Thank you! I'd suggest working in family practice and try to get experience doing laceration repairs and I&D of abscesses. After a year or two start applying to as many urgent cares as you can. More rural clinic are often easier to get it without UC experience.

In the urgent care where I worked, we always had a lot more than 25 a day. Two of us would see often 50 plus --- it was tough but I did enjoy the work. Constantly overworked though.

NPs and PAs do the same job in both the urgent care and emergency departments. In some states NPs have full practice authority and can practice independently in their specialty. PAs on the other hand cannot.

@ahmed_np
@ahmed_np 3 жыл бұрын
10-15 mins without procedures. Procedures like suturing or abscesses can take up to an hour. Now this is just time with me as the provider. Patient also sees the medical assistant for vitals and others tasks and radiology tech if they need X-rays

Is the digital block something you learn in NP school or on the job? Do you learn how to read X-RAYS and do suturing in FNP school? Thanks
@ahmed_np
@ahmed_np 3 жыл бұрын
I learned the digital block during my clinical rotations. You get basic x-ray education in school, but most of the learning comes with clinical and experience + continued education. Suturing you learn in FNP school, then you get better the more you do it.

Hello, I was lucky enough to get a PRN ER NP job a few months after graduation. I built my connections from working as a ER nurse and was persistent on asking about ER openings. After that I got accepted to my current full-time role that is split between ER and urgent care. I'd say either do a fellowship or at least get 1 year of family practice experience and reapply. Keep trying! I also had to move to a more rural place.

@ahmed_np

You need to be either a family nurse practitioner or physician assistant. No other certifications are required. There is usually on the job training. Prior emergency or family practice experience is beneficial. There are also online and in person CME courses that are geared towards urgent care that can be helpful.
