One of my good friends, and the guy who introduced me to Commander (thanks my dude!) told me that lands are probably one of the biggest traps when budgeting for commander decks. I know everyone wants the best mana base possible, and it is undisputed that having a diversified mana base is really helpful when playing 3+ color decks, but you have to consider the impact that diversified mana production is going to have versus just waiting an extra turn for an ETB tapped land that costs 10 cents. He told me he would rather allocate 40 dollars to big impact cards rather than spend 100+ dollars just so he can have shocks and fetches. Bonus points if you can run a mono color deck with cheap but synergistic cards like Sram, where most of your lands are plains that cost pennies.
@dannyboy39975 жыл бұрын
This is very good advice. The key to running a good budget deck is to prioritize as much of that budget as possible to cards that are both powerful and synergistic with the core strategy of the deck. The trade-off for this is a somewhat 'inconsistent' mana base and perhaps a slower ramp/curve than other players at a higher budget. This is where the beauty of running one or two color decks really shines. You can easily make a powerful, competitive deck in one or two colors without straining the budget on an expensive mana base. Lands are a great investment to make before you start investing in other high-tier, expensive cards, however. Lands and colorless rocks are very flexible pieces that can slot into most decks. These are what players who want to expand their budget should choose to invest in first. But, it is important to recognize when the time to invest in them is correct. A player should consider the relative power increase between a faster land package v.s. another $20-30 card slotted in their deck. In my opinion, the correct time to make an investment in lands/rocks is dependent on the relative power of your deck v.s. your own meta. When you hit the level of power that most players in your meta are at, instead of continuing the pursuit of more power, it is better to focus on increasing the consistency of your deck with more efficient lands and a faster ramp package. This will help you 'future-proof' yourself as your meta increases in power over time, and it will give you access to a more consistent mana base if you ever decide to invest in a deck with more than one or two colors. In a deck with three or more colors, the mana base can become more important than anything else. After all, if you aren't getting the correct colors of mana on the turns it is needed, how will you stay involved in the game?
@patrickmchugh46165 жыл бұрын
@@dannyboy3997 That's a very good point about land investment. Expensive but superior lands like the shocks, fetches, or even the original duals are never going to be a mistake when it comes to building decks in the long run. There are even some budget work-arounds like the Odyssey filter lands, which are not perfect but definitely worth it over just running a basic. Also for budget players are the existence of green mana fixing in its ramp selections, as well as signets and other mana rocks like Fellwar Stone (not super budget but hey) that can assist in fixing issues without dumping hundreds of dollars into the absolute best lands. My first commander deck was Wort, Boggart Auntie. A pretty basic Rakdos land base which I have slowly added to as I have opened cards like Bloodstained Mire in packs. Will I ever buy a badlands to round out the mana base? Probably not, but the deck doesn't suffer much for its absence.

My Muldrotha started as a Commanders Quarters deck. My Feather is still pretty much stock from his list with a few of the upgrades. Krikk, which I only built recently, started as a replica of his deck, then I realized how many mono black staples I had laying around. All three are amazingly powerful right now. My fiancee has a Gishath deck that is pretty close to, if not identical to Mitch's list, his Tatyova started as one, but it got a lot of love and upgrades over its lifespan. That Tatyova deck is absolutely terrifying now, but it was still really good right when it started. Mitch's decks are great, I love his content, and I'm so glad you guys did this collab. All the Commander's Quarters decks make for a really good starting point, and they're all really well balanced against eachother. Oh, and good budget cards I don't see very often: Jarad's Orders is a great tutor, and if a deck CAN run Villainous Wealth, it SHOULD probably run Villainous Wealth. It's a bit hard to cast, costing Sultai and X, but I've personally seen it end more games than Expropriate. Partially because of how expensive Expropriate is. You could even hypothetically cast Expropriate off of it, without spending a single cent on the card! So good!

