Some have pointed out that the X1DII has a eshutter capable of 1/10000. This is true as of a firmware update, but it was not true at the time I completed my evaluation here.

I went with the 50R about a year ago - the X1D not having a shutter was a deal breaker for me. I shoot almost primarily old, adapted lenses, so I needed a body that could use those to the best ability. I don't want to have to deal with the negative effects of an electronic shutter all the time.

Love my X1D ii, 3 lenses in I am heads over heels about it. People's minds explode when they see me in the wild with a Hasselblad. I love the range I can get with it, just the gradation I can capture with it and the wrapping of light around the subject its so awesome. Any equipment that inspires you to shoot is the one for you. It's different for everyone. For me its the Hasselblad.

@@rosetta-stxned still nothing u cant do in post with RGB curve to color match and u make a quick preset of the curve adjustment if u want it to look like a hasselblad so bad. besides youre gonna change HSL in post anyways since its gonna be shot in raw. different glass not a big deal unless u like pixel peeping 100% crops

@@szmulek different glass is a huge deal for rendition, flaring, sharpness , and contrast. There is a difference in images, even if it’s not huge. That being said, it’s not worth the extra money IMO

I use a Smallrig halfcase with the GFX 50r and it solves the grip issue perfectly and allows for easy use with a tripod in both portrait and landscape orientation. I am intrigued by Hasselblad’s colour science though and very much like the quest for in-camera perfection of colours and tonality. For the Fuji system, I am very much looking forward to the 80mm 1.7. I think that will be the perfect combo with the GFX50r. Looking forward to your in-depth videos on the Hasselblad lenses!

The hassy looks like something that belongs in the studio only. Whereas with the fuji, I'd still feel comfortable hitting the street with it. Also unrelated, I commented a few weeks back about moving from Sony to fuji. You along with a few other fuji KZbinrs really helped me decide on a camera and lens. Very Happy owner of an xt-3 and a 35 f/2. And happily done with Sony. Thank you for the great information that helped me find a camera Im excited to use. Fuji really is different.

Thanks for doing this video. I have, like you, been full format curious for some time. :) I did evaluate the Fujifilm 50r with one of the f2.8 lenses and did absolutely love it. I enjoy shooting Fujifilm and Leica for pleasure but I typically use Sony for my full frame portrait, landscape, etc serious projects. Context aside, instead of buying a Fujifilm 50r and appropriate starter glass, I opted to upgrade my Sony to A7riv && and a Sony 135mm f1.8 for roughly the same coin. While I feel I would have enjoyed the 50r more, I still have my XPro3 and Leica lenses to mess around with. In the end, the Sony 60mp and absolutely beautiful 135mm solves 90% of my higher res needs. I await the day the Fujifilm GFX 100 goes on sale along with some of those lenses.

I had both camera as well, and I have to say I got the 50r after seeing your video and I find much much deeper connection with the 50R it is honestly one of the best camera that I have ever used, it just makes you want to shoot , and the image quality is simply stunning ! 50R is simply amazing ! About the X1D on/off button This button has two functions cold and hot start/stop When turning on the camera that is completely shut down you have to make a long button press (a short press will not start the camera) the action is confirmed by the led lighting up at the back of the camera. Same to shut the camera completely down, one long button press. When you are in a shooting pause, you just make a short button press and the camera goes to sleep mode with almost no power consumption, when you want to take a frame you just make a short on button or release button press and the camera awakes without any lag. If you want to have full control of this function, best is to deactivate the auto sleep mode in the menu.

X1D camera control with buttons is most about first press, then choose with one of the wheels. values selection is shown on the rear screen or in the EVF when you scroll with the wheel Somme buttons ave double functions, with sort press and long press. This control method appeared to my too, weird and messy the first times I had the camera in the hands. After some weeks of use it appeared very confortable : few buttons that you can find immediately without searching or showing at them, while having the eye on the viewfinder. I too have cameras with a lot of dedicated buttons everywhere and the problem for me is to find the right button on the right place while having the eye on the viewfinder. For more complicated menu camera configurations you simply store them in the C1, C2, C3 memories that you select with the big round upper knob.

About the lack of flipscreen on the X1D. You can see the liveview image and press the shutter on your iPhone/iPad with the Phocus Mobile application that connects automatically to the camera when turned on.

