I've always wondered how high I actually get with my climbing sticks, so I pulled out a measuring tape, climbed a tree as high as I could and measured the results. I've been working on climbing higher while hunting in order to avoid getting busted and had great success with it this past hunting season. Here I'm using four Tethrd One Climbing sticks, along with other saddle hunting gear by Tethrd.

Hello, great job on the video. I've been studying mobile climbing systems for a while now and they just don't seem that safe. And carrying climbing sticks everytime I go out hunting, wouldn't be my first choice ether because they can kick out and your foot can slide off the steps quite easily. Ratchet straps would work to hold the stick but their to heavy. Screw in steps were always the safest but they weren't light either and back then a safety harness was never even thought of. Lol

Wow, 18 ft.... YES ...i love yall's videos, and your enthusiam. For over 30 yrs, I've always jacked up in a tree to 30 ft + with a climbing stand, where i hunt, swamps of Louisiana, they spot you from afar.... been busted too many times, so had to climb higher... that saddle hunting ya'll do is a trip.... totally love it yeah!!@@OutdoorsAllie

I used to climb high, but decided there are things worse than dying. Living life maimed from falling out of a tree comes to mind. I have killed deer out of stands as low as 7 feet off the ground. Some set ups actually require you to be closer to the ground because your shooting lanes can disappear if you go too high. I survived two tree stand falls to the ground, both of them involving equipment failure and not clumsiness... one was a climber that cut lose from the tree and I rode it all the way to ground. The second was a ladder stand that decided it wanted to be on the other side of the tree as I just started climbing down and it spun 90 degrees slinging me off 16 feet up. At that height, you actually have time to hear the air rushing past your ears before you hit the ground. These incidents happened over 20 years ago. I always wear a safety harness now. The best mistakes to learn from, are someone else's...

I’m new to hunting but I want to use a saddle and climbing sticks. I’ve gone up regular tree stands and I just don’t like them that much. I don’t need to be that high up. Just a little bit to see further would be good for me.

Wow! You're amazing! i enjoy all your videos. I had a similar thing happen while hunting. I got to my ladder stand in the dark and an hour after first light a buck walked up to my stand on the same trail i walked in on. he started sniffing the ground near my stand and i arrowed him. i climbed down and got ready to blood trail and realized somebody's dog left a surprise on the ground near my stand and it was now on my rungs, the platform on top and on my hands. Fortunately i had to retrieve my buck so I used a bunch of leaves to clean my hands and went and found my deer. HAPPY ENDING!

I've been repelling back down using a rescue 8, during practice, will now be investing in getting a gree gree!!! I ended up scrapping the sticks altogether, & went with the method of “SRT”, (Single Rope Technique), as most trees I target climbing, tend to be huge, & choked with limbs & branches. With the “PITN” (Pain In The Neck) of sticks, I might as well have stuck with the comfort of my almost 30lb noisy & cumbersome climber, which didn’t work with most trees, & why I looked for an alternative in the first place!!! Now, all I carry in, is my ropes/throw ball, ascending & repelling equipment, & platform. (Backpack with platform attached & bow). The learning curve is so well worth it!!!! Go in light, come out heavy!!!

Since you are climbing with sticks, you could rappel down fairly easily and cheaply and make it so much more safer. Climbing down sticks in the dark is the most dangerous part of the hunt I believe.

You could also use a movable aider, just bringing it up with you as you ascend the tree. Get's a little sketchy using an aider (imo) past the first move, but if you really want to get higher that is one easy way to do it. That or use a swaider. honestly though, 18 feet is about perfect in 90% of hunts imo if you pick the right tree/setup.

I use a “Tree Suit” they are not made anymore, and use bolts and a hand drill to get up private property trees. Once the tree is drilled out a pocket full of bolts gets me up15-20 ft. And I can leave the top ones in for the next time I hunt so I carry little into the woods. 3 bolts for my foot rest is all I need.

I'm curious about a few things: In the hunting area, the game tends to move almost exclusively late at night and is extremely cautious. Incredibly cautious. It often approaches the feeder by just running through it at first. Then it lies down nearby and waits, sometimes for 4-5 hours, and if everything remains still in perfect silence, it ventures out to the feeder for about 15 minutes. In such a situation, when I'm up on the tree at 8-12 meters high for 14-16 hours, there are times when "nature calls" and "I need to take a moment for personal hygiene." Does this work in saddle hunting? :-)

Hey Allie Why not get rid of the Ropeman 1 and use a Mad Rock Safegaurd? They are a $ 100 bucks on Amazon ! That way you can repel down and remove steps as you go. Much faster! You can use it going up or down and will be much safer using a 30 ft tether! Keep your all your extra tether rope in a pouch on your right side so the deer don't smell it until you are ready to repel down . Whatcha think yes-no?🤔

One thing I was disappointed with that you didn't take your bow with you and did a couple practice shots to show the difference when higher up in a tree.

Don't, you're smart. Please research hunting aloft, injuries & deaths from heights. Climbing utility poles for a living involved 90 foot poles several times over my career. One slip would equal a mushie bag of bones. No way if I didn't have to with my work. NO WAY
