I had the Hasselblad combo for a year and recently switched to the Fuji combo and I can only say that they are not playing in the same league. The Fuji is superior in EVERYTHING except visual design of camera and menu UI. I mean everything. Also like others i question the WB on the Fuji in this test, looks very strange. Now don't get me wrong, the XCD II is a beautiful camera that can produce amazing results but it is many times a very, very frustrating experience - I do not think I have missed more great shots in my life combined than what I did in my year with the Hassy. AF is terrible, handling is slow etc. Whereas with the Fuji it just work, Everytime.

The Fuji is the better allround package. Hasselblad has the "Hasselblad look" which many people including myself love. On Hass you can dial in WB manually, also has a colour checker built in - I had GFX50s before X1 series - colours are far more natural on Hass - by a long way too - but some shooters don't want this they want a stylistic' look that isn't necessarily achieved in post - even though it can be - many presets available for instance by Fuji fans - and not just Fujifilm sims either - this is where Fuji wins - also Fuji is a much more complex machine in some respects - a big turn off for me - although this iteration and with bigger MPX capability seems to address those issues - I could not get on with the fiddly tilty viewfinder either - however the biggest win for me is tethering with Phocus - it is the dogs wotsits compared to Fuji as I can control so much more and have the files ready for anything in an instant. However price points are a big consideration making rethink the whole shebang - double the MPX for less than half the price once we start talking lenses. If I was still shooting weddings I would consider buying two and a bunch of lenses in a heartbeat especially now they have got Nisi flashguns under a brand licensing agreement????????

I have gotten to shoot with these camera side by side (as well as the original GFX 100), and wanted the Fujis to be better, because of the superior autofocus and IBIS. When I shot the Fujis first, it was a 'wow, what great images' moment. However, when you then look at the Hassy files (once you delete the missed shots from no IBIS because you were brave and took it off the tripod), it's a 'holy buckets, these are really, really special images!' I don't think any amount of color checking would show this after KZbin's compression takes over, but I can say from personal experience with my own eyes that (unfortunately for one's pocket book and ability to shoot without a tripod) the Hassy produces far superior, much more special images right out of camera. In other words, I hope Hassy makes a 100mp version of the X1D with IBIS and hybrid AF very, very soon!

One distinction factor, not on quality of camera or lenses, but important for many people, is that the Hasselblad system is much more expensive on the lens side. If you compare lenses in both systems like for like, the XCDs are typically significantly more expensive than the GFs. For lots of photographers clearly an argument given that both systems are excellent in quality besides differences in nuances here and there.

I doubt you could say anything about sharpness when Hasselblad images in the video are zoomed in 100% while Fuji images are zoomed in 66.7%. For a precise comparison, the Hasselblad files should have been upsampled, or maybe the Fuji downsampled.
@mathphotographer3 жыл бұрын
Agree from a technical point of view but not from a practical point of view. These images are super close from a sharpness perspective and the crop-in whether 100% or 66.7% is just fine. From down- or up-sampling you will not gain materially more insight. No matter how much you crop in, images from both cameras will be sharper than anything you have seen before :)

I think the lens on the Hasselblad is better and when combined with a leaf shutter exposing the sensor from center out creates superior images. Larger sensors just have issues being exposed by Focal plane shutters, leaf shutters are clearly a better way to expose a large sensor and it showed on every shot.
@GKhanKutar3 жыл бұрын
Leaf shutter has no relation with that and Hasselblad lens is not better. You can not clearly understand which one is better with this video. They are different lenses. Fuji has different character with its lens design. They did not focus to create crazy sharp at wide open aperture with this lens. They focused on creating character and better bokeh.

