What better way to start the day than waking up in the gorgeous Katoomba, Blue Mountains here in New South Wales, Australia 🇦🇺 The final stop on our road trip is here and we couldn’t think of a better place to finish it off! This area is gorgeous and this whole trip has been one out of the story books. Partially because it’s been filled with one too many comical mishaps, but even more so because each sticky situation has come with more than a handful of the most laid back, friendly, and helpful Aussies to help us out! 😍 Safe to say we will have to return again and a road trip is definitely on the cards! ❤️

I'm a Melbournian, and the best advice I can give you is take a day or two to see the city sites, State Library, street art, Queen Victoria Market, The Block Arcade and St Kilda beach. If you have time, visit The Great Ocean Road, I'd recommend about 3 days. If you don't have that much time you could always take a one hour trip from the city to the Dandenong Ranges. There's plenty of walks there, and old steam train called The Puffy Billy, tons of parrots, and small villages full of cafes, bakeries, and antique shops. Enjoy Melbourne.

There are a few stories surrounding the 3 Sisters. One of them was, The Aboriginal dream-time legend has it that three sisters, 'Meehni', 'Wimlah' and 'Gunnedoo' lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the Katoomba tribe. These beautiful young ladies had fallen in love with three brothers from the Nepean tribe, yet tribal law forbade them to marry. The brothers were not happy to accept this law and so decided to use force to capture the three sisters causing a major tribal battle. As the lives of the three sisters were seriously in danger, a witchdoctor from the Katoomba tribe took it upon himself to turn the three sisters into stone to protect them from any harm. While he had intended to reverse the spell when the battle was over, the witchdoctor himself was killed. As only he could reverse the spell to return the ladies to their former beauty, the sisters remain in their magnificent rock formation as a reminder of this battle for generations to come.

Ok, so Melbourne will be a very different experience to Sydney…it’s important to understand that Melbourne’s treasures are not as obvious and visible as Sydney’s. Whereas Sydney is big, bold and beautiful with its iconic landmarks and beautiful beaches and harbour, Melbourne is all about subtle treasures. Cool neighbourhoods with amazing cafes and restaurants, European sidewalk dining and hidden, mysterious lanes of shopping and culinary delights. You must by pastries in St Kilda, Vietnamese food in Richmond, Italian in Carlton and so on. Museums and galleries, culture and architecture. The greatest examples of the golden era of Victorian buildings such as the Exhibition Buildings or Flinders Street Station. Of course there is natural beauty in the central highlands, the Grampian ranges, the Great Ocean Road but Melbourne is the introverted, smouldering beauty to Sydney’s wild out there party girl

@@windyhillbomber Sydney has the subtle, hidden treasures too. We also have many ethnic enclaves and food experiences around the city and particularly in the suburbs: Fairfield (Assyrian & Syrian), Granville (Lebanese), Harris Park (Indian), Newtown (Turkish), Artarmon (Japanese), Cabramatta (Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian), Auburn & Lakemba (Middle Eastern, & Bangladeshi, Burmese), Haymarket (Chinese & Thai), Marrickville (Greek), Burwood (Chinese), Lidcombe (Korean), Campsie (Malaysian), Kingsford/Kensington (Indonesian), Ryde (Persian/Iranian), Five Dock / Haberfield (Italian), Strathfield (Korean), Blacktown (mixture, including Indian, Chinese, Thai, Filipino, Ethiopian), etc. Melbourne is not the only multicultural city in Australia.

Nice try….I’ll let the hosts decide which city has the better food scene. Love Sydney but it will never trump Melbourne on multiculturalism and inner city urban cool. You have your harbour, Melbourne has its cool. I guess that’s why is is constantly rated the best city to live in and Australia’s only city listed as one of the ten most culturally important in the world. 😀

It was a shame that you couldn't do the Anvil Rock lookout. Absolutely stunning in the arvo sun. I hope Melb. doesn't disappoint as the weather and area can be very different to what Sydney offers. If you can, try to do a road trip up into the high mountains through Beechwood and Mount Hotham (hot Ham) - Stunning countryside! Wonderful little townships with some of the best bakeries!

