As an owner of the X1D original camera, I sincerely thank you for making this video. You confirmed my decision to stick with this camera even though I was tempted to purchase the Mark II version. I used the H series Hasselblad cameras for several years ( beginning with the H1 and trading up through the H5 as newer models were released), with several H lenses. My major interest is landscape photography, but lugging around almost 50 lbs. of gear became unbearable as I got older. So I traded in the H5 for the X1, eliminated the heavy 120mm macro lens, and purchased a lighter tripod and backpack. This reduced the total weight by almost 50 percent! I use my old H series lenses with the X1 camera via the Hasselblad XH adapter ring. Most important, the image quality of the X1 camera is identical to that of the H5, which uses the same sensor. However, I do wish they would bring out more lenses for the X series so I could further reduce weight and bulk and get the benefit of auto-focus.

Hi, thx for your kind comment. You can safely stick with the original/first X1D since it is a fantastic camera, really no need to upgrade. Lenses are a problem, indeed. I ordered the XCD 45p (that new smaller 45mm) months ago and it is still not delivered to Switzerland. But the lenses I have do a great job, its just annoying to wait so long for a lens :)

the secret menu in the original X1D is awesome to know about, I picked mine up this year in March and had the same issues you had. It was sent back to Hasselblad and a few weeks later it returned working better, but it was always a concern of mine with the camera if or when the dials stop working the way they should. I just done the tap on the menu and looked to find it was still on original so I've changed it to adjusted and working better now even. Why do they not put this in the instruction manual is beyond me.

I was also an early adopter of the X1D, and the the most part loved the camera as a medium format walk around with leaf lens; for full flash sync. I discovered Phase One and Capture One. Since Capture One didn't support the X1D. I left Hasselblad. I loved Capture One that much. Love my Phase One, but I wished they would make a X1D2 equal. Great discussions on both cameras.

Love the X1D. IQ is second to none (except for perhaps your Phase One, which I have no first-hand experience with), as are the camera ergonomics and menuing systems. I sold my X1D only because I wanted more lens options, which is limited for X1D due to the larger image circle needed to cover sensor and no focal-plane shutter I do miss the IQ and shooting experience though.

If you never reset your shutter count, then the shutter count is equal to the number of images overall taken with the camera. Problem is when you purchase a Hasselblad X camera 2nd hand. The seller could have resetted the count at some time and then the overall shutter count cannot be read-off in the menu.

@mathphotographer3 жыл бұрын
By specs, the sensors should be the same, you are right, and likely misformulated on my side. What I wanted to say is that a more recent camera typically includes some tweaks on the sensor technology, maybe also coming from the processing unit in the newer camera, which further improves the overall sensor technology even if by pure specs they are the same.

Have you compared the tethering from the X1D and the X1Dii is there a difference. Also from a personal point the difference between the X1Dii and the Leica SL2. I use the original SL's for my commercial work but the tether option is diabolical, unusable. Does the Mk2 make as much noise as the X1D in operating the shutter? My X1D 50C is fritzing out. It looks like it's trying to do video sometimes, the viewfinder turns magenta and frequently, the autofocus aid light remains on. I'm nervous about the repair charge. Anybody have a clue?? Thanks for your video!
@mathphotographer3 жыл бұрын
The "magenta" sounds strange but your question on shutter noise can be easily answered: the X1D and X1D II operate a so-called Leaf Shutter, means, the shutter is in the XCD lenses and not in the camera body. So the shutter sound comes from the lens and not the camera body. Leaf Shutters have pros and cons but what many people love about it is that it can sync with a flash at nearly any shutter speed. Means, for instance, that you can shoot with the aperture wide open in bright light conditions. In any case, the shutter noise is the same on both, the X1D and X1D II since its sitting in the lenses, not the camera bodies.

