I prefer the no-longer-manufactured Remington Model 887 over the 590. I find that the reach to the fore-end is too great for my shorter arms, and the 887 improves on this -- and also, somehow, does better on recoil too. The Ruger GP100 is my favorite gun. I don't have to apply a 'death-grip' to the gun for it to cycle as I do for a pistol, and the reliability and safety is unbeatable. I have an older Ruger Mark1 pistol, but I also have the world's best magazine loader for it. You just dump the bulk .22s into it, clip on your magazine, and bam -- you're mag is re-loaded!

They also came with the Girandoni air rifle…the first PCP air rifle, which mesmerized the Indians. If you want to talk about compact ammunition, a tin of 500 .22 cal pellets is the size of a large snuff can. True preppers are stealthy, and an air rifle can be deadly accurate in the right hands. A brick of .22 rim fire ammo uses the same volume as more than 5000 pellets…and are a whole lot cheaper. JMHO, YMMV

I've shot with the best in the world and belive me we can alll completely miss an 18x24" "torso" at 10m with mach guns, nice light, stationary, full-frontal, erect target, ear and eye protection, us being stationary, . Make that target the 10" vitals circle,, have it move, use cover, in bad light, without any ear or eye protection and have bullets narrowly missing you maybe also having hit you and the misses become common at 10 FEET. The fear factor causes you to jerk the gun around Once the longarms come out the pistol doesnt amount to a hill of beans. So I will use the same 6" long, 16 oz single stack 9mm that I wear for edc, with the same velcroed in, front pants pocket holster, Such a rig is out of sight, out of the elements even if I have to low crawl. It's accessible, and out of the wsy of the pack harness and the rifle (slung or not) You'd better KEEP your silencer, shorty AR in 223 always either in your hands, or on your assault sling. for the first year (at least) of shtf, you'd better stay in a tunnel, 23 hours per day. come out only at night, to access a food bucket, eat and return to your tunnel. The first month, you can't cook or have food inside of your tunnel, cause all of the dogs have not been eaten yet. So the food you have scatter-buried at your BOL better rflect that fact. It better be granola, powdered milk, flour tortillas, nut butters, sugar salt, koolaid.,vinegar salad dressing jerky, dried frut. nobody'a going anywhere by road or by 4 wheeled vehicle. there will be ambushes everywhere, all it takes to stop cars is 1" thick wood and 3" nails. Such things are easily found/carried Your BOL has to be in the woods at your local water source, at least for the first year. The next fall, you can use a raft to drift down river 30 miles per night, brinigng your mountain bicycle on t he raft and a drum of goodies being towed behind you. After a year, 99% of the population will be dead, 90% in 6 months. The stored food, produce, livestock will be gone in a month fish and game in another month. By day 90, the dogs and cats will have been eaten and the cannibalim will be in full squing. at night, after a year, showing no light, you can tend small, hidden plots of peanuts and root veggies. In another year, at night, after half of the remaining 1% have died-off, it will be feasible, to go scrounge what you need. So many will have died, so quickly, that there will plenty of stuff ready to be picked up and used.

#1: When a revolver jams, it's dead until you get it torn down and repaired, something like a 1911 can be cleared and running ASAP! #2: A plastic gun like a Glock, are not as durable as an all metal gun! #3: A pump shotgun as long as you choose a durable one is a mandatory choice for it's power and flexibility, but the ammo is really heavy! #4: A rifle like the AR-15 is not a bad choice, if built right it can go from light as a toy to one with a 20" bull barrel and a scope for long range shooting and the ammo is crazy common, but I feel an AK is more durable and reliable, especially when dirty. #5: The main reason to get 22LR is you can carry quite a few thousand rounds easily. #6: I'd say if you were bugging out, have a 12 Gauge in your hands loaded with buckshot and slugs, a rifle over the shoulder on a sling, a couple pistols on your hip, at least one in 9mm, and a take-down semi-auto 22 LR rifle and pistol in the pack!

As usual the question of "just one gun" to cover all situations just doesn't make sense to older senior citizen ranch/farm kids with military backgrounds. I grew up with .44 Magnum handguns partly due to the fact my Dad was an acquaintance of Elmer Kieth. The Ruger and S&W longer barrel were able to take from small birds up to and including Elk. I had one acquaintance retired Sheriff who won a disagreement with a homicidal felon so the ability to use for self defense against single opponent and survival with in range for hunting it would be OK. However the12ga. Break action shotgun with the drop in pistol rifle caliber inserts are great for survival. However if there is an outside chance of contact with multiple characters with nefarious intent an AR type weapon with optics is hard to beat. I still tend towards the longer20" barrels. Close quarters combat short barrels are a plus but for all round general survival long barrels rule.

Given the present state of things, it seems only prudent not to talk about what is presently in your stores as firearms/longarms/calibers in one's cashe. It seems also prudent in owning alternate devices needed to secure a meal or protecting oneself and family in the event that there is such a situation. A firearm makes noise and that will give away OPSEC. This is something no one wants. Move quickly and quietly to to point designated in plans and hunker down. Obviously, this is different if involved in a natural disaster. Just exercise discretion in these situations. If you must carry, no one needs to know what you have or how much. Remember, the present administration and other politicians want to know what you have so they can take it via seizures and raids. As the WWII add age said: Loose lips, sink ships. Keep it frosty and keep it quiet.

The whole 'bug-out' idea is silly, because if something happened to a city that necessitated leaving in a hurry, thousands of people would leave at the same time, making it impossible to get away to a rural sanctuary, and besides, by the time you got to your place (if you even do), someone else will likely have already occupied the place. The only way bugging out would work would be if you are already at, or well on the way to, the rural hideout before the fertilizer impacts the air-moving device.

Bug out ? You become a refugee with limited resources. A .22 LR in a 9 shot revolver and a 10/22 with as much ammo as possible. Still gonna run out of ammo at some point. But the revolver will handle all the .22 rimfire family except the magnum. That includes shotshells. If I had a shot gun, I wouldn't waste much weight with bird shot. Better off trapping small game, for no more meat than a dove or pigeon provides per ounce of lead. Buck shot and slugs is where the 12 ga shines in close range power. If a person had a solid bug out location, the game changes. Especially if the person has reloading equipment and supplies. In that case a .44 magnum revolver would be a nice side piece. It can be loaded light or hot, plus the shot shells are close to a .410 2 3/4" shell worth of shot. Heavy though, when compared to the semi-auto family.
