If you could add some sort of reflecting material above your lights, you wouldn't loose some of that lighting that is escaping from the top shelf on which it is mounted, resulting in a more concentrated light hitting the plants.

Nice work on the comparison of lights! I have both the T5 and the more powerful 300W, Relassy Full Spectrum Grow Light on my setup. I decided to rotate my trays in between the two lights during the grow and have had good uniform growth. It may be one way to reduce cost if you can't afford the upfront on the more expensive lights - buy one set for a shelf and rotate daily or every other day.

Good presentation and comparison. Question: re difference in light produced and cost. Since the T5 puts out a bit less light than the T8, what do you think would be the result if one was to use four T5s in lieu of three. It would be less than the cost/expense of the T8, but would give a more comparable light output.

Good Day, and thank you for this very informative video. I am currently thinking seriously on setting up a microgreens shelving rack in my apartment. I feel inclined to order the Barrina T8's as they are given a very good review by your video, over the T5's. However, I noticed you use three T5 lights per shelf; if I purchase the T8's, as they are a higher wattage, should I use also three lights per shelf or would two be good for very good growth? I will think on this, but your video gave a very good comparison. Also, I live in Northern Canada; I would like to try the Ocean Solution 2-0-3 for microgreens, but I am afraid it may freeze on the way to my home; I will have to look further into this, to see if I may still use it after freezing, as I would like to use it with coco coir (less messier than soil for an apartment). Thank you for the very informative video.

Nice video guys! I am constantly doing these light tests on my Microgreens. I also found that my 5000k Barrina T5’s yield higher that my 6500k t5’s. I also noticed your t8’s have clear covers and your t5’s frosted covers. I removed all the frosted covers from the t5’s and increased their Par level by quite a bit, in turn increasing yield.

I would like to know if both the T5 and T8. Are available in different Kelvin ranges. Like 2700k -up to 6500k. I'm also interested in UV. Do either provide any ? I understand par well. I'm also interested in Lumens. In my opinion people get to caught up in JUST wattage and par and forget to figure in the LUMENS Hey I loved everything about what you did here 👍 very informative. How you used two separate trays used the same nutrients ......made it even environmentally and nutritionally and took the time to explain that. So we at home had NO questions. That was very cool 👍 I was a little confused at the end when you weighed the T5. Two trays total was 100g less almost exactly than the two tray total of the T8. The T8 did use 2 x the energy than the T5. One would have to do some averaging or some sort of fancy math to figure in that 100gm.into the energy usage And you know the T8 were running 6500k. Compared to the T5 running only 5000k. That does make a difference in vegetation production in most plants. Just like in a rainbow we like the blue to be bright. Plants love it too. 5000k is a little closer to the red spectrum from my liking on that specific plant variety. It would be interesting to see what the T5 would do at 6500k side by side with the T8. Running 6500k. Then we would be in for a show . I bet the yield and quality would go up on the T5 to be at least what the T8 was . Then a guy would have to average that too to get some real numbers 👍 hey I loved the show

In your Barrina T5 vs Active Grow light test you mentioned that the more powerful lights warranted earlier harvesting for optimal results. Do you get the impression that these Barrina T8s would reduce the average number of days to harvest compared to the T5s? Beyond the implications of reducing the total cost of the grow, I am wondering if having a couple of shelves equipped with higher output lights could function as an accelerator to catch a few trays up so that they could be harvested along with earlier seeded trays to complete delivery schedules in the case of failures or order adjustments after seeding.

Is it possible that the height of the greens being too tall can be mitigated by adjusting the lights lower/closer to the trays?? Perhaps a study with various distances of light to tray would be cool. Even adjusting the distance as the greens grow might be worthwhile.
@Shane7492
@Shane7492 Жыл бұрын
You're not thinking about how significant the yield difference relative to the price of the lights is. The T8 is hands down the best choice, and here's why based on your numbers. This will be based on 1 rack that has 15 lights and 20 trays, and let's assume a 1 week grow cycle under the lights and $2/oz. price of your microgreens. T8: $199.65 one time cost for the lights. $8.40 per week of use. T5: $100.05 one time cost for the lights. $4.20 per week of use. That is a $99.60 difference in the cost of the lights, and a $4.20 difference per week of use. Now let's look at how much more you'll make in revenue based on the yield difference, let alone the better quality product, which is a win-win. Based on your experiment, the T8 produced 51 grams more per tray. Assuming a $2/oz. price point, that comes out to $3.60 per tray more in revenue. For 20 trays, that's $72 more per week. Since the upfront cost of the lights is a one time only, you would break even after only a week and a half. After that, you'd be making $67.80 more per week per rack despite a slightly higher electricity cost for the T8s. Even if your price point was only $1/oz., you'd still break even after only 3 weeks. Based on how quickly you'd break even, better look, and better taste, it's a no brainer that you should choose the T8 when factoring in the extra revenue from the increased yield. And by the way, that comes out to 24% more yield. That is very significant.

^ Underrated comment. The Barrina lights honestly can't be beat for $/performance. Even off of bulk websites like alibaba for the exact same fixtures the pricing only ends up being ~15% cheaper. Their listed PPFD numbers are off, real world you get around 75-80% from what I've seen personally testing mine, but the amount of high quality usable light they produce is still excellent per fixture. When comparing with mainstay brands like Spider Farmer, Sunblaster, etc, the PPFD per $ is better in the Barrina by a factor of 3-7x. It's wild. EDIT: Apologies for the necro notification lol

What will happen if you put the plants closer to the T5? Would you get the same result? Maybe the distance of the light is not traveling far down enough. I just think of the fish tank method well water blurts out some of the light from hitting the bottom of the tank. So just bring the lights closer down would you get the same result on the T5?