Agree with you analysis, the FUJI would make for an all around standalone system, the Hasselblad is more "specialized."
@Bayonet18093 жыл бұрын
Some comments on your testing methodology, if you are interested. Why use spot metering? If you are comparing dynamic range rather than metering accuracy you should use ETTR with verification from RawDigger. For best focusing you should be using the built-in focus shift features of both cameras at the finest step size and later select the most in-focus on a monitor rather than using focus peaking. The differences in colour could also be due to the variation in Adobe's implementation of colour profiling in Lightroom/ACR, so from your test it is impossible to tell whether any differences in colour are as a result of Fuji or Hasselblad's colour science (which really only applies to their own raw processing engines). You should also be resizing the Fuji's images to the pixel dimensions of the Hasselblad to ensure you are comparing at the same magnification. A different subject could also be better for demonstrating fine detail reproduction. If you are confident that Hasselblad images have a different (better?) look then could you please demonstrate this in a controlled comparison in the future please?

Hi, thanks for the review. You mention Hasselblad sensors, I thought they were using Sony made sensors, but are applying their own colour science in the processor. Is that what you meant? Thanks!
@jpdj27153 жыл бұрын
Please note that your Sony is the Semiconductor company and this is totally separate from the stills camera company (former Konica-Minolta). Semiconductor has worked with Nikon a long time, using Nikon machines to make their VLSI components and learnt a lot from that. It has "Chinese Walls" between them and the camera company. Semiconductor will loose clients because in publicity the relation is used to give the camera company a competitive advantage - by fooled naive people and shrewd marketers. The sensor is a rather dumb and rather passive component. It is colorblind and analog. The innovation it received in recent years was an analog-to-digital (AD) circuit tied to the sensor. This is where your 12, 14 or 16 bits gradation are. Semiconductor advertises their sensors as 16 bits - baloney - and in small print footnote state that 14 are photographically meaningful. That's plain 14. If you want 16, you either buy an older generation sensor and route its Voltage measurements through your own discrete AD, or take a 14 newer and remap the 14 tot 16 bits. A very important part of a camera's color treatment is the filter overlay over the sensor. This is from the camera manufacturer, not Semiconductor. If you understand loudspeaker crossover filters, it compares to crossover frequency and filter decay as dB/octave. There's a lot of camera manufacturer wisdom in there. This also applies to the second filter that I call the fuzzy filter. It disperses light from the lens traveling to one photosite to surrounding photosites. This to facilitate "raw processing". That's an old trick already applied by engineers developing scanning tunneling electron microscopes in the 70s. It makes mathematically repeatable and precise 'wild-assed guesses' much easier. In our case the sensor comes up with one color per photosite and "raw processing" turns that into RGB pixels. In this guesswork, noise and Moiré are created. Here, gradation us lost. And here you end up with at best 27 bits color space because developers of raw processing algorithms, like DxO, cannot do better. Note that high res cameras do away with the fuzzy filter as they have enough detail to not need them. But this renders old raw processing algorithms suboptimal. A problem since the Nikon D800E. Also note that human perception of resolution or sharpness relates directly to linear units. Two times linear increase from 24MP (6,000*4,000 photosites) implies 12,000*8,000=96MP. MP are an area number and meaningful to file size and processing effort, not human perception. Comparing cameras basically is comparing the raw processing's adaptation to your specific camera, specific firmware version and specific lens. When Lightroom gave me noise in ISO=100 landscape shots taken in the middle of a sunny summer day, Nikon SW did not. And with an F mount lens on the 7, LR also didn't. And C1 supported nothing. And DxO was great but had the worst preview and asset process. So when you look at RGB pixels on your monitor, that's software and low-level profiles, primarily. A guy who lived in a big white mansion for a couple years might have called it "fake". A focal plane shutter has time parallax, a leaf shutter has not, but in both cases, the sensor has time parallax and it always (almost) generates a raw file with monochrome photosite data. We need two paradigm shifts. Zero time parallax and RGB sensor's - the latter makes fuzzy filters and raw processing superfluous.

@@ChrisM-yq2pq if that would be that easy as you say - I wouldn't be asking that question. M5 is a tricky camera, because lightmeter is CdS one, they are relatively hard to find, they are hard to calibrate, they are hard to replace. Basically if your lightmeter is dead it might take years to track down suitable replacement and years of experience and special equipment to actually replace it (or finding one of the rare specialists who have that). Rangefinder separation is somewhat easy to fix as it is the same issue that plagues all old Leicas, but rangefinder is unique there, so you would need to actually disassemble everything, clean, glue back together, recalibrate. Something that is relatively easy to do (a lot of leica repair specialists do that, it is just costly). Anyway, I solved the question and soon after found actually two M5s in close-to-perfect conditions (one in Switzerland, another in Austria). They pop up every now and then, it is just very hard to get hands on one, but if you are patient enough it might pop up.