As a Sony a9 shooter and Fuji xt’s and 100 I find Fuji for its price point someone comes near the hassy look but I’ve seen real large prints from all those and canons and specifically for portraiture the Hassy just has a magic look that has put it on my bucket list to own in the near future..great review btw mate👍

For me (having also a GFX 100), the main reasons I keep going back to my X1d ii are: 1) above all, its color. like you said, colors are just stunning. Skin tones are amazing, its just gorgeous. And that just saves tons of post processing workflow etc... Nothing beats it hands down. 2) the portability. Nothing beats that either 3) optics quality. 80mm 1.9, 30mm 3.5 are enough reason to get a x1D to shoot with them. Nothing compared today. Fuji is coming with a 30 and 80 as well but not as compact. So far nothing on the market that matches it. 4) Like Leica, the camera doesnt get in the way. My GFX 100 is great but man, so many options, menus, etc... too many choices, decision making...... All that gets int the way of shooting IMO.... And again SOOC colors being so awesome reduces the post processing and also doesnt get in the way. You dont have to think how you will edit etc...

Also, keep in mind the xcd lenses are much better than any lens Hasselblad produced before. Even the H. By miles. Believe it or not the AF on the X1 is still better when you come from H lol.... so personally I think the X system has a great future. If you shoot H6D, the X1D feels like a treat and it’s easy to integrate to your workflow. HB color is consistent across all their digital cameras. So now you have a much more portable HB for some location travel etc. I don’t think they suddenly decided to go after a whole new market with that system.

I am sold on the hasselblad system myself after a VERY long period where the H2 was my last camera I purchased. I still used my 500's shooting film but I am back with 2 XCD lenses, an X1D, and my favorite at the moment the 907x and CFV ii which I use regularly with the XCD 45P and on my 500 series cameras which is a fantastic shooting experience for all of the work I personally like to do.

I a gree and from my POV although comparable, the FUJI cannot compete with Hasselblad. You said it perfectly in "1)" the colors: The X1D (II) or X2D delivers these perfect neutral, yet sharp and authentic images. Color, shadow & highlights in perfect harmony. Fuji technically completely up to date, doesn't seem to be the right tool in a commercial setting. Like Leica, these two are either wedding photographer tools or someone who does reportage. The Hasselblad is the commercial B2B Camera.

1:34, yes, they do offer better cropping options, but don't forget, they also offer better NOT cropping options for many who never output to 3:2. If you do mostly 4:3, or even 1:1, you actually use all/more of those pixels you paid for.

Glad to see you back! I love the idea of owning a Hasselblad - because Hasselblad(!)... That being said, I have already decided, I won't buy any more cameras until I have saved up for a high end 35mm rangefinder. I guess medium format digital cameras for me, are to photography, what Formula 1 race cars are to cars in general (said the cyclist). Anyway, thank you for another very interesting video.

My favorite camera is the Hasselblad XPan. Nothing compares to it. I liked the DP0 (21:9) Quattro by Sigma, but prefer the older DP Merrell series for the Foveon Sensor. The Foveon on the Quattros is not the same.. Unfortunately, they do not make a 21:9 version for the Merrell, just have to crop it like that in Photoshop. Prefer the Fuji X series much more over Hassie these days.

Here in Norway you can purchase one GFX and GF45mm GF110mm for the same price as the Hasselblad alone. And if you take one Hassy lens with the Hassy, you can take two more GF lenses, in total 4 lenses and a camera, for the same price as the Hassy and one lens...

Even though these systems are great, I've been looking at older medium format cameras. Yes, the tech is a lot older but the resolution, depth and color, I think is still there. I saw a Leica S2 (37mp) with a 70mm 2.8 Leica lens with two batteries and CF card for $2800. I couldn't believe my eyes. Should have purchased it. My loss. Even some older digital Mamiya 645s, and Hasselblads are priced under $3000 with a lens and other accessories. You just have to continually be on the hunt on eBay to find these great deals. Nice vid as usual.

Hmm I think Fuji GFX has more affordable lenses so makes a lot differences when you buy into „fuller“ frame. But I would fancy a digital back on my Hasselblad 500cm. And use old Zeiss lenses 😍 proper medium.