The health department in Las Vegas requires lights that are over any kind of food to have a shatter proof covering. Taking off the cover and exposing the LEDs for more par may not be the best idea if aiming to do this for profit. Just my opinion.

Quite interesting and was probably implemented when florescent was the only options glass shattering etc. But leave mine on the LEDs because these new models seem to be more difficult than older models to take off as they are connected to the underside of the led. They used to just pop off. Also exposed wire and water/hydroponics do not mix may be fine but in my opinion double the watts double the lumens. Looks totally worth it to just go ahead save up for the 5000k t8. Spend a little extra on the lights and energy use in turn producing a higher quality product with higher yield safely not having to worry about bootlegging equipment. Quite nice though to provide enough energy with such a low cost and footprint. Maybe will put one of these on each shelf with the lower wattage on edges. Problem solved. On the grow y'all really are so helpful in this space and can't wait for more videos. Setting up a small dwc lettuce grow have been wanting to for a while but seeing you guys pull that tote outta storage and back to use has inspired me. Now just need a hole-saw

I agree that wrapping all 4 sides would be problematic for air flow. Me and my grow partner have recently put together a very small (48ft² or 4.5m²) grow room based on T5 lights, 2x Seville Classic shelves, and other basic gear referenced on this channel, and so far it's working really well. The one bit of flair not found in the On The Grow setup that I opted for was covering the walls with the 6 mil VivoSun Mylar that you can find on Amazon. I've seen other commercial growers post pictures using similar material in a microgreens business FB group I'm in, and it looked impressive. It makes sense that the mylar would be at its best in a smaller room, but I suspect it's probably worth it even in larger spaces. Personally I think the 6 mil curtain style waterproof mylar is where it's at. Everything else looks like glorified tinfoil that I wouldn't expect to stand the test of time.

Great video! Your lighting description was somewhat confusing as you referred to lights or did you means lamps, big difference. Light is the housing holding the lamps. Liked your color temperature K value, but how about Lumen output instead of a Par value in the testing. When you purchase lamps they come with a Lumens rating and Kelvin rating. Your referral to Par value is pretty much useless when purchasing lamps.

If I had a shelf that could only hold a 1010 tray then would you recommend using only 1 light per shelf or 2?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 5 ай бұрын
2 lights would be ideal, that way you get good coverage across their canopy. However, a single light would still work well too. At home we have a small shelf that can hold 2 10x10 trays per shelf, and we use a single light at the moment and it gets the job done for now!

Not a dumb question at all! Most people do about 12inches from the top of the grow tray to the lights. We put ours a lot closer at 9inches. Maximizes the light and we are able to fit more trays on a single rack.

Would've liked a better cost/benefit breakdown. Would be good to know the amount of money an extra 50grams makes you and how long it will take to get your money back on the T8's at these yields, feel like I need to do that work myself now even after watching the video in its entirety. :/
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 2 жыл бұрын
Well, the price is generally fluctuation and what you can get for 50g is entirely up to you. How you package, what you sell, what your market allows... it's like 30 seconds of work if you know your basics on your sales. 50g is nearly 2oz... locally microgreens are sold for $3.99-2oz here... so it's worth an extra $4.00 per tray. 4 trays per rack... that's an extra $18.00 per grow... it's easy math, I've done the hard part, just plug in some simple numbers.
@jmajick4415
@jmajick4415 3 жыл бұрын
It may be double the electrical cost but what % of profit gained or lost is that cost? In your test you have about a 24% increase in total yield (102g) at 50% increased electricity cost but that's only 12 cents/day or 84 cents total for 2 trays. With the extra 24% (102grams) you will more than make up for that extra 84 cents.

Cutting off diffusers on frosted bulbs sounds like a bad idea (even if they didnt expose wires...), because this isn't going to increase par output unless you have a better oriented and more ideally reflective material above them than the included diffusers in order to redirect light to plants below. Diffusers are there to increase par output downward since frosted bulbs are meant to diffuse light in all directions and therefore be easier on the eyes; clear tubes are for directional light, e.g. for growing. Also, food for thought: vertical growth is important for saving space, but why would you continually water/store water above non-waterproof light fixtures? Not a good idea even if on GFCI breakers.
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 3 жыл бұрын
We've had people with PAR meters say that it doubles in PAR when they took it off... I haven't tried it, but I don't see why they would lie :) It makes sense though because it is slightly opaque, thus blocking the light to soften it when compared to the clear. As for watering, if you use care when watering and put in shelf liners like we do, there isn't water getting onto the fixtures... If you do not have shelf-liners on or you are really careless in how you water, then it would be pretty concerning.

Hello Tharina Stoltz ! Our space stays between 75-80F degrees in the Summer (Best Germination Temps) and between 67-73F in Winter and our humidity around 50% or under. We also have one large fan that circulates the majority of the air and small computer fans on each shelf of each rack. All fans are running for 24 hours of the day. We do not pump carbon-dioxide in the space and the space only exchanges air when we open the door a few times throughout the day.🙂 I hope this helps!