Thanks a lot for yet again an excellent video. I have a quick question for you, if possible: how do you compare the image quality of the X1D II to the Leica SL2? and which camera do you prefer to use? would be grateful for you highly valued opinion. Best, Elie
@mathphotographer4 жыл бұрын
I have some ambiguity here ... just based on technical facts, the sensor of the X1D (II) currently is the best available sensor (see DxOMark tests) besides the Phase One IQ4 which in my opinion is the best sensor but not yet tested by DxOMark and outside the mainstream since super expensive. On the other side, the SL2 sensor is fantastic too and I love shooting with the SL2. The X1D (II) sensor has a bit more resolution but the resolution of the SL2 is plenty enough. I use the SL2 much more often than the Hasselblad but sometimes take the X1D (II) with me like last weekend where I shot Zurich city lights with the X1D II and a Cambo View Camera adapter. I will post a short video on my X1D II shooting in the next days, have a look :) I am also very curious to try out the new Canon EOS R5 which I currently have here for testing but did not post anything yet.
@Eliehbk4 жыл бұрын
mathphotographer thanks for. Your feedback. From what I read, the SL2 is a much more versatile camera than the X1Dii. I actually own the SL2 but find it as an overkill camera for me in the sense that I never use the speed that it offers since my style of shooting is very deliberate and single shot all the time. Furthermore, the Leica is very heavy for casual use. I know that the X1DII isn’t light weight either, however, a combo with 45p will be as heavy as the SL2 body alone. I loved my M10 because wanted an EVF incorporated in a camera. I love manual focusing but couldn’t deal with the range finder anymore. I take picture of my two toddlers a lot and manual focusing is challenging at times but still an engaging process. My second question to you, is if you think the X1Dii is more like an M camera with a viewfinder, in the way it is intended to be used? What’s most concerning to me is the shutter lag when pressing it to take a picture, would you say it’s an issue one can work around to take pictures of moving kids? Lastly, thanks so much for your videos, always excellent to watch. I am looking forward to the R5, even though, after using so many Leicas and cherishing their simplicity, I could never go back to shooting with such cameras.

As always - thank you for your always informative content. N
@RolandAyala4 жыл бұрын
I have an SL2 which replaced my X1D. The SL2 is a more versatile camera but the X1D wins if comparing the two solely based on IQ. In fact, the X1D bests most cameras at or below its price point, including the GFX50 IMO, even though the same sensor (X1D colors are better, again IMO). Pretty impressive given it was introduced over 3 years ago (the v2 version has nice enhancements, but IQ is the same as the original). I sold my X1D for several reasons. - No Capture One support and I don't like Phocus. Also, no indication that CO will ever support Hassy cameras. - Need Phocus to get the most out of the image, where Phocus converts the camera-generated 3DR files a 3F file (.fff), with corrections applied. If only ever use Phocus then not an issue, but having these different file formats become cumbersome if working across different editors. - Adapting non-native (or non-leaf shutter) glass requires you to use the electronic shutter. Practically speaking, this limits you to tripod use when adapting lenses. You can get by without a tripod and still get a decent image, but you need to be very steady and have a static subject. - As an MF system, adapting lenses is further challenged by limiting to those producing a sufficiently large image circle. Practically speaking, this means MF lenses from other systems. You can find some FF lenses that work with acceptable results, but the pickens are slim. - The XCD lenses offer superb IQ, but I'm not keen on the fly-by-wire focusing system and feel. This is only an issue if you prefer MF in certain scenarios (such as landscapes), which is the case for me. It can be a little tricky to dial in focus manually with these lenses, in my opinion anyway. In a nutshell, if you're fully bought into the Hassy system (cameras, lenses, Phocus), I think the X1D is a great choice. Also, while the X1D IQ bests just about anything out there under $10K, it's not magic. It's perfectly capable of creating bad images and your shooting style and discipline will have a much greater influence on IQ than the marginal improvement the X1D offers over your SL2.

Roland Ayala thank for the insight. The unsupported C1 thing is a bit of an issue, I don’t see switching back to LR but have seen some workarounds... I am fairly deep into the Leica ecosystem but am (&have been) eyeing the medium format word. I know Fuji is probably more SL-like, technically speaking, but I am very curious about the simplicity of the X1. Hasselblad is sending me the camera in a week, I can’t wait to do a head-to-head between SL2 and X1DII. Thanks again for your input.
@RolandAyala4 жыл бұрын
@@ndt7692 The simplicity of the X1D is indeed very appealing, as is its size and weight (as a system, with lenses). I had the GFX50 prior to that, but I never ended up grabbing for it because of its size and weight. Then, after renting the X1D, if found I liked the way the X1D rendered images better too, so I sold the GFX for the X1D. You are right about the CO workarounds which involve modifying the image metadata, but I didn't want to be bothered with that. Yes, you can make CO work if willing to jump through some hoops. You, of course, will not get any of the corrections if going this route. All that said, the X1D is a great and often underrated stills camera. I do miss the images it produces. Good luck with your decision! :-)
@ndt76924 жыл бұрын
@@RolandAyala Thanks for your reply. I'm cautiously optimistic, knowing full well the X1D is vastly different and, by some, might be deemed technologically inferior compared to the SL2 due to the X1D's limitations in regards to FPS, AF, Lack of Braketting options, limited shutter speed. But the features "lacking" from the X1D are not the most important to me I prefer a more deliberate approach to photography ie.: manual focusing, slow composition etc.. I look forward to the few days I'll have to test it and make an apples-to-oranges comparison :-) All my best, N
