Getting rid of physical media makes no sense for a number of reasons. Firstly not all movies including older one are available to stream. Secondly some people are collectors and like to own the disc. Lastly you have those people with a home theatre setup who want the best quality and experience and will buy the 4K BluRay.
@andyowski5021 Жыл бұрын
Well I have no reason to shop there now since I can find all my games easier elsewhere anyways. The only thing they still have is a decent distribution of the Limited Run copies of games but if they're getting rid of movies I bet games will follow in a handful of years.

I'm really interested in the craft of movie making, even though I'm not out there doing it, and if that is lost it would be a real shame. It is possible they will still do digital bonus features but there is a certain point at which they will have no incentive to do so because there won't be any other competition as to buying the movie.

Hearing that Best Buy will stop selling physically media always makes me think of how gaming companies don't make handhelds anymore, there's LOTS of people who still play/post stuff online about still playing games on a Gameboy or PSP or even people who still play/post online about playing GameCube or PS2 or Xbox.

Yeah it's interesting because I was looking at global sales and America doesn't sell as many physical movies as a lot of other countries do now which surprised me. But there's still billions of dollars to be made worldwide on physical media. Even now. And going into 2024/2025 there will be too, even if America was to drop off from it. It seems like they could have reinvented the physical media format to make it more affordable and easier to distribute, instead of just ditching it. Something I didn't get into very much is that I also think movie studio greed really hurt physical media because of the prices they were asking.

Physical media isnt dying. Well it is.. but only cause corporations are putting more focus on digital media. I guarantee that if tomorrow digital media went away completely, Physical media would immediately be on the rise again. They WANT you to own nothing and be happy. Its not dying naturally as i thought it would over time. Digital media is being pushed on us at incredible rates. Far faster than i ever thought it would be. Typically i thought Physical media would die maybe in the next 10 to 15 years. But they want it dead sooner and so this is happening. Its why i guarantee that ps6 and the next xbox will be solely digital only and just glorified rental services. When this happens im finding another hobby.
@RyanRedbird Жыл бұрын
You're right about everything, and if the next Xbox and the ps6 don't have a disc drive, then that will be the beginning of the end of the gaming industry entirely. If an all-digital future is as inevitable as everyone says it is, then a second video game the crash is just as inevitable as well.

If Best Buy really isn't interested in selling physical media for Movies, TV Shows, Video Games etc. anymore, they could easily make a branch dedicated to selling physical media. The main issue im gonna have now is i have to buy my stuff online and I hate online shopping, plus if you go anywhere else like Barnes and Nobles, a brand new 4k movie would cost $50 and streaming is becoming worse for one main reason and that is even if Netflix or Disney+ have original movies or shows exclusive to them, they can remove them and you have no where else to watch them, and i know some shows and movies have gotten physical releases, but that’s not enough for the amount of content these platforms make. Im not looking forward towards the future

I can't tell you the amount of times i go to Best Buy every tuesday for new movies and half the time i don't buy no new movies and will find old movies from the 70s or 80s that secretly release steelbooks or 4K transfers and would be really happy to find one. Like i found Ran (1985 Kurosawa) on a very beautiful steelbook and never seen the movie. But i wouldn't have bought or know about this release of the movie had it not been for Best Buy. So now as they don't have video games on shelfs (probably for looting reasons), i don't buy video games unless it's something I'm hyped about like this year, Jedi Survivor and Spiderman 2. Now that Best Buy gets rid of their new movies and games... i honestly wouldn't go to Best Buy anymore. Unless i need to upgrade headphones or buy a new macbook every 7 years