I get that. I love the look I get with Portra 160 and my 500cm. It’s unrivalled in the overall look and the flextight scans are beautiful. Alt least in my taste. I hope Hasselblad is going further into their heritage. First step is the 907x. In the end an XCD-Camera like the X1d, but with the possibility to use it as a v-System digital back. I tried it and I was amazed. There is some mojo about Hasselblad which they seemed to have lost for a while. The only reason I won’t buy one is the price tag and the sensor size. Hope they‘ll do a 907hv where they use the larger sensor of the h6d. Or even a square one matching the 6x6 format. I don’t even care about megapixels. Everything above 50MP is enough for my taste. I just want the sensor size combined with the pixel-quality of low pixel density sensors. A 6x6 907x equivalent, where you can use HCD lenses stand alone and the v-System lenses with my 500cm would be my dream system.

Great review. Totally agree with on the OOC colors of the X1Dii. Best colors from any camera, I struggle to move one slider in LR. I ended up selling it though, couldn’t live with the lead shutter and terrible electronic one that not only creates banding, but terrible jello effect. Keep up the good work.

Having used both these cameras, although rented!. Just one thing that totally makes X1D II worth it over Fuji 50R/S. 16Bit RAW! The colours are out of this world and with right post processing techniques the 16Bit RAW files truly shine. The kind of highlight gradation it holds is truly astounding. 16Bit alone is worth the premium, the next MF camera price wise that shoots 16Bit is Fuji GFX 100, and that's roughly 10k.

It's only 14 bit raw, oversampled to 16 bit in post processing... from what I understand.

Although X1D2 is 14bit upsampling to 16bit. The colour output from X1D2 really amazing. I love the advantage of its lens leaf shutter that enable high speed flash sync to 1/2000 that I can shoot with fill flash in daylight (Nikon compatible flash). Long time exposure can be insanely up to 68 minutes. Most other cameras cannot do that. I have the camera so I know.

My thing about ISO is: auto works. If you want to adjust the depth of field then you change the aperture. If you want to change the motion blur, adjust the shutter. ISO is just a compensation for the other two. With new cameras you can set a limit on auto iso. So I know my camera doesn't look good above 6400, so I set a limit on 6400 and leave it on auto. Why would you need to adjust it?

Just as a side-note. The flash-sync is not really that important. Modern studio strobes have either the ability to use HSS or - just as important - they have a very short flash duration, so you freeze movement anyway. Outside it's a different matter but you can still use HSS. The problem with LS lenses is that they require regular maintenance and that's very expensive, much more expensive than a camera service for the 50R/50S.

HSS is not at all the same in terms of power. Different needs for different jobs and if you depend on lighting control on location a leaf shutter and 1/2000s even 1/500s sync is the difference between needing 500w/s 1000w/s 2000w/s 4000w/s etc... HSS makes your 500w/s strobe more like a speedlight in terms of power which limits distance, modifiers, etc, etc, etc... HUGE difference. Thank goodness there's actually a choice which will not be the same for everyone.

Three quick comments. 1. The first thing I thought as I hit play was "Can these be cropped to emulate the X-Pan look that Andrew loves? Apparently, Yes. 2. Hasselblad putting the shutter in the lens seems wasteful. You would be re-buying an expensive component with each lens. I don't understand that. 3. If Fujifilm could get a GFX sensor in something closer to an X100 series format (including leaf shutter!) it would be game over.

The advantages of leaf shutter against focal plane shutter are: Full flash sync for all shutter speeds up to 1/2000s, no necessity of HSS or HS flash sync that looses a lot of power, this is a big advantage for outdoor flash in bright sunlight and big apertures. Much lower shutter vibrations than focal plane curtains, because modern leaf shutters have 4 tiny carbon leaves, in each leaf pair the vibrations of one leaf is subtracted from the vibrations of the opposite leaf.

I absolutely agree with your experience on the Gfx 50R. As much as I would love to keep it, comming from X-Pro2 this was a big quality downgrade at the time as I bought the GFX. It feels horrible in the hands, and that carry over buttons and joystick from the XT line apear tiny on this camera. Also the thick sticking out frame around the screen was a disapointment for me. If Fuji gives this system as much love as they do for the X-Pro line, then I would invest in it again!!!

My fix for this crave of the medium format look: Lumix S5ii + Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f1.2 VM aspherical. The lens is tiny, with the leica M to L mount adapter which is also tiny it provides a very compact and good looking setup. @AndrewGoodCamera you should give it a shot, it really produces awesome photos and lots of people told me it feels like medium format :)

I think the Hasselblad is a much higher build quality, it’s menus system is industry leading and very similar to Leica. The Hasselblad lenses are far far superior and leaf shutters always out perform focal plane shutters, the processor produces better colors and together they produce far superior images. Fuji build is fair, interface is fair, lenses are at bottom for MF systems, while cheaper than Leica S or Hasselblad lenses they bring up the rear. If image quality is the goal with MF, Fuji may not punch that ticket with those lenses.

