Best Budget 120hz PS5 Monitor

went down a deeeep, dark hole trying to find the best gaming monitor for the PS5 and emerged with the LG 32GN50T-B (AKA 32GN500B or 32GN550B). It supports 120hz or HDR, great contrast & deep blacks from the VA panel, huge size but still very sharp-looking 1080p resolution. I enjoy gaming on it a lot more than my old 4K Samsung U28E590. And the PRICE is insane for all this. There's no 4K 120fps monitor in existence so this is the next best thing.

I actually just returned the Samsung UJ59 bcus it can only get up to 4K in one port & it’s HDMI 1 for 1080. None of this one in the specs or manual. I found this out bcus my PS5 was saying that 4K was not supported in HDMI 1. This will be my first monitor purchase so I’m getting the LG Ultragear 32GP83B. Hey Justin I have 3 of these monitors connected to different game systems. I tweak em quite a bit to try and get the best performance for FPS. Did some digging and figure I would share something I found. These monitors will report to the the game system that it can do a variety of settings; including 4k at 60hz. I found that nice; but a little odd like the monitor isn't talking properly to the game system. With my Ps4 pro I found that when setting to 1080p I could not turn on Super Sampling. Said it wasn't available which was odd. Finally found that I had to turn off Free Sync and under the General settings I had to turn on HDMI Compatibility mode. Once I did that the monitor only reports proper settings to the game systems and I can enable Super Sampliing. So PS5 doesn't have a toggle for Super Sampling it will just automatically do it if the monitor and game system is agreeing on 1080p. I use to get ghosting with the "Faster" response setting and input lag. Once I turned on HDMI compatibility mode that has cleared up. I think once the monitor is talking properly to the game system the PS5 will turn on Super Sampling.

Got mine today. Pretty happy except for a cluster of irregular pixels an inch from the top and a little right of center AND a single dead pixel off to the left and a half inch from the top. High return hassle means I’m living with it for quite a while.

I've been rocking the same 1080p 240hz monitor for a while now. As a PC guy I think I'm expected to try and flex resolution numbers but I really do value frame rate over a sharper image any day. I have this monitor. It's pretty good. Don't sit to close or else you'll see pixels. I sit 3FT away and looks awesome. Colors are great for a VA, but don't pop like good IPS panel. Black background is actually black, with minimal backlight bleed & VA glow. Much preferred over IPS glow. Gets plenty bright, and also very dim. Viewing angles are decent, some color/gamma loss when viewing off center. No speakers, but there's a headphone jack for external speakers. Only con with the monitor, and it's due to VA panel flaw. There's some ghosting/smearing when there's movement from a dark object on a light background. Hit or miss on what causes it. I've noticed it on some 2D side scroll games. Motion blur is a little more noticeable than my TN panel of course, but it's good for a VA panel. I'm currently using it for PS4, and casually on PC. Good monitor. But be aware of the usual VA shortcomings.

This monitor is great on PC 165Hz , got it at Costco $209USD and Amazon wants $220 used LOL The brightness is fantastic as are the colors. NO GHOSTING ! Just sit back from it a little further. G-sync certified too. And of course Free Sync works great.

I have an LG 32UL500-W 4k 60, and when I hooked up my OG Xbox One to it, warzone looked like crap. My PS4 pro and my PS5, both set to 1080p resolution just as a comparison, looked awesome. The PS4 pro and PS5 boost mode on my old 37LG50 tv (from about 2007) actually looked really good as well. So I’m having to ask myself at this point “is waiting for availability and price drops on 4k 2.1 monitors worth it right now considering I have a 4k 60 monitor already, all I really want for my gaming needs is the higher frame rate?”

Unfortunately that monitor won't be able to handle the VRR for the PS5. PS5 requires an HDMI 2.1 input to support VRR. You can achieve 1440p 120hz, but you may still experience screen tearing if the frame rate dips. For PC gaming with display port VRR isn't an issue.

Personally I'd recommend LG 27GL850... can play 120fps at 1080p and downscale 4k image at 60hz so you can play both and the price for the monitor is great value. Downscaled image means it's at 2k which compared to 4k to the naked eye is no difference. Would never just recommend having 1080p.

I’m sure that monitor looks great too. But the 1080p at 120hz on a 1440p monitor is going to scale a bit funny. And it’s IPS which is better for a bright room - won’t have the deep blacks that a VA panel can do. The thing people don’t understand if they don’t come from a video background is that quality doesn’t come from the number of pixels - it comes from the quality of the image. Great quality 1080p video looks better than poor quality 4K. Or another way to say it is that if you take a video game on a really powerful PC and put all the quality settings to Ultra or Max and output at 1080p it will look better than putting settings on low or normal and outputting at 4K. The PS5 looks GREAT at 1080p compared to previous gen consoles because the quality is better. And things like ray tracing have nothing to do with resolution to make a better quality picture. People will be blown away by how good games can look at 1080p when textures and lighting are on point.

