power though so I want an RZ50 or 30/70 depending.

The lack of independent sub outs was a miss for this model. I really don't know why that wasn't included at this price point. I think many people looking at this level of receiver are either considering or already have dual subs. Unfortunately they cannot be managed independently and will be treated as a single summed output. This mostly defeats the purpose of advanced room correction like Dirac Live with Bass Control as it won't be able to optimize both subs for your room.

I also just got an RZ50 and had similar issues with the Dirac setup initially, but I found that once I used the software on a laptop and went through calibrating the levels, it then worked flawlessly. Same mic. Seems to me that the app is harder to use, and using the full software works well, and doesn't require buying a calibrated mic. The cable length was an issue for me too - I wish they would supply a longer cable. The extended cable might be picking up more noise, so if anyone needs an extension, i would recommend keeping it as short as possible. If you really need more length, then using a real calibrated mic with a balanced (XLR) cable is probably the way to go.

Love the THX "Digitally Mastered" audio cue in the beginning.... I'm still watching DVDs that have that pre-feature intro! I really wanted this AVR, and as a once-diehard Onkyo fan, it's what I had my heart set on to replace our old TX-SR605. However, a couple of things stopped me, starting with the way this amp would be overkill for our needs. We're only running a 5.1 setup without overhead channels or speaker top modules, and our surround speakers are already in the ceiling. So Atmos would be lost on us, as would the extra channels this thing powers. I also wouldn't use Dirac, as I don't care for auto setup routines or room correction, so that's another redundant feature for me. I also absolutely HATE - and this is a big one for me, and what drove me to a Denon AVR-X2800 - the fact that the Onkyos don't show the input name and sound mode at the same time on the front panel anymore. This was a ridiculous omission, especially given the available screen space these big RZs have (even the lesser NR models), and even though people have complained to Premium Audio Group/Voxx/Sharp about it, nothing's been done to change it. They also dropped the incredibly helpful IntelliVolume feature. Aside from not being able to fit the RZ50 in our cabinet (I think we can squeeze the 30 in), I don't believe, I just feel like this AVR is overkill for us. Would it make sense to buy this model to power a 5.1 arrangement if I'm sold on its aesthetics and build quality alone?

You can experiment with your overhead speakers and setup a 3.1.2 vs a regular 5.1. At msrp, I would say it’s overkill but at 800, it would be impossible to find a better receiver.

@Upscaled_HT Thanks very much for your reply. Indeed, I've been advised about repurposing my existing surrounds for Atmos use, but I don't really understand how the whole 3.1.2 thing works. Plus, our two surrounds are currently directly overhead of our listening position - how would these be assigned to Atmos channels, exactly? This room won't accommodate two ear level speakers on stands near the couches, so we can't really do a traditional Atmos layout with five ear level speakers and then two or four overheads (our front left/right mains are big Polk RTi12 towers). With regard to the RZ50 - if I could get it at $800, you think it's not really "wasted" on a simple 5.1 setup? Even if I don't set it up with Dirac? Would something like the RZ30 make more sense in my case?

It appears you did not load your unique UMIK-1 (90deg) calibration file. You will not get accurate results without loading this file. Nobody should assume they know what they are doing based upon previous calibration software, Dirac requires a good bit of reading. At minimum, the shelf should be adjusted.
@Upscaled_HT
@Upscaled_HT 10 күн бұрын
I use the calibration file for rew so I’m aware of that. Dirac should prompt the user about this honestly. They are including Dirac with mainstream gear and I don’t find it very user friendly at all. I’ll have to figure out how load the calibration file and re run dirac. Arc genesis is significantly easier to use.

The denon by far. Not crippled with a single lfe, more flexibility to use if internal amps, way more stable and of you add Dirac, it has no issues like on the Onkyo

@@shaolin95 To be honest, we replaced an old Onkyo TX-SR605 with a Denon AVR-X2800 and I don't care for the Denon's house sound compared to the Onkyo (with both receivers running no room correction or EQ). I want to return to Onk, but there are too many features omitted that I just can't get behind.
@MikeMargolis-j8f
@MikeMargolis-j8f 18 күн бұрын
I also can't get over the difference in size between the 3800 and RZ50, which everyone always compares; the 50 just dwarfs the Denon, as most Onkyos do when comparing them to Denons (save for the flagships). The 3800 is basically the same size as the 2800, and I just can't get past that... the RZ AVRs look like giant power amps sitting next to the under-4000 series Denons.

They were most reliable gear that I’ve ever used is Mcintosh gear but it’s extremely expensive. For the price that I got my RZ 50 I really can’t complain if it dies after five years, but I’m holding out hope that it will last longer.. my other RZ 830 has about five years on it and it’s going strong.
