It is an interesting and easy day trip. Katoomba has plenty of places to eat, of just have a cup of coffee. Then there are the views from Echo Point and the surrounding lookouts. A quick tip. All the trains will be double deck, like the one shown. The best place to sit in each direction is the left hand side, and upstairs in the carriage. As you head to Katoomba, the train line largely follows a ridge, giving great views forward and south over more distant ridges and at times into valleys; you will also see some small towns. On the return, you look across to the central ridge, ending in Mt Hay. Make sure you adjust the seat back so that you're looking forward in each direction.