Also people who buy this lenses care for bokeh quality and it would be great to see. One more thing pushing 3 stops those sensors is not much , they are going to be clean (specially at 100% view). 4-6 stops we would see which one is actually better.

Thank you mathphotographer. Please do a high ISO samples comparison if you get a chance. Fuji should be better, being that the sensor is a BSI sensor. Resolutions are different, so that should be taken into account, although based on what I've seen in the video, it seems you know that part. Now, medium format is generally better than Full Frame; but keep in mind, there's the law of diminishing returns, so the value for every dollar spent might make a purchase decision complex. I myself have thought about getting a medium format with BSI sensor for astronomy applications. I might even get a medium format service to get rid of the CFA, which many people might not even know about such a thing- which can increase resolution at least slightly but also immensely increase ISO ability. That's currently so far beyond my budget, but still, am glad to have watched your channel!

Hasselblad for me after reviewing both files in Photoshop Fuji vs Hassy, Hassy blew them all away-Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fuji. I was in shock the X1D a very old camera in Electronic years blows away the Nikon Z8 in image Quality!! Swedish not playing around.

Adobe RGB is not a profile! It's a color space / rendering intent. Choosing Adobe RGB does nothing to alter the colors from a camera. The colors are defined by the raw processing profile. You're contributing to the near universal confusion around these topics. Hasselblad X and Fuji GFX cameras have the same sensors (unless you're comparing dfferent generations like you're doing in this video) and produce raw files with the same linearity. The color differences are from the raw processing profiles. You can do a lot to change these.

Hassy is the best white balance and Fuji for person who need distortion color tone for style. and the GF lens has the corner chromatic aberration image.

Yes - that's why I print images large for clients. And I need to stay reasonable in my non-scientific considerations so I look at them at computer screens. What I can tell you is that prints from both cameras are just fantastic. I develop at White Wall and then sell out to clients. And here you really see the difference between medium format and full frame so fully agree with your statement.

Wow the Hasselblad 80/1.9 is sharper wide open even on the corners...i did not expect that. But it is also about twice as expensive as the Fuji...and don't get me wrong the Fuji is VERY good, but like I said i did not think the Hassy would be noticeably better. As the other commenters suggests...yeah sure it's not scientific but this would have been a lot better if you use a Colorchecker chart to have a calibrated sensor...or for low-effort you could have at least used a gray card to ensure the white balance is on point... I have no complaints with Hasselblad's AF performance...it's contrast-detect only but as you noted it's AF accuracy is very good. I was honestly expecting the Fuji to be a lot faster. As fo the entire camera design...I prefer the clean lines and simple/basic control design language of the Hassy. Good thing I don't do photography for a living because the XCD can be finicky and unreliable (with its early firmware...occasionally locks up...and the only camera i've lost images while shooting because it locked up while writing the images to its buffer)...otherwise I would choose the Fuji.

"Different sensors", it is the same type of Sony sensor in both cameras !
@mathphotographer3 ай бұрын
Same type for sure but individually calibrated and embedded. Likely its Sony as sensor manufacturer, I agree. But I am also not 100% sure … But yes, Sony makes most of the sensors in top notch cameras from various brands, spot on in your comment.

It's definitely niche but yeah, flash sync is a little rough with fuji. Kinda expected them to have made the 1.7 with a leaf shutter like the pentax 67 had with some lenses.

It's known that this Fuji has a magenta like color rendering, specially with skin tones. Fine subtle tonal ranges seem also not being rendered as nice as on the X1D.

In RAW shooting WB is set identical in the software, and film simulation is a no go, at the end you want your own pictures style and not a Fuji film out of the box rendering made for everybody.
