Coming in a little late to this party. Two commentaries I highly recommend , for a pastor or anyone else, are #1 Leviticus by Andrew Bonar. He turned what most of us would consider our least favorite book of the Bible into a 5th gospel. And it's one of those rare books that you want to read over again (I'm about to read it for the 4th time). #2 is Galatians-Colossians by John Calvin. I jot down quotes from the books I read. This commentary is filled with quotables. I've read others of this set, but this particular one is exceptional. My "guilty pleasure" commentary set is the Be Series, by Warren Wiersbe.

I know what you mean about the NICNT... It's a lot for someone to take in but it's so darn good once you do 😁... And yes I knew every book as soon as you put it on camera 🤣🤣🥰

I use several commentaries: --IVP Bible Background Commentary. This is only two volumes, but my favorite “go to” for a brief commentary by scholars I trust. --By far the most difficult to read but most beneficial is the Word Biblical Commentary. My Biblical Greek instructor recommended it. I have purchased all volumes available but had to acquire them separately. Most of my collection came from used book stores. --The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture allows me to read how church fathers interpreted Scripture. It is a thirty-volume set. It never disappoints. --NT Wright’s New Testament For Everyone is a recent purchase and an interesting addition. --One of the most valuable resources I own for Bible study is not a commentary but the Holman Bible Dictionary. In Hermeneutics class we were taught to begin our study without using a commentary and this dictionary was (and remains) useful.

Your #1 was often set as a text book for my degree at Liberty. Good stuff Dean. I also like Calvin’s. Nice to see what someone said in the 16th century.

Bones! Calvin is the bomb, just not as accessible which is why I left it off.

Excellent material. The North American Set which is being made into the CSB Commentary set is really good as well. The Jeremiah Comentary has been super helpful. It has an academic and practical side. Only pushing into super complex issues when needed for clarity or of there is a translation difficulty.

Is that the one Patrick Schreiner is doing his Acts one for?
@robertdeuel43322 жыл бұрын
@@Underdogtheology yes. Much of the NAC is being moved into the CSC set. Yet some of the commentary writers either would not update their content or have went to be with the Lord. I think it will be an excellent set striking a great balance between academic and practical.

Any recommendations on commentaries that do a good job of fleshing out different views for interpretation (more of a theological commentary based on exegesis)? I have benefited from the “perspectives” or “4 views on the X issue” series but these just address specific issues not in a commentary form
@Underdogtheology2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, im not aware of any commentaries like that, but any from DA Carson seem to present others' opinions on a text fairly while giving his own.

Great topic! My favorite commentary set is probably Pillar. (Working on putting that set together) I did opt to go author by author for my N.T. set. My favorite commentators are Beal, Carson, Moo, Keener. On a side note, you were talking about how that one volume of a commentary was a monster have you seen Keener's Acts commentary it is 4 volumes, and over 4000 pages lol talk about a monster. Blessings

Yeah I almost puchased it when I was preaching through Acts, but just couldn't justify the price in my head. I hear it's amazing though!

I am one of those that likes the NICNT. I also like the Pillar Commentary but it's expensive. I like this one which you didn't mention, The New American Commentary. I have never used or given a second thought to using the NIV Application Commentary Set. Maybe I should buy one and see how I like it. I would like to see you do a video on best digital commentary sets to get and use. Especially many of us pastors/teachers use Logos and Olive Tree. I use Logos and have a couple partial sets through my Logos software package. I also have some partial sets through my Kindle app that I use on my iPad. And then I have many hardback commentaries. So, I am all over the place. Thanks and God bless.