I have a photo of me and my brother in the exact same place as you were looking at the 3 Sisters at 13:33. It was the 1960's and the last time I was in that area as I am from another state (South Australia). I have been to Sydney several times, just not back there. I was about 7 or 8 at the time. Nearly 64 now. It is very majestic and it hasn't changed a bit, I can tell you that. I have loved watching your adventures in Australia and hope you have a happy and safe journey to your next destination. I travelled the world too, in 1988, alone and took a few tours along the way. I decided never to go overseas again. I was totally tired of it all, despite the wonders that I saw. Living out of suitcases and being on tours takes a lot out of you. I wish I had done it the way you did it.

@@2Passports1Dream Yes relish the places you visit but slowly is the key. Trying to fit too much into a visit is not only expensive but turns you off travelling. I found I was much more of a homebody after the trip and even though I did a few interstate visits here and there, for the most part I wasn't really interested in travel. Now I have a dog and 3 cats at home that need me so any thoughts of travel are out the window anyway. You enjoy yourself in Melbourne. I am in Adelaide, one capital city away from where you are going. I have been to Melbourne quite a few times as it is cheap and easy to get to for me. You will love the northern markets they have there.

I can’t believe how they have ruined the aural beauty of area with those pathetic dinosaurs soundtracks. How sad, they have decided to cater to the lowest common denominator and the attention spanned challenged by introducing dinosaurs themes. No longer can you hear the local native birds that used to echo the valley and played their part in the essence of the Aussie bush. Very sad! You should have had Devonshire Tea… The local Tea & Scones were always a highlight of the area

As a Katoomba local, it is always disappointing - in a way - that visitors focus on the private, family-owned theme park that is Scenic World, and Echo Point, for their Blue Mountains experience. Everywhere else around it for miles and miles is FREE to enter. For example, if you had crossed the road from where you were camping, you could have started a 15-minute hike down to the base of Katoomba Falls, which you got a glimpse of from way up in the Skyway and/or walked for 2 minutes to get to Katoomba Cascades. Then there's the northern escarpment, which it seems you missed, and the spectacular Govett's Leap, Cliff-top walk, and the Grand Canyon hike down into the rainforest. Next time, OK!?

It’s a real pity you didn’t have time to do a couple of the free bushwalks that abound in the Blue Mountains. There are some that take you to spectacular waterfalls, along cliff side tracks and deep into rainforest pockets that contrast with the predominant gum trees. On a couple of walks in the mountains I’ve come came across a lyrebird (a native bird that is rarely seen). I have to say it’s sad to see how commercialised the area around the Scenic Railway has become - dinosaurs look ridiculous in that setting, and don’t get me started on the fake noises they make. Must drive the wildlife crazy! One beautiful thing about the Australian bush is the sound of native birds wafting or squawking as you walk. Still, I’m glad people are enjoying our landscapes and, hopefully, encouraging others to trek down under to a country that is like no other. 🇦🇺😎

The old photo of the scenic railway is how I remember it when I was a child we would do that fairly regularly and the walk back up the stairs or riding it backwards is a very strange feeling. Was the last Sydney campsite in Lane Cove?

When they say the 3 Sisters are 15 million yearsold, thats young for Australia. Some landscapes, many in Western Australia are up to 3.5 billion. Australia is the oldest continent on earth.

Did you try a Golden Gaytime(ice cream) while you were in Australia? I last traveled the scenic railway in 1982/83 as a child. Back then the train wasn't enclosed but had like a wire mesh over head and nothing to hold you in but the G's and your hands holding on for dear life as it plummeted down, only suddenly jolt with brakes on after the end of the tracks were seen. Screams were often heard and one time, a woman left terrified by the trip down, begged for another way up, which at time, was the only return trip up. That raised walking platform wasn't there. You had to watch your step along the simple dirt track. And all those dinosaurs etc weren't there then. I don't personally understand why they put them there when the area is rich with history, both white settler and first nation's.

The scenic railway (the steep one) has been there for many years. It used to have no enclosing roof, but it seems modern safety standards mean it is all enclosed now, but still looks fun nonetheless. I grew up in Sydney, and have fond memories of Sunday day trips to the Blue Mountains, and morning tea in the Hydro-Majestic Hotel. So glad you enjoyed your trip.