I'd just be digging through review sites to try and compare these as I haven't used them so I'll leave that up to you. However, I would say that IPS panels typically are the best all-rounders and good for colours so I'd aim at an IPS 4K monitor. Rtings is a great site for a lot of monitor reviews. They are my go-to.

You can technically but the PS5 is actually scaling down the 4K footage to lower resolutions to keep it running at 120fps. So even though the TV or monitor might think it’s getting a 4K signal, the resolution is being scaled. Sometimes even down to 960p.

My answer to this is the LG UG 27GN950. Literally zero compromises. 4K 144hz and 1ms reaction time. Doesn’t have HDMI 2.1 tough. But who even uses HDMI on Pc lol.

The whole point of this video though was for PS5 though so it’s like 3X the price and you’ll be stuck at 4K/60. And the GN950 is IPS which is fast but low contrast ratio at 1000:1 vs 3000-4000 on a VA so not as good for dark room gaming. Incredible monitor though for PC but just not great value for the PS5 specifically.

Just an FYI, you can get monitors that downscale from 4K instead upscaling from 1080p. This makes it so 1440p isn’t completely useless on the PS5 if you want a bit more resolution but still want to stick to a high frame rate.

The only thing is that the monitor won’t accept a 4K/120fps signal because it doesn’t have HDMI 2.1 so you’ll either have to pick 4K/60 or 1080p/120fps. In the future they might update the PlayStation to do 1440p/120fps which would probably fine over HDMI 2.0 but until then, I don’t think it would work sadly.

It’s a great 1080p monitor and it’ll look solid for Series X but if you’ve got more budget, I’d recommend the BenQ twins I reviewed on this channel. This one will still handle 4K just fine and look great doing it though.

1440p downscaling will still look better with 4K/60fps content coming in then 1080p, but because a 1440p monitor would need an HDMI 2.1 port to accept 4K/120fps (which none do have) so they can only do 4K/60fps in which case you'd be better off just getting a 4K monitor. And sending a 1080p/120fps signal into a 1440p monitor is a waste.

My friend bought an Samsung curved for $800 a couple weeks ago and the monitor does over 2160 p and it’s hdmi 2.1 and does 144hz

I think he's mistaken - to my knowledge there are still zero monitors in existence with HDMI 2.1. Did a quick Google search to see if that changed in the past couple weeks but still nothing I can find.

I got this monitor to upgrade from my 27” 4K viotek monitor that I got 3 years ago, sadly it wasn’t an upgrade. The LG has some sort of motion blur and is really annoying when playing fps games at 120 frames or very dimmed games.

Try playing on Faster instead of Fastest and then turn the 1ms off and on and see if there’s a difference. No motion blur or smearing on mine.

Ps5 need to update their system so they can play games on a 1440p monitor and have 1440p resolution options on their settings without losing frame rate. Majority of gaming monitors have great 1440p and refresh rate. For ps5 to not have the 1440p options is crazy to me.

Yeah, I agree. Although, I am playing my PS5 on a 1440p monitor at 1080p/120hz and it still looks fantastic, but I do wish it was 1440p native.

A but misleading I might say, please correct me, but PS5 does not support Freesync yet. So the 144 to 120 drop (synced) does not exist. You don’t need to have Freesync ON , on this monitor with PS5 because it’s not supported. You are getting 120 because you have the Cold War game on. The PS5 per say it’s not 120 , just 60hz, but I might say the 120 FPS games run at it locked. Maybe in the future the AMD Freesync will help but right not PS5 VRR it’s not enabled in the console. Also , this monitor is HDCP 1.4

The intention is not to be misleading, but it is to try and warn people that if you buy a monitor without FreeSync, some people are reporting that their PS5 doesn't work properly because the monitor can't drop down to 120fps and instead locks at 144hz and it messes it up. From all that I've read, monitors with FreeSync don't have this issue because they support VRR and it works out in the end. But yes, it's true that the PS5 doesn't support FreeSync (yet). However, in this case it's not about the PS5 - it's about the monitor. In the case of this one specifically, you can see right in the menu it detects 120fps and locks at 120hz. So it's trying to communicate that monitors that have FreeSync or Gsync are variable-refresh friendly and should work great with the 120fps coming out of the PS5. If they aren't FreeSync or Gsync, you could have issues.

@@JustinReves thanks for the reply! I indeed have this for one of my PS5 (the other has LG CX) and it does lock down on 120 for Fortnite and PS5 120 FPS games, but you can’t do 120 with HDR . My guess is this is because the frequencies are not supported by PS5 because it’s HDMI 1.4 and not 2.0 (the monitor) . Other than that , it let’s you use the 1ms MBR if Freesync is OFF. So knowing that Freesync is yet to be supported , the 1ms MBR , it’s a great option to play with . I would’ve love to see this monitor with hdmi2.0 at least to handle 120 HDR @1080p but hey, for the price in Costco is a bang !