I found a 50 $ Uril, The Miststalker deck yesterday on tapped out that was fully competitive, it was very impressive for just 50 $. obviously, the mana base was really slow, the dual lands come into play tapped and such, but the rest of the deck was crazy good. Not sure if the guy got his deck from you or he made it hiself, but it was very impressive. Uril is one of those perfect Voltron commanders to build on a budget, along with Feather and maybe Zurgo too. so list of budget enchantments: Enchantment (37) 1x AEther Web 1x All That Glitters 1x Ancestral Mask 1x Armadillo Cloak 1x Asha's Favor 1x Banishing Light 1x Battle Mastery 1x Blessing of the Nephilim 1x Cartouche of Strength 1x Colossal Majesty 1x Eternal Warrior 1x Ethereal Armor 1x Faith Unbroken 1x Fertile Ground 1x Flickerform 1x Hammerhand 1x Holy Mantle 1x Indestructibility 1x Instill Energy 1x Inviolability 1x Messenger's Speed 1x Oblivion Ring 1x Pariah 1x Runes of the Deus 1x Sage's Reverie 1x Scourge of the Nobilis 1x Shield of the Oversoul 1x Shielded by Faith 1x Shiv's Embrace 1x Squee's Embrace 1x Tilonalli's Crown 1x Trace of Abundance 1x Triclopean Sight 1x Unflinching Courage 1x Unquestioned Authority 1x Vow of Wildness 1x Weirding Wood of these 37 Enchantments only 2 are over 1 $ and they are 1,49 $. They are "shield of the oversoul" and "Ancestral Mask" so these Enchantments are dirt cheap and really good. all these 37 are used in the Uril 50 $ budget deck. the guy that made the deck said it was possible to start killing people on turn 4 with it, so its really effective. Actually, what you are talking about at the end of the video isn't as much as an advantage as it is a hinderence for me. You see. In my country, anything I order from the US (or any other country for that matter), can only cost 300 Danish Kroner. currently, that amount comes to 44,67 $ currently. So no package must be more than 44,67 $ in value for items in the package + shipping. This is where Card kingdom hurts me you see, if I order all my cards from them, the package will have HUGE value and I will have to pay tax for it. anything over 44,67 gets taxed by 30% so I pay 30% extra. This is where TCGplayer saves me, there are different sellers there, meaning I can buy for 44,67 from one seller, 44,67 from another and so on until I have all the cards, I might pay 20 $ in shipping, but I pay no tax. plus, Card Kingdom charges 20 $ shipping to ship packages to Europe so I save nothing.

Been only playing a weeks and working on a mono blue emry artifact commander build so this was a good listen. So far im under $75 for the whole deck and have bought the timeless wisdom precon that came with fierce guardianship and some other good cards. The cycling is cool but its more of a “kitchen magic commander deck” vs mono blue where it has lots of answers and can ramp up quick.
@kristopherwatts94665 жыл бұрын
The mana dork myr!!! They're amazing for ramp for folks who can't get ahold of other rocks. Spring leaf drum, ally encampment and survivors encampment are also stellar if your in a go wide style, since your weak tokens turn into mana dorks

I want to see Mitch on Game Knights with all budget decks
@moonlight28705 жыл бұрын
My tips for a budget deck: 1: always play green. If you don't have money for an expensive mana base, you have money for cultivates and rampant growts, a d sakura tribe elders etc, and that's gonna help your fixing A LOT; 2: it's not as important, but blue it's gonna help you too in the same matter, with card draw; 3: try to keep to 2 colors. Less colors = less mana fixing, however mono color is sometimes more expensive, because you have less options; 4: try to keep to allied colors. There's a bunch of good lands in allied colors that are not very expensive, like slow fetches, the battle flr zendikar duals, the amonkhet duals, the shadows over innistrad lands (like game trail) etc. It's easier to build a better mana base like that; 5: try to have a broader deck concept, nothing too specific. If you have a general creature deck (like ruric tar or xenagos), you don't need any specific cards, you just need good creatures, and those exist at any price range.

You forgot 1 important card. Bauble
@darksteelmenace5955 жыл бұрын
So what you are saying is: play Simic :D But you are right mono colored decks are actually bad for building budget (except for mono green), because to make them work you have to buy the expensive ramp like extraplanar lens etc. Especially mono black is really pricey with all those doublers and Cabal coffers. And you really need that to keep up.
@moonlight28705 жыл бұрын
@@darksteelmenace595 you don't NEED to play simic, but simic is a good building block for budget. However, simic is not an ally pairing, which makes one of the itens irrevant ahahaha.
@darksteelmenace5955 жыл бұрын
@@moonlight2870 Its not important if you're playing allied or enemy colors, the expensive landcycles are not really cheaper in allied, so you should avoid fetches and shocks either way, they are overrated anyway.

