@@The_Comms_Channel Definitely just getting into it. I want to add packet and APRS capabilities to a go box I am planning to build but didn’t want it to be super complicated. Having a small dedicated radio for this purpose makes the most sense to me. I showed your video to my 18 year old son and he is thinking about building one as well. Should be a fun project!
@The_Comms_Channel Жыл бұрын
Great idea! That sounds like a fun project for you both. Good to see younger folks with interest in this stuff. For our digipeater, we have one in a pelican case with a LiFePO4 battery and solar panel to keep it charged up. I'll be doing an in-depth video (probably a series of videos) on that set up and how to do it. Let me know how your project goes!

What is the benefit to using the TYT with the soldiered adapter VS just getting the Alinco with the port already installed from the factory?
@The_Comms_Channel Жыл бұрын
Mainly just saving on cost. The TYT is about $50 cheaper than the Alinco. I know some people like connecting two of the TYTs together and making a repeater which would then be $100 savings. Also, if you have a need for the 220 band, the Alinco version has become hard to find.
@James-bm3ri Жыл бұрын
@@The_Comms_Channel Fair reasons. I did so much soldiering at one point in my life that it almost pisses me off doing it now. Even if it is just four points that will take me 2 minutes.....but that's MY problem. Lol Thanks for giving the money saving option for the general audience. That's important to get more people into all this stuff.

I hear you, haha. I think I've soldered about 5 or 6 of the NucleoTNCs for myself and friends. I got to the point where I needed to take a break from soldering for a while lol. Definitely want to get more people interested in Ham Radio and into the packet radio side of things.

Sure will. We've done the same set-up. Your mileage may vary depending on how much it's being used and what power setting the radio is on.

Excellent video. Does this apply to any other TYT radios?
@The_Comms_Channel Жыл бұрын
I've not come across any other TYTs that have this internal data/audio port. That said, you can make any radio work with packet radio as long as you have a way to access the audio in/out, PTT, GND. Your comment got me thinking about another TYT radio I have, the TH-8600. Looks like there's a website that sells cables for that that go to a DB9. hammadeparts.com/shop-for-cables/ols/products/tyt-th-8600-6-pin-gx12-mic-plug-and-18-speaker-plug-to-db9-kantronics-type I may play around with mine and see if I can make something similar. Do you have a TYT radio already? If so, what model?

Is there an unlock for this radio? Openning this up into a dual band 70cm/2m would be a game changer

They're single band only I'm afraid. They offer 3 versions 2m/1.25m/70cm but it would be nice for a dual bander

The required screws are M2.5 - just like used on the RPi enclosures. Have you done more then 1k2 with your modem? I'm wondering what the maximum speed via that connector might be?
@The_Comms_Channel Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that size info! I'll get some to replace the two that I grabbed from the case. I've not tried 9600 myself, but I imagine it should be able to since the Alinco it's based off of is 9600 capable. I'll verify when I get a moment in the shack and let you know!
@The_Comms_Channel Жыл бұрын
Tried it with 9k6, but no luck. I do see on the RPC electronics page for the packet adapter board where they say this: "9600 may be possible but would need to be wired internally differently." I'll continue searching and see if I can find further information on it.
@markphillips8019 Жыл бұрын
@@The_Comms_Channel if only there was a circuit diagram for that radio. We might be able to find the discriminator and modulator parts for a proper mod. I use NinoTNCs and so I might try lower speeds. 2400 will easily work but 4800 is also worth a try.
@The_Comms_Channel Жыл бұрын
I was able to find a site with schematics. tinymicros.com/mediawiki/images/e/e8/TYT_TH-9000_VHF-220-260MHz_Schematics_2.pdf This is for the 220 model, which I have and can do some testing on. Not sure how much the other models would differ from the 220. Finding the discriminator isn't something I've done before and will have to do some research on, however.
@Driekes10 Жыл бұрын
I see you use the rx96 pin. Does it support 9600 baud on that connector?
@The_Comms_Channel Жыл бұрын
As far as I can tell, this radio does not support 9600 unfortunately. RPC Electronics, who makes the board, mentions this on the product page though: "9600 may be possible, but would need to be wired internally differently" Not sure what needs to be done to wire it for that though.

@@The_Comms_Channel yeah I’m going to keep trying. We have a pretty large 220 repeater network but it’s often real quite, which is a bummer because 220 is such a cool band.
