Here is a list of all the BEST Writing Craft books I have read and think you should read too! As writers, we should be constantly improving our craft, and one of the ways to do so is by reading books on writing, both to learn new things and to be inspired and motivated to keep at it. Let me know down in the comments what are some of your favourite writing books and why 😊

The Anatomy of Story is very advanced book, glad to hear you mention that, because most people praise it without warning new writers. I wouldn't recommend that book to beginners either.

As an older but new writer, I started The Anatomy of Story....and then gently put it in the to be read later pile. Luckily Save the Cat is also on my shelf.

Great video! It was just what I needed! Additional rec: Writing the Cozy Mystery (Nancy J Cohen), is a great and short book going into the cozy mystery, how it usually looks and what that audience expects. I've heard others talk about "The anatomy of Story", but I think you explaining it here got me swayed that I need to try to give it a try. And I'll also probably try to find "the first five pages a look" too. Thanks! Personally, I have mixed feelings on "save the cat". I think it can probably be very invaluable, and I found the stuff about character motivation and pacing really invaluable, but personally I found it a bit too restrictive (the beat sheet specifically), but I definitely agree that it can be a good starting off point, and a kinda general frame for what kind of stories work.

I agree about Save the Cat, personally for me I found it invaluable when I started, as I had already written a full draft without a proper outline/structure and boy did it show. So it really opened my eyes on what makes a satisfying story structure, so I re-wrote that draft following the 22 beat sheet and it transformed my book. I now use it as a loose starting point, but don't let it restrict me in any way.

Nice list! I would also recommend Story by Robert McKee. It's also a book on screenwriting but a lot of the advice still applies to novels and what I like about it is how it distills everything down into "principles", like "the principle of limits". Also I like your Pokeballs, lol

Thanks for the recommendation 😊 ! I've heard of it before, so might pick it up in the future.

There is a lot of good information. I think I will start with saving the cat. You always have vibrant nail colors in your videos. What its the name of the blue you are wearing? Is your Patreon page still active?
@IasminaEdina11 ай бұрын
Haha thanks, the shade is called aruba blue. And yes my Patreon is still active 😊

I have joined your patron page. You should give a mention at the beginning of your videos. People tend to lose interest toward the end, or pause the video and never get back to it. Plus, unless you bring it up most people won't even look.

Do you think your technical experience as a software engineer drips into your writing? Do you find yourself thinking as sentances as logic or the book layout as code structure?

I'm mainly interested to hear what books on craft you would NOT advice and why.

"The Heroine's Journey" by Maureen Murdock No idea why people even recommend it... Absolute trash.

Good idea, might make a video about that at some point 😊