Mitch was awesome and I'm really glad you guys had him on. While I'm not a total budget player, I build way too many decks to build them expensively, so it's awesome you guys embraced that and brought him on. I love the commandzone, it's easily my favorite magic KZbin channel. Having said that, I think my favorite individual episodes are when you bring someone else on. It's certainly not meant to be an offense, but it's just awesome when a new point of view is brought in the show. Again, certainly no offense to jimmy cause he's awesome, but when DJ was on for a few months there was just a different and unique vibe. And to turn that around, jimmy and Profs episode was great for the same reason. The content creation episode with your artist friend, also totally awesome. And all the commander summits, especially this last one, were amazing. I'm really hoping that this is something you can guys are able to do a bit more. Maybe I'm forgetting more and you do it more often then I think, but the guest episodes always stick with me as being my favorites.

Bruna, Light of Alabaster is my favorite voltron commander, and very budget friendly too! cheat out enchantments from graveyard and hand anytime she blocks or attacks is sooo good! Not to mention can steal others auras too!

The BEST budget is zero. Everyone in my local meta has no problem seeing the occasional printed proxy card, and since there's no actual tournaments for Commander, there is literally no reason to spend a hundred bucks on Snapcaster Mage or Mana Crypt.

My favorite budget card is Dark Tutelage. Replaces Dark Confidant, a 60 dollar price tag versus a 35 cent card and they literally do the exact same thing. I don't mind sharing this info, already bought my 10 copies :) cheers.

regarding combos zephyr scribe, 3 mana- 10c retraction helix, 1 mana- 10c sol ring, 1 mana- $4 have zephyr scribe out, cast retraction helix targeting zephyr scribe (trigger scribe, untap it), cast sol ring, tap sol ring for 2 mana (trigger untap scribe), tap scribe to bounce sol ring back to your hand, recast sol ring, trigger scribe, untap it, tap ring for mana & rinse & repeat as much as u want. Is cheaper mana cost than the tidespout tyrrant lines. 5 mana for infinite mana for less than $5 is a bargain. the retraction helix has redundancy with banishing knack, the zephyr scribe has redundancy with nettle drone, mirran spy & jeskai ascendency & sol ring can be replaced by mox amber if your commander is out or mana crypt or mana vault (less budget route). has held up & won in cedh pods.

I have a well running B/R/W deck that uses Alesha, Who Smiles At Death for the commander. Lots of cheap creatures that are all warrior, berserker and barbarian creatures and it also has Lovisa, Cold Eyes in it that beefs up those creatures. Some great targeted removal and signets for extra mana round out the deck.

I'm Aristocrats at heart. It was the first Commander deck I built and the most I've used. Sure, I've branched into other archetypes but my Aristocrats deck is my baby. And I built it so I can customize it how I want. One way I do that is through Commanders. Since I am in Mono-black I do have a limited choice but these are my favorites. Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder can churn out a lot of tokens that can all be sacrificed, especially if you run cards that can reanimate themselves like Gravecrawler and Reassembling Skeleton. (Someone was arguing with me that Crawler is only good in Zombie Tribal, but honestly, how can you say no to basically an infinite sacrifice?) Massacre Girl can be an even better, budget-friendly version of Damnation that can get around annoying things like protection and indestructible, especially if you have a "Gruesome Menagerie" setup going. (Having toughness 1, 2, 3, etc) God-Eternal Bontu can give you absolutely amazing card advantage in Commander, considering you can sacrifice any number of *permanents*. Even Lands, if you're in a desperate situation. And the newest ones, Ayara and Syr Konrad are even more Cutthroat-esque effects.

I told Player 2 that player 3 can play from their GY better and easier than i can and player 3 chose player 2’s GY while i was able to play knights Charge next turn to bring all my knights back!

One budget card I really like is Nephalia Academy. It’s an uncommon land from Eldritch Moon. It taps for colorless and reads “If an ability an opponent controls would cause you to discard a card, you may instead reveal that card and put it on top of your library.” While it isn’t useful in most games, it’s a very underrated tech against discard and it still functions as a land. I really like it but I know that it isn’t great since discard isn’t a common theme as far as I have seen.