Totally agree with your comment on ISO adjustment. But to go one step further. You should also be able to immediately see, in a mirrorless camera EVF, the changes ISO makes to the image. And however the camera indicates the under to over exposure should be live during ISO dial adjustment. Just like changing the shutter and aperture dials. And in my opinion even on a DSLR where you have to press a button to get to ISO adjustment, changing ISO should change the under to over exposure indicator live.

I've owned both and just could never like the 50R... I respected it but never liked shooting with it. It felt huge, clumsy and not at all streamlined from the 50S to call it a travel camera like some do. The X1D2 is more expensive but I would rather pay the money and be happy. If the Fuji Omega comes out I would consider that for studio work but for now Fuji remains my ultralight travel gear (XE3) and the X1D2 is my everyday home gear and no compromise gear that I will pack if the trip is worth it.

Panasonic S1R also has the 65:24 X-Pan ratio. Used to have the 50R. Now using an X1D 4116.

When deciding on the Hass speed shouldn’t be your consideration because it’ll just leave you frustrated. Having said that the X1D II is far from slow, it takes a couple seconds to load up when first switched on but that’s not an issue for me. It’s a thing of beauty. Oh and re the lcd screen being unresponsive .. mine is super responsive so I’m not sure why you had that issue. The Fuji is just fugly and it’s a reason I dumped my Sony alpha’s, Sony glass is phenomenal but their bodies lack imagination. The colour science on the Hass too, magical pics all the time.

I've been using the GFX50R with the 23mm and 32-64mm f4 for 18 months now. I am always amazed by the IQ (I shoot landscapes). I thought a while back that maybe it was too much camera for me and nearly sold it, but it was when I looked back at the images that I just couldn't part with it. I really wish they made a 16-35mm equivalent (so a 20-45) wide-angle zoom, then it'd be the perfect landscape camera - for me anyway.

I totally agree. I wasn't thinking the GFX IQ would be all that big a difference, but I'm addicted to the freedom the resolution provides and how gorgeous the micro contrast is.

If you take some time to study how the X1D works you will find that you can change focus point with the dials. You can also reprogram buttons to what you want.

the reason hassy lenses are so expensive is they have leaf shutter mechanism good for high speed flash sync. fuji don't i have the gfx 50r and some gf lenses sync speed 250sec blaaah

Great honest review! Very detailed in terms of sensations which at the end of the day are a big part of taking pictures with any equipment, I really liked the angle of your comparison. In the case of the Hassy I was interested in the weight balance aspect, the body is slimmer but the lens seems a bit bulky. I'm aware that being a MF camera these 2 cameras can be considered compact Thanks again for this video!

Sadly the best budget 'medium format' camera is the original X1D. I bought one a few months after launch. The price has tumbled, although it's still a fantastic camera. The colours are excellent.

Good video. But I get the feeling there is a variable missing in that equation. With the same sensor there is also the Pentax 645Z. It's a bulkier camera but a real tool and fun to work with because of the grip and the OVF.

The Pentax is also a true medium format camera, which neither the Hassy nor the GFX aspire to, if "only" a 645. It is, however, twice the weight of the X1D II (1550 gr vs 770 gr). The price drop to $5000 helps, though.

@@leonardnorwitz3537 Mirrorless is in today. It makes sense for cameras to become significantly lighter and smaller, at least for me. Sometimes, however, I get the impression that this is quickly compensated for by the size and weight of modern lenses. Everyone must determine for themselves the essential factors to make the decision on which camera it should be. The OVF and the handling, the grip of the Pentax were decisive for me in direct comparison to the Fuji. And there are plenty of very good and inexpensive used lenses for the Pentax on the market.

I used MK1 version of Hassie before Fujifilm. Did Hasselblad finished the product ? I did not notice last time when I had mk2 for a few day's. For designer seems to be more important that the one must stare in to Hasselblad logo for 5 seconds then to take photo of the momentum. It might be nice camera and system for someone who does not shoot photos.

My analog Fuji GSW 670 is my baby and it looks very much the GFX 50r (I have never hold the GFX so i dont know about the size). My dream is that Fuji makes a digital version of the GSW 670. More or less a GFX 50r but with a fixed lens and a leaf shutter.