Best buy is very much turning into strictly an "I need" store, not an "I want" store. Will add that physical media is getting harder to find overall FYE has gone through the same thing regarding physical media- store near me used to be wall to wall CDs, games and movies, now it has half a shelf of CDs and about 2.5 shelves of movies, and the other 95% is just memorabilia. I mean Companies are still making physical media, movies are still coming out on Blu-ray and DVD and 4k, people are still buying them, just sellers are refusing to sell and then those same sellers say "huh nobody is buying this thing I don't sell, I guess that means nobody is buying them period"
@lahuk1194 Жыл бұрын
If the physical media sales have declined from $1B to $750M in 1 year, combined with your prior mentions of the DVDs being damaged in transit, maybe they are losing money on lost stock and declining sales, and don't see an improvement, so are cutting thier losses. Still, its also rubbish to see physical media decline and disappear, this is just another nail in the coffin. I don't think physical media will disappear completely, there are the limited run companies making games and DVDs, but its going to be a niche interest in a digital-dominated world. At least there's always the 2nd hand market.

I just heard news of Walmart phasing out physical Xbox games, this pisses me of so fucking much, I got an Xbox One S for my birthday back in 2022 and seeing Microsoft sabotage physical media honestly makes my fucking blood boil so much. This is my FIRST mainstream console I've ever had, I've always wanted to have a huge physical game collection to have for my own, but no, fuck that. Microsoft and Walmart need to realize that certain parts of the world exist, and not everyone has lightning fucking fast internet to support cloud gaming and digital downloads, I'm so tired of people thinking that digital downloads are "So MuCH MoRe CoNvEnIeNt." Downloading digital games from the internet goes just as fast as download a game from a disc, and as games get bigger downloads when will get slower. At this point I don't get into anything mainstream anymore because every time I do, everything goes to shit. this honestly sickens me.

Physical media won't 'go away forever' like some people worry. But it will become more expensive to have it as a hobby. I have no doubt physical video games and DVDs will become for their respective mediums what Vinyl is for the music industry. It will still exist to cater to a hardcore group of collectors and be much more expensive. So most people, especially the younger generation who don't see the big deal with keeping physical media won't bother with it. Even as making things increasingly online makes it easier for these companies to censor 'offensive' content and rewrite history.

I love a place I can go to actually buy electronics. But when I realized that buying a game at Fry's still meant hours of downloading time, I stopped frequenting the place. A place I always loved to be around became dead to me. I would go every month or two, and suddenly it was yearly. Only when I needed electronics. Then they went under, and Best Buy was the only game in town. Now that local BB has closed. Electronics stores have basically failed me. They started doing most of their business online, so I understand and all. But now they can do what they want, and it doesn't mean jack to me. Sucks, but what can be done? The pandemic killed most of what life was left in retail. All that stuff about opening space for new tech is BS. It comes of the sales mentality of never saying no. They are trying to put a positive spin on the fact that business is dying. There is nothing positive about this, but they want it to sound like a step up. On to bigger and better things. But that's actually the opposite of what's really happening. If you're angry about this, welcome to the club. You damn well should be. They should be expanding their inventory right now to fill the demand left from the failure of other electronics outlets. Why? Because the economy is recovering. It may not be back to where it once was, but things are so much better than they were just a year ago. If they keep scaling down, they will become irrelevant. And maybe they don't care. Maybe they have found that online sales is all they need. But I think that's a potentially fatal mistake. I think that without a retail presence, buyers will turn to cheaper online sources. Just as they are deciding they don't need to stock as much, their customers will decide to go elsewhere as long as they are having to buy online anyway. So if BB doesn't want to expand, they should, at the very least, stop scaling down.

DVD and blu ray sales are dropping for many reasons. #1 these studios in America keep making crap movies that are mad woke. #2 they want physical to die so they can get everyone on streaming. #3 they charge way too much for these blu ray. They should be $10-$15 brand new. They make their money on theater's. The blu ray is extra.#4 they want to have control so they can edit media. I'm not a movie guy like you white boys but even I buy a good 10 movies a year.its just hard finding good movies to buy.the hunger games was $15 for all 4 movies at best buy. I didn't even know there were 4 of them trash movies.
